Facts!!! He started off looking just like Damon then as he pleaded he began to look like shawn, then as he pleaded more i saw Marlon come out and i think i saw a hint of Kim too
I remember seeing this when I was a kid and it was hilarious, cause my pops and two of my sisters had Jehri curls! My whole family was crying laughing! They don't make comedies like this anymore!
Saw a Q&A with Robert Townsend and Keenan Ivory Wayans to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Hollywood Shuffle a few months back MC'd by W. Kamau Bell. So when making this movie one of the producers didn't understand the Jheri Curl bit before the movie got released i.e. they weren't gonna put this scene in the movie. Towsend and Wayans pleaded to the producer to show it one time to a live audience and he agreed to what they said. So in 1987 they played the movie in Oakland and the crowd erupted and people were running up and down aisle's laughing so hard when the jheri curl scene came on and that kept the scene in Hollywood Shuffle.
Hollywood Shuffle is a criminally underrated comedy. Along with Spinal Tap, my two favorite comedies of the 80s. Still quote this awesome movie. Cookie Head Jenkins.......classic.
All these years later and this Shit is still funny. Funnier than Coming to America's scene where the family's jheri curls left the sofa stain. Robert Townsend never got the credit he deserved. He was brilliant for this whole movie.
For those of us old enough to remember the jheri curl know how accurate this scene is. Juice everywhere, I know because I had 5 uncles and an aunt and they ALL had a curl. Fucked many pillow cases up 😂😂😂😂
Yo I remember being at my guys for a cookout. I told him "Aye pass that blunt over to Jheri". My boy spit a mouth full of beer into his ladys face. Unfortunately she JUST so happened to be walking by. That's the stuff u do to catch a mf off guard I use all kinds of old school movies lol
I always wondered why Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans parted ways. I thought they were hilarious together. Those Partner In Crime shows were hysterical. This snippet alone is the proof that their creativity was off the charts. I'm laughing just off of Keenen shaking activator all over the place. Good LORD, his hair was drenched with that stuff. And how his hair dries up toward the end is comedy genius. His scream alone will have you rolling.
iluvmyboba Their two styles of comedy diverged. Wayans went slapstick and sometimes self-deprecating with “In Living Color”, while Townsend wanted to do more socially conscious comedy and satire.
They never parted ways. He co-wrote Five Heartbeats and was supposed to play JT but got In Living Color. They still work on stuff and are doing The Five Heartbeats on Broadway. Robert has cast his brothers in multiple projects. They are best friends
Keenan Ivory Wayans got me laughing REAL hard as the jheri curl starts to shrink before Robert ( as Sam Ace ) gives Jerry Curl (Keenan) back his activator. That part had me by rolling my ass off laughing. Love that scene.
I grew up with this movie and quote it all the time. To me it's the greatest comedy movie ever made and has a GREAT moral to the story. It's about NOT selling out and accepting negative role's that make our people look like fools just for fame and fortune.💯💸;
This was funny back in the day and even funnier this day in age. I don't even think they knew how hilarious this work would be... I also remember john witherspoon doing winky dinky dog scene which had me on the floor....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That activator was going everywhere but man the way the wig was was swing when his head moved left to the right 😂😂😂😂 I couldn't have been there ain't no way I would have kept a straight face 😆😆😆😆😆
Yo, this is a classic man! There hasn’t been anything out there like Hollywood Shuffle, since Hollywood Shuffle! Who says black folk can’t make movies?!?
Nobody says that Black people can't make movies. We can and do. We all need to let 20th century racist internalisations be a thing we leave back there.
Activator was serious back in the day! In 1983 my brother was arrested by mall cops for stealing activator from the Panorama City Mall. He had no money and his curl was drying up. Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.
Saw this movie when it first came out, and laughed as hard as after seeing This is Spinal Tap. But picked up and learned some new terms as a result, among them “activator,” “glycerine,” and “Jheri curl” (yes, I’m an old white guy now). Which helped me tremendously for the next several years, particularly after watching The Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy. I still quote this movie to this day, and am a better person because of it!
@@kingcassius2586 , YES, thank you for the correction. I conflated the two, and appreciate you putting me back on track. I don’t know how I let my Soul Glow point to the wrong movie. Be well.
Very funny scene. I used to also like Winky Dinky Dog as a kid. Robert Townsend was killing the game back then especially with his Partners in Crime HBO yearly specials in the late 80s. This probably played a big deal on getting the Wayans career kicked off in the 90s.
jheri curl " get this punk up outta here". Detective " Back up!" Jheri Curl " Hey thats my activator man." lol his balls dropped immediately when he seen that bottle.LMAO
Who's here in 2019 This movie here is the reason I don't have to try to be funny lmao this shit right here gave me the beginning stages of my funny shit lmao
When I first saw this back in the day, I, being a white kid in junior high in the midwest, had no idea what Jheri Curl was, let alone what activator was, but goddamn if this did not make me laugh my ass off.
