Just started using kai blades and they are very sharp. They are smooth as well but I think the biggest advantage by far is the edge retention. This blade can last me all week(2 pass shave) and then some if I wanted.

Awesome video Nick. Ever since I have seen you start blooming your soaps I began to do the same, I love the slickness it provides as a pre-shave. I will always continue to bloom my soaps, so thank you for that advice. I will try the Kai blades next time i make an order.

Glad you are liking the kai blades. They are great, however pricey. I believe they are slightly thicker and slightly wider than the normal DE blade. I have read that they take the "aggression" of a razor up a slight bit, yet are smooth at the same time.

Nick, thanks so much for doing these videos. I just binge watched your last 20 videos. Haha! I just appreciate how straightforward they are, and how you articulate the little details of the process. They have helped bring a lot of clarity to some of the quirks of wet shaving for me. I'm placing a big order to try the things you're recommending. Please keep doing what you're doing! Will be watching every video. Thanks again. - JB

Nice shave man. Can't wait to see you do another straight razor shave. I have now gotten past my learning curve and it now takes me longer to clean up than it does to shave even with a straight razor and I'm now getting into honing my own straight razors.

My friend David at Razor Blades and More is crazy about these Kai Blades. He gave me a 5 pack and I find them really sharp but enjoy my Feathers more. He tells me to shave with the Kai more than one time but at the great price of DE blades I use any blade only one time. Shave on Nick you're reviews are a joy to watch.

Great video as always, After 2 months I am still trying to break in a semogue 620, but the thing is still a pig, Using feather Blades as I have found they are the smoothest on my beard growth. Copied you with Nivea after shave balm, but also switch in Taylor luxury after shave Balm too.

I have both of these products and I have to agree with your comments. The Kai blades I find while slightly more expensive than most are as sharp as a feather blade but are far kinder to the skin and have greater longevity. To me they seem to be slightly thicker than most blades as well. The SOC Cherry in 2 band I have had for a year or so and I love how the handle feels and the knot is almost the perfect knot for me, if it was just slightly softer at the tips it would be the perfect brush for me. Semogue sell a 2013 limited edition olive wood handled Owners Club brush which is slightly more expensive but has softer tips. Had I not been so cheap at the time I would probably have went for it instead. Great brush though, has only lost one or two hairs and I'm pretty rough when I dry my wood handled brushes ; typical Semogue quality. Enjoy

I tried a Kai blade for the first time this evening and I have to say it dealt me a decent BBS shave with little to no irritation (pretty good for me). I did find they had an odd tugging sensation when I started the shave but I have to say these bad boys can cut! By the end of the first shave, most of the unevenness in the edge seemed gone.Very impressive - they do alot of work for minimal effort and I would say that after some time dialing in to these, I would like them even more. The cost is a bust but what the hey...bought 100 from a Polish supplier. I dare say if people love Feathers, they'll be pretty damn impressed with these (except the price of course)

I like the Kai's. I feel as if they are a much thicker blade than other ones out there. As far as I can tell. I got around 4 shaves with mine. There are these lord blades I'm trying now from a sample pack. Not sure which lord ones they are because there are so many dif lord ones in there but they have the same thick metal and they are giving me awesome shaves as well. The packaging is white with thick bold font written lord in blue.

I can't help but think you're over blooming, it's akin to leaving bath soap in the bath, it's soften, take on water and eventually dissolve. In application it'll give up far more soap in when agitated, which is what you saw with all the lather before using the brush. It's accelerating wearage by atleast 10 times. No a problem though if you have loads of soap.

I Love Kai blades, I've been using them for nearly a year but not exclusively. My favorite blades DE blades are Feather, Kai, Rapira Swedish Supper steels, Gillette Platinum, "not the Blue or 7 o'clock" and Treet Platinum. It's hard for me to get more than 3 to 5 shaves from any of these blades with 3+ passes a shave. I use Stirling or Reef Point shave soaps and Barbon or Figaro', (Hungarian) Lea (Spanish)Tube Creams or Trumper or Taylor OBS tub creams. I Like Parker Brushed. Badger and or Boar hair mostly Badger hair.

I have a question for your Kai blade review. Can you put your micrometer on it and see how thick they are? I have seen folks claim they are thicker than other blades and I think they might be right. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the videos nick, great as usual. 2 quick questions 1) do you bloom every soap or just the hard ones? Do you bloom soaps like chiseled face, la shaving soap, catie's ....etc? 2) if you are actually able to get 5+ shave from a blade, do you leave loaded in the razor the whole time or do you take it out. I usually leave mine in the razor the whole time, but I also throw my blades out after 2-3 shaves. Thanks from a relatively new wet shaver

Having a very coarse beard and sensitive skin I finally got relief when I used Kai....Feather was cutting me; Astra Superior Platinum cut me up like Feather but with lots of irritation ;Derby not aggressive enough for coarse beard ; Personna Platinum was good with minor cuts; But Kai was a game changer!

Hi Nick, Just a thought on Kai Blades. Ive heard that they are slightly wider from blade edge to blade edge than other blades and of course if this is the case they will give a more aggressive shave in a Closed Comb Razor. Ive ordered some and also some new blades on the market by Dorco (Prime Platinum). Looking forward to trying them both with my new Soaps. 3P, and Wickham Super Smooth Soap. Regards, Steve in Fife, Scotland.

I love the Kai blades. I use a Parker 99r, and it is one of the few blades that seem to "fit" the razor handle well. They seem more secure with less wobble. Super sharp, I get better shaves with these than Feathers. And they last a very long time.
@BuffaloNickel9
@BuffaloNickel9 Год назад
Do the doors on your 99R stay closed down... mine is fine, my very first razor and one of the only ones I like from Parker but it seems once per shave I'll have to tighten the knob on the bottom as it just so slightly needs the slightest 1/8th turn to make sure it stays locked. Of course this doesn't affect the shave at all and the actual doors don't open in the slightest

Hi Nick. I enjoy your videos a lot. I'm new to wet shaving and still trying to improve my skills. I use a Omega boar hair brush, Edwin Jagger DE89 and Persona Blades. My skin is very sensitive especially my neck. And I have a dark coarse beard. I love trying to get a super smooth shave but I still get ingrown hairs on my neck even when it feels smooth and no cuts or irritation. Question is, how far do you go on your neck when trying to get as smooth as possible with out getting in grown hairs. I go with grain and then cross grain, then clean up passes. But it's hard for me to get smooth with out going against grain just slightly. Thanks

Glad to see another fresh video! You intrigued me greatly with those Kai Blades. I have very thick beard, so I've been thinking of making a bulk purchase of very sharp but smooth blades due to my sensitive skin. I have yet to find a blade that works for me as well as Lab Blues in terms of balance. I will definitely give these a go to see if they tame my beard with fewer passes or strokes. Great video btw.

+Xelerium I also have a thick beard and sensitive skin. I read that slant razors are ideal for me so I purchased an ATT Slant with Kronos handle. But it came with a sample pack of Astras that left my face a bloody mess. I also read that blades on the sharp end of the spectrum work best with slants. I bought a range of around 9 sample blades. The KAI blades blew everything out of the water! I found the Feather to be way too abrasive. I'd rate the PolSilver a distant 2nd. The Bolzano blades are super smooth, maybe even a tad smoother than KAI, but not nearly as sharp.
@Xelerium
@Xelerium 8 лет назад
Huh, how interesting. I'm relatively new to DE Shaving, so I haven't explored many blades. I haven't even tried Feathers yet. I will try a Polsilver in my 37c and see how it goes.

Cool, I think you'll like them. I found them to be a tad sharper and smoother than the Gillette Silver Blue. I'd also encourage you to try a small sample pack of Bolzano blades. I really enjoyed shaving with them because they're so damn smooth and user-friendly. I just wanted something a bit sharper for my beard, razor, and skin type.

The other two things that are rarely discussed are pre-shave and aftershave. I use a Satin Smooth Hydrasonic Professional Cleansing Brush (with the sensitive brush head) and uskincare Awaken Foam Cleanser before showering and then shaving. This preps my skin for a closer and smoother shave. Then I use Seaflora Splash Toner & Aftershave and when while it’s partially dry, apply a couple pumps of uskincare Aloe Hydrant Gel moisturizer. This calms down any irritation and seals in moisture. Always buy quality products for your skin. One other tip - I love my Dirty Bird Shave Scuttle. I heat water to 170º F in my variable temperature electric kettle for the 16 oz. water reservoir. It’s a really nice luxury to have warm lather!

Great video, Nick! Very interested in your thoughts on the Kai blades. They're one of the blades I'm testing, but haven't gotten to yet. Also, you mentioned you let the soap bloom while showering. I do this too, but I noticed (or assumed) you combed your hair and got dressed before shaving. I was curious how long you take between showering and shaving. I've heard Joe from Razorock say he takes 10 to 15 minutes to let his skin cool down. Do you do the same?

Valobra is one of my absolutely favorite soaps. I never bloom mine with that much water or for that long though. I always considered it a stronger smelling soap with great post shave feel. Nick, now that you have been using the Kai blades for a little less than a month, how many shaves are you in fact getting per blade? I figure, if I can get 5 or 6 shaves out of these, that means I am getting almost double the shaves than from a lesser blade, it's worth the extra money.

I feel more comfortable when the shaving supplies are sold directly by Amazon rather than their 3rd party resellers. For some reason, Amazon and their Soap.com subsidiary aren't really into the wet shaving phenomenon, and leave it to their resellers. I find it surprising that you can get a close shave on the neck just by shaving WTG (north to south) on each pass. I have to perform several XTG passes with j-hooking to get a close shave on the neck. I've also mentioned before that it appears you don't believe in pre-shave oils and feel that bloom water is enough.. Enjoyable video and thanks for the Kai recommendation. A nice finishing touch to this shave would be a splash of Clubman Special Reserve!

MrMilky927 MIKE'S! A bit more aromatic and less powdery than many Barbershop scents. Pairs well with Maggard London Barbershop aftershave (which is another soap option, obviously). Barrister & Mann Seville is another stellar barbershop scent.... more complex than the Mike's variety, somewhere along the lines of Fine American Blend aftershave.
@BuffaloNickel9

Nick man... of course you're going to get a ton of lather if you use half the shaving cream puck or jar for each shave by loading it for half an hour😄 and that's after pouring water into it to "bloom" which doesn't change anything except increase the amount of soap you're picking up in the bristles.. its because you're using 800% more soap than the average shaver...and I'm a guy who likes a lot of lather... The good part? hey, at least you're not running a thin, awful lather and everything else is spot-on. you do a very good job shaving. I guess I'm more chuckling at how much Soap you use...

nick shaves I think you're hitting a point in your journey where it might be time to investigate the highest caliber badger brushes. I've been saving up to buy one towards the winter, but the cost is high enough where I really want to get it done right the first time. It might be worth seeking advice from someone like SoSharpDavid or Anthony Esposito regarding the likes of Thater, Saville Row, and Shavemac. As of now I'm targeting a custom Shavemac 2-band, and it will probably be a smaller knot (21-22mm) with a loft I have yet to determine. Still learning about fan/bulb shapes.

Backbone is sort of why I'm leaning towards a customized Shavemac, but I've never experienced a high end brush with that type of density. @beg033
@beg033 2 года назад
Stirling isn't a hard soap at all. It's in the croap category. Just be gentle on your brush (avoid excessive pressure), and you can use your silvertip on any hard soap (including triple milled). A good brush will lather any soap (no matter how hard it is).

When blooming them you got your bathroom become aromatherapy. I never used barbasol and it's probably a great priduct, but you are missing by not trying soaps.

I'll tell you what! I'll try a few soaps! I need a brush though! But I'm in love with barbasol so I'm not going to trade it! But I'll try soaps! I'm sure you are right about them!

nick shaves Been recommending KAI to many people for a while now. Very sharp, smooth and long lasting. Wish the same could be said of Personna and Feather blades.

BeautyofScent i have the phionix DOC and its a good shave but the combs still irritates my skin and i would think every OC does that...

Michael Petersen I have tried every open comb from vintage to modern and they all share the same pointy straight teeth, but the parker 24c/26c have rounded teeth so the razor just glides over the face nicely without being "poky"

You've got Phoenix, Fine, Razorock and Captain's Choice aftershaves but you use Thayer's Cucumber!?!? That's mind boggling.
@nickshaves

I use those too! I use the thayers for its healing qualities, I use the other ones basically as my cologne

nick shaves I hope you're still using them as aftershave. You're the one who showed me how amazing the post shave alcohol burn is so you can't go soft now.

Haha! No way. I use them daily. I pretty much shave at night now, because I go to work early. So I tend to use them first thing in the morning.

Kip Diskin Thayers is also a good option when you get into fragrances more. I've recently picked up Tom Ford Grey Vetiver along with Creed Aventus, both of which are the basis for a couple of Fine aftershaves. The Fine version smells great, but I've gotten into the habit of using Thayers (unscented) as an aftershave, especially if I might be using a unique fragrance that doesn't smell like any of my aftershaves. Even the scented Thayers doesn't interfere with cologne.

Evan R There's no sting in Thayers. I like the alcohol burn after a close shave.

Hahaha, as soon as I read the title of the video I knew already your conlusion on the soap. After your videos using PRORASO, Cella, Tabac, several 3T's etc., another great classic wich performance you rate "so-so". These soaps are on the market for centuries and therefore time-tested by millions. But for Nick S. they are all only average performers, haha, lol. If the soap would have been any US artisan soap your typical wording would have been as usual: "tonnns of slickness" "great cushion", "awesome performer" and "great post shave feel" *rolleyes*. Additinally, your insane soap blooming method, you are here actually using on a extreme soft soap, is the best way to contaminate, waste and finally ruin a good soap.

Guys, its just bothering me to see that "sales representative of formerly HTGAM" how he bashes all the time great time-tested classics while praising each and every US artisan. That seems to be very thwarted to me. Additionally, his reviews are very superficial and in no way anyhow scientiffic. He does not point out that its all his personal opinion, but judges blades, soaps/creams, as, rasors etc. in general after only one try. E.g. he was not able to lather T&H soap, but after his single attempt he judged all T&H soaps to be not worth the money. And then his ridiculous analysis of blade edges with a light microscope and by feeling how fast it goes over his skin - hilarious!!! C'mon guys, do you really believe in such a judgement of a guy who cannot stand an ATG, but tells you how suuuuper close his shaves are?!? Please excaue me, if I offended anybody by questioning your shaving deity! :-D
@danlutter8061
@danlutter8061 9 лет назад
He just reviews products as many others do, and they all have varying opinions. T&H soaps DO SUCK. It is pretty common knowledge, yet they do nothing to fix it and live on their name. The creams are fantastic. Same goes for Trumper. Soaps suck, but the creams are great. TOBS cream and soaps are fine. I don't think he is a deity at all. Just another guy on you tube reviewing products. You call his microscope blade exploration dumb, but it debunked your claim and now you are all butt hurt about it lol. Just admit it and move on man. The funny thing is you are free to NOT watch his channel. YOU are in control of that one, but you choose not to and continue to troll it and take cheap shots because, well, you got called out and he made you look like a fool. Such is life on the internet.
