What do you think - are you switching to Krita for photo editing or sticking with GIMP? Let me know below👇

*Krita* it's somewhat heavier than GIMP, requiring minimun 4GB of RAM to run, meaning that if you have less than 4GB of RAM then it will probably not run smoothly, and also counts with the possibility to change the keyboard shortcuts from Photoshop in the case the person uses photoshop for digital painting, and also keyboard shortcuts from Paint Tool Sai as well, in case the person came from Paint Tool Sai.

Hopefully the gimp team will feel the competition from krita and introduce these features. I think both of them could benifit from the competition involved with having some overlap in features.

Good video overall, but there are a few imprecision: In Krita, when you acess a filter through the menu, you can apply it as filter mask instead of a destructive filter, by clicking the "apply as filter mask" button instead of "apply". Also, for color management, Krita has a softproofing option, so instead of working in CMYK, you can work in RGB (which is better of a lot of compositing operations) but krita will convert the final render in CMYK and display it to you as if it was a CMYK image. You can even have a warning color configured for out of gamut areas which makes it super easy to tweak your file for optimal printing. After you are done, you can flatten the image and convert in CMYK before exporting.

I'm a music producer and create my own graphic design cover art. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Krita looks way more easier to use, even despite being regarded primarily as a bitmap editor. GIMP's UI/UX is very obtuse and cluttered. I understand GIMP's difficulties with retaining permanent _and skilled_ developers on board, so development is very slow, but still, it wouldn't be my main choice. Coming from a macOS / Affinity Photo background, I'd choose Krita for now, just for the UI/UX.

i've been waiting for this video for a long time, thank you. for me as a 3d artist krita is much superior, as it allows to change the navigation to what i want, so i put the same navigation as the majority of 3d software have: alt + MMB to pan, alt + RMB to zoom and alt + LMB to rotate. so when im constantly switching between different programs i fell super comfortable. also there is an awesome 'wrap around' mode to make seamless textures, which is much more convenient than changing the offset like in gimp/PS. none of this applies to photo editing of course ;D just sharing opinion.

It seems that the combination of Inkscape, Gimp, and Krita could accomplish a lot. Is it logical to use all three on a graphics printing project, ending with Krita to get it into CMYK? How many of you use all three?
@Cheecken
@Cheecken Год назад
It definitely would make sense. I use the affinity suite personally, but the logic is the same! Any time I need to edit raster images or draw something, I use affinity photo, whenever I need vector designs I use affinity Designer and when I need to do some layouting I make use of affinity publisher. You could definitely use krita gimp Inkscape and scribus together!

The fact that Krita comes with preinstalled GMIC is awesome, 100s of filters right from the box! Gimp should do that too. It shouldn't be a problem, right? Both apps are free, so it's a matter of getting along. Another awesome option in Krita is brush scaling - "SHIFT+LMB+mouse drag left/right"! I can scale brush in a second or two from 1000px to 20px and I can choose the precise size I want by moving mouse very slowly. It's just great! Scaling brush in GIMP is...well...ancient. It's possible to use the mouse wheel and scale brush by 10px at a time but it's so slow. Imagine scaling brush from 1000px to 50px by 10px!!! Sure I can click size slider in tool's menu and scale brush faster but it's still not fast and smooth and I have to change my focus from the image I'm editing to options on the side of the screen. GIMP developers should totally add similar option - scaling with mouse drag. People have asked for such option for years including myself.

I tend to use GIMP for geometric designs with large areas of flat, even colour, but for digital drawing, painting, and animation, it's Krita all the way.

I'm an old Photoshop user and I was kind of desperate since after having a new Mac with OS Big Sur Gimp just doesn't work very well. It doesn't make those dotted lines when selecting something and it is kind of slowly . Thanks to this video I discovered Krita and it works very well with Big Sur and it reminds me much more of photoshop. it is very intuitive. For my needs I prefer it to Gimp.

Thanks for the video. I miss that Krita can work with .xcf files so I can take advantage of both softwares. But obviously, they are separate projects and each dedicated to different things. Sorry for the mistakes.

I grew up using Adobe CS2 up until Windows 10 I've been looking for a clone for Linux for a long while and Krita nailed it. For me its what I was hoping Gimp would be. I've learned to use Gimp over the years and will continue to use Gimp when I need to but I'm feeling Krita a lot more.

Issues with Krita filter layer filter options are an annoyance. Lack of nondestructive workflow in gimp is a showstopper. But you're right that GIMP has better selection tools and much better guideline support. Also better warping and clone/heal tools. With text, GIMP supports kerning while krita does not (showstopper!). But Krita has nondestructive text layer styles while text manipulation and effects in GIMP is hoop jumping destructive rasterization insanity. Best to just use Inkscape for text. However, once you've finished assets in GIMP, export them to PNG using an export->layers script. Then import to Krita for compositing. IOW: Use BOTH, not one or the other.

I disagree that that the drawing gap is small between Krita and Gimp. Krita is is the best digital painter program by far, so many options to customize your drawing experience. Drawing with Gimp was painful last time I tried.

krita have a lot of little problem and program crush bug that makes me headache but gimp is worse than that. Comparing the two is an insult to krita.

I think it would be awesome if you compared PD Howler to Krita for digital painting. Of course there is a lot more that PD Howler can do, like 3d landforms, animation and general filter work. But, first and foremost it's a painting program! You should check it out!

A most useful video. Thank you. I find it refreshing and amusing that you have the Dell laptop. I'm so used to seeing an apple logo on these types of channels, that it was fitting to see the dell given the subject matter of the video.

If gimp was more polished and had a tools space lock that pops open on hoverover. then this video wouldn't be valid video. Interesting comparison. I love the gimp lasseo at the moment. The hold release laws are pretty sweet.

Who would uses Krita as a picture editor? I would never use krita for that but either photoshop or gimp. And the same reason applies for drawing. Why use photoshop or gimp to draw when there are other programs made for that purpose? Though, I always use reference picture while drawing on krita with the pin tool. Krita has enough features since the 5.0 update dropped and some new features were added like dragging colour from the palettes directly to to your drawing or the the newly added storyboarding for animation. I don't hate people who paint on photoshop but I won't do it on there as there's no pop-up palette and I love that.

No disrespect to the video, but looks like most of the criticisms are on Filter Layer implementation - which is newish in Krita - and which Gimp does not even gosh darn have.
@jonathandawson3091
@jonathandawson3091 9 месяцев назад
Second criticism is on RAW files which again Gimp does not even have. And too many power options for opening RAW files is a criticism?? No offense but I am beginning to question this video.
