"""Back in the mid 50s when i started shaving the time norm in our home for a shave was 7 mins., and it still does 'nt take me much longer now, i use a lot of the modern soaps etc. And have a good collection of modern and vintage razors , but lathering to that extent is tiotaly over the top, the only we lather is to keep moisture on the face. """ ( Best regards anywY )

It might seem like that but there is a reason. You keep brushing, working it in and slowly adding water over and over. You want to get the later super slick with thick foam. That will provide the most hydration on your face giving you the best passes. Sure you can just start shaving once you have a layer of cream on your face but when you work it in with more water your brining out the highest potential in the lather plus is enjoyable to work it in and paint your face over and over.

The Latha line is one of the best values in wet shaving. Outstanding performance for a great price. The shaver looked great as well. My favorite safety razor is a GEM 1912 SE, and I have a few other vintage. Good call on the Barbicide. It's always better to be safe.

good to see your take on this razor oddly enough, i broke mine out of storage a week ago and been enjoying it with great results finally i credit most of the improvement to the Perma-Sharp Supers you turned me on to :) they seem to work best in my aggressive razors with the Maggards MR5 handle the short comb always treated me better but these blades seem to have tamed my long comb beast to my eyes, the long comb is one of my best looking razor heads wish the blade tabs were less exposed though nose, earlobes, lips, a careless motion anywhere will do damage going to have to try my milder short comb again soon with the perma sharps same very exposed tabs though

today i shaved for im first time with a DE razor...its amazing. I used a super cheap razor i got from ebay for a dollar and it came with a blade to. i picked up a can of barborsal atvthe store for another dollar. the whole internet is full of people saying you can get a good shave with cheap products. i cant afford anything more than what i have right now but it works even did a 3 pass shave to without a single cut of any sort

I bought a merkur 38C (expensive lol ! )..after seeing all the reviews and that. it is great for shaving, but i bought it to edge my beard lines on the cheeks and neck....i shaved with my normal gillette shaving cream, and i don,t know why but it either slips/slides uncontrollably or it feels sticky... should i use a shaving soap for safety razor is it different technique to a normal gillette fusion proglide razor.

Hey Nick Shave, I am somewhat of a starter with safety razors but i have a hard time getting a close shave with the mustache area. and I do 4 passes yet im still not as close as i need. I believe its the blades i am using. the darcos stp 300 with the micro touch razor
@TheAndreastt1
@TheAndreastt1 8 лет назад
You should probably get some different blades. I recommend Perma-Sharp Super or Gillette Silver Blue. I have tried about 10 different DE razor blades and those two are probably my favorite so far and they are quite sharp. Dorco ST 300's have a very bad rep among wet shavers. Additionally, the Micro Touch One is a mild razor which makes it harder to get a close shave with.

Hey Nick, I'm a new subscriber and pretty new to wet shaving (only about a month in) and I wondered if you ever considered doing advice videos on specific questions viewers put in? I'm having a persistent problem with an area on my neck just on the right-hand side which I always get irritation and burn on and I can't seem to get a close shave there either. Any tips on problem areas, especially around the neck? Thanks so much for all your videos, they're a huge help and great fun too! Joe

The NEW LC gets even better with one of those fat Maggard handles. I got the super heavy one for my cousin, and he said it was almost too aggressive for him but he adapted to it. You could probably try any handle you have laying around, because the NEW handle is incredibly light and hollow (which I believe is partially due to the Great Depression).

And Nick, I figured out how to lather Williams Mug Soap. I agree it's a very difficult soap to lather, but there's a trick to it: instead of soaking the brush and soap separately, you have to pre-soak both the soap and the brush in the same mug! Also, you need to add glycerin to the lather, and it should work! Hope this helps!

I only wish I could shave. I have tried EVERY razor, cream and Gizmo and Everytime no matter what or how my neck breaks out and feels like it's on fire and around my mouth too. And it goes on for days. To the point I started using electric whal mini clippers and leaving a close stubble...no burning or break outs since. Im envious of you because I used to love the routine of personal grooming.
@jazzman1626
@jazzman1626 6 лет назад
J. Kirby It could be that you’re simply pressing too hard on your skin with the razor. Just let the weight of the razor do the cutting. Use plenty lather and take your time applying it. I find scratching it right after that helps to work the lather in better. Go slowly and always start by following the direction of growth. Different parts of the face grow in different directions. Stroke your face when you have growth and the smoothest direction is the cutting direction. Second pass, if you want to, is across the grain. Try to avoid cutting against the grain if you have sensitive skin.

I use the same safety razor very often, and Personna was the best match for mine too. Every time I try a new one, I just slowly end up coming back to this one. I have a question, do you ever hand strop your safety razor blades? I found just a few swipes on either side for both sides really seems to cut out snagging of beard hairs. I learned it from someone else on youtube. It makes feather blades super smooth. Also, is it really safe to use alum anymore? Can the aluminum get in your blood? Ever since I heard that Alzheimer patients tended to have more aluminum ions in their brains and that it may help lead to the disease, I have avoided aluminum based baking powder and aluminum based anti-antiperspirants, I do use deodorants though, just none with aluminum in them. I'm gonna stop drinking coke from cans, I just got used to doing it again, but I'm asking this of you as a Doctor, can alum and alum based products get into the blood stream from shaving products? If so, is it dangerous? I know it seems like a stupid question, look how many people used these products their whole lives and they seemed okay, but maybe not as many did use them. I know smokers who light up and almost just use their cigarettes as incense sticks instead of breathing them in. That could be how some smokers never get complications from smoking. Anyway, thanks for a cool video, I plan to check out the brush and soap on amazon. May you be blessed, man, and have a great day.

I've tried Cremo, and like it for superlathering. There are some great creams out there. Speick is one of my personal favorites, and many people enjoy Proraso. If you venture outside tube creams, there are a lot that come in a tub that are great performers, though some are on the pricey side. Have you ever considered using soap? The Latha line really is exceptional, and easy to get great lather off of.

+Eric Sorrentino I actually have been using Cella (technically a croap haha)for the past 10-11 shaves and absolutely love it. I'm still sloppy at building lather in a bowl, but have face lathering down really well. I wanted to try a cream because it looks like it'll be easy to bowl lather and want to get it down before I venture to straight razors. I'll check out some of your recommendations!!!

You're supposed to use a tiny amount of barbacide and dilute it. It's something like 2oz barbacide to 16oz water if I remember correctly and replace the water after a days worth of use for barbers. Using straight barbacide is super overkill!

I have been shaving with a safety razor for 38 years, and there is nothing safe about them just a learning curve.

Hey, Doc, with the way that your nose got bitten, it appears that an open comb razor may require a bit more caution.

I have the short comb version of this razor, which I use exclusively. I did not use the barbicide, but knew the previous owner--my mother! She used it to shave her legs. It has been in the family since 1925. You can find the date of manufacture from the serial number stamped on the flat platen which the blade contacts. Serial numbers are available on Badger & Blade (badgerandblade.com)

Have you ever considered doing a ASMR type of shaving video? I know it isnt the focus of your chanel but I feel it would do well.

i put my vintage razors in boiling water when i get them and let the rolling boil agitate the razor which helps to loosen anything unwanted then clean with a toothbrush and soap,

I'm such a germaphobe that I even disinfect brand new razors with 70% isopropyl alcohol for 10 minutes and then Barbicide for 10 minutes. You can never be sure that the razors weren't returned, or know how they were handled at the factory.

i think i heard you say you reuse the barbicide? I was like.. wait did he say that..? if so what hell is the point of trying to be sanitary if you're going to reuse it and put it back in the bottle??!! lol its like no you need to throw that away! Also you can dilute the mixture some with water and it will still be enough to kill hiv/bacteria but please after use throw it out and don't put it back in the bottle. I know that like you said the risk for infection is minimal but for others who may not know that's improper sanitation.

Nick, 2 oz barbicide to 16 oz H2O. Or if your cheap 1 oz to 8 oz H2O.
@mikeyb4642
@mikeyb4642 7 лет назад
Some chemicals reach maximum efficiency when diluted. For example, ethanol, used for killing bacteria, is most effective when at a 70% concentration (30% H2O). This is because pure EtOH coagulates proteins immediately. This prevent the alcohol from progressing very far beyond the cell wall of the bacterium. However, 70% slows down the coagulation of the proteins so the ethanol can penetrate all the way through the cell. So, dilute that stuff and toss it after use. How valuable is your health?

It is the same ratio, but less fluids being used, thats why he said if you're cheap, as in not wanting to waste fluid.

@nickshaves

Thats a good start, but you also need some anti-virucidal properties (to cover HIV, hepatitis, etc...)

Lol typo xD. But in all seriousness, plenty of people shave their nether region with a DE. Just be sure to stretch the skin and go slow. My only concern would be shaving the jewels. But people do that as well. Hair removal cream works wonders on the bald bags.
