Hey, at least GIMP tells you where to get the functionality you need. In my experience, GIMP excels at image editing, Krita excels at image creation. Put them together and you have a dandy replacement for Photoshop.

You have to consider that Photoshop is also designed and advertised as an editing tool, since, at the very least, that allows Adobe to sell you its other tools and then insist you run them at the same time for interoperability while they desperately compete for memory…

Krita is a real powerhouse. I remember first seeing Krita when it was still in alpha and beta; I was hesitant to use it back then because I didn't want to learn a program that wasn't "settled" on everything yet (if you get what I mean). Needless to say, I've been drawing with it now for the past few months (yes I'm an artist) and I'm super impressed by it. I'm actually kinda shocked by how competent Krita is as an alternative to PhotoShop.

I used to bash on Gimp, but i have to admit... by ver 2.8 it really improved with the single window mode... but by 2.10 the added features and posibilities really made the experience really nice, as nice as to compete for real with photoshop (at least for me as a non pofesional -but enthusiast- photographer). On the "flaws" you mentioned: - The lack of native Raw threatment it is not a problem to be honest, since i do work with Rawtherapee (ver 5.5) that it is also free (GPLv3) soft. And RT combined with my Gimp (2.10.10) allows me to reveal extensive work with RT and then pick the best images and edit them with Gimp... but if i'd like to, i could just open the Raw with Gimp and then the Rawtherapee plugin would open the file, let me adjust some parameters and then reveal it to Gimp... so no downsize there at least for me. - The gradient tool... well i have to take your word on it since on my pictures the Vigneting effect or correction is performed with RawTherapee, since in the Raw format i can extract the most out of the image, i'm pretty shure that's a tool i want to use Before moving to Gimp... furthermore it is a really easy aspect to change on a picture so i won't take me much time even if i'm working with a lot of pictures. Most Gimp effects used to be of a mediocre quality back in the day... i haven't noticed that since some time ago (2.8 and later) but again... i will take your word on this subject. - Layout: Gimp is my first image edition tool... i've tried to learn photoshop before getting into photography and i was never able to learn how to use it... but Gimp was kind of easier to learn at least for me. With time i also learned that you can pretty much customize the layout the way you want it, and there's Photogimp and Gimpshop in order to make the Gimp more "photoshop clone". Why keep using Gimp? well, mainly 2 reasons: 1) As a Photographer, i do not find the need for other soft. I know that from different jobs you might hit different needs. Gimp has been here forever, and there are lots of online tutorials and manuals on how to do just about everything, both in spanish (my native lang.) and english 2) I do know for a fact that Gimp will keep improving, maybe not that much on every revision (from x.x.1 to x.x.2) but you can expect very good improvements every once in a while... maybe 10 revisions or even an entire version number (x.2.x to x.4.x). The larger community means more donations/income and therefore more juice to improve the software. BTW if you use any free software (or open source) as a photographer, being Gimp, Krita, RawTherapee, Darktable or any other, and you make money or take any profit of your activity... please please donate a fraction of your income to the developers of that soft... soft is as much of a tool as a camera body, and by supporting the free soft they can update the soft more and more to meet new standars, correct bugs, improve stuffs and more. 1-2 american dollars per year per soft (that might imply 5/10 bucks a year) should be reasonable for anybody

Based on your needs, what you need isn't Gimp or Krita but Adobe White Room or Dark Table, a free alternative. A Raster image editor like Gimp is needed for more in-depth image manipulation that goes beyond the scope of a RAW image editor like Dark Table.

Hi Francisco Quintero! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a great comment! It's great to hear that you're checking into #GIMP and #Krita up front, as they are both very powerful tools! I actually like how GIMP doesn't have a raw converteer by default, because you can use the one you prefer. If you wanted one built in though, you can use partha's builds at partha.com, they have nut NUFRaw built in as a raw converter, and can also use others, plus it includes the very funand useful G'MIC plugin,and it also integrates with the Nik plugins and some panorama stitching software if you want use those. There are builds there for windows, Linux, and Apple. I usually use these builds, not because the raw converter is built in, but just because I like the way they're built and configured out of the box, I find it more user friendly, to me anyway, than plain GIMP.
@Photolearningism
@Photolearningism 4 года назад
You make a great point in that there is a lot of value in having the ability to implement a RAW importer of choice! Since making this video, I've come to better understand the powerful features built into the loaders (such as DT and RT). However, from a user experience standpoint, I'd make a friendly suggestion to the GIMP development team that either a particular "starter" RAW importer be packaged along with their installer as an option, or at least build in basic RAW import capabilities with the option to add a more powerful, 3rd party one, so as not to dampen the initial use of the tool. This way, the tool is fully functional out of the box, but still gives freedom to the user to seek out a more powerful RAW importer. Thank you so much for joining the discussion!

In Krita smudge is a set of different smudge/blur tools in the brush section.
@Photolearningism
@Photolearningism 4 года назад
Hi Bhazor! Thank you so much for watching! I've been meaning to dig this out in Krita and figure out smudge - this is very helpful! The tool design for Krita is a bit different from other graphical tools, is that the typical "tools" can be found as "brushes", which just takes some getting used to.
@scottpetrovic
@scottpetrovic 4 года назад
@@Photolearningism Krita has more functionality as brushes since it is designed more for illustrators and painters. Painters usually want to switch and customize brushes with these effects. Painters also want to mix different effects together. It would be difficult to mix a smudge and liquefy effect together (like rotate) if they were two separate tools.

@laurentvj
@laurentvj 5 лет назад
In krita you don't have smudge tool and clone tool, but have corresponding brush engines. Yes, it is very counterintuitive when you are used to software like photoshop or gimp. You don't have the saturation adjustement filter alone, but you can use the HSV adjustement filter. The cross channel adjustement filter is for a complete different purpose and allow to control the increase or decrease of a channel based on another channel (by default saturation from luminosity). It is rather complicated to use, but very powerfull. The curve adustement filter is also very powerfull once you notice that, in krita, it can also control hue, saturation or lightness. By the way, in krita, you have a n-point perspective option in the transform tool, and if you press controll with the free-transform option enabled you would rotate your image in 3d. Yet again, I thing the tool option docker is hidden by default, which is not the user-friendlist way of laying out things for photographers, who would use tools options a lot. But krita is a tool mainly for illustrators and I have to admit, as an illustrator myself, that I hardly ever use a different tool than the painting brush.

Hi Thomas Bremer! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a great comment! I did some reading on the subject and there's some interesting information there, about how banding can occur in image software (photographylife.com/what-is-color-banding-and-how-to-fix-it). In looking at different bit depths in #Krita, I'm wondering if you may be experiencing an attempted change in bit depth processing between integer and float, which can cause alterations the color spectrum (including support for negative values). For curiosity, are you possible shifting between 16-bit integer to either 16-bit float or 32-bit float?
@tomhomemightier
@tomhomemightier 4 года назад
@@Photolearningism Thanks for the response. Ill have to take a look at that link. I initially started with a regular 8 bit project since most of the time thats fine for textures, but the bump map (a greyscale map) would have heavy banding. I then did try changing the project settings to 16 bit int and then to float and then to 32 bit, saved different file types like exr and tiff, and nothing worked. If I made it in Gimp and tried exporting, even after starting a project at 8 bit and converting it to 16 or 32 bit, it worked fine, so I'm not sure where the problem lies. Its not that big of a deal I suppose, but when I get more time I'll do more tests and report back! :)

Lol, maybe change Gradient in GIMP to Shape Radial and Mode to Overlay, decrease opacity or draw more grayish, then there isn't such a hard line... For me the toolplaces in GIMP out of the box are just right, its terrible to have it spread out all over the side. Plugins are what makes GIMP great, so you are supposed to install them for having the most powerful program, and then it does all the things you missed in comparison to Krita. I don't know about Krita's plugin possibilities, but can you then also achieve what GIMP is capable of? Hi Jeffrey Jumisko! Thank you so much for watching! This video was among my first serious attempts to create helpful content and someone graciously pointed out a few videos later that they were only SD. I found I had to make manual adjustments to #OBS, even though using an HD camera to ensure the recording itself was HD. It's unfortunate for the earlier videos, as they are, well, as they are, but going forward, I did ensure HD was used. Where you able to give #GIMP or #Krita a try? Curious how your experience was!

@@Photolearningism Hey, so glad you caught on. I use OBS as well. I use both programs quite a lot and am getting better at each. I use Krita for creating UV maps for 3D modeling. It is far easier to scale and transform textures. Gimp is more my go to when I need a lot of filters and tools, as in logo design and working with text. It is also great for creating original textures. I’ll give your later videos a go.

Personally I think Gimp is more candidate to be a free photoshop alternative , unfortunately Gimp developers are lazy or not focusing on making it what we want, they do the minimum just to keep it alive, I dont know why , may be Adobe messed with them.

As a complete amateur that has only used gimp for some memes and fooling around, I only have one question? Why use different pictures for the tools? Doesn't the type of image can affect how tools like gradients work?
@Photolearningism
@Photolearningism 4 года назад
Hi furter189! Thank you so much for watching! I later discovered that the gradient controls in #GIMP were in a separate widget and could be configured to transition the color far more gracefully. That aside, the type of image shouldn't negatively affect the output of a given image type, unless the image is frequently transposed between encoding types and or color modes. If curious about some examples of how color comes into play, I did a focused video here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wa1QSaUzefc.html - Hope that helps!

How does Krita work on lower end hardware?
@Photolearningism
@Photolearningism 4 года назад
Hi MobileDecay! Having tried Krita a few different ways (including on a Linux-enabled Chromebook and a scaled-down Ubuntu virtual PC), I can attest that it can work with somewhat limited resources. On the official Krita page (krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/), it mentions the following requirements: Operating System:Windows 8.1 or Higher, OSX 10.12, Linux \ RAM:Recommended 4GB or higher \ Optional GPU:OpenGL 3.0 or higher \ Graphics Tablet Supported:Wacom, Huion, Yiyinova, Surface Pro. I've read that it can work with at least 2GB of ram, and I know from testing that it works with lower-end CPUs, like the Celeron Intel chip (which is known as an "economy" CPU). Software response can get a little choppy if trying process-intensive effects such as Gaussian Blur. If you have the option, I suggest trying it out, as it's a free and highly embraced by the art community. Hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching and joining the conversation!

When it comes to RAW, GIMP relies on 3rd party software to work with the format. Why would they want to reinvent the wheel, when there are tools already available? Most of GIMP users don't even work with RAW images, so why would they bundle a bunch of bloat with it? I see you use Windows. Well, GIMP comes from the world of the Unix philosophy. If you don't know what it is, then look it up. As a Windows user, you might be confused by the term "3rd party". In Windows, the standard base system and all the essential tools are made by Microsoft. Then you want to work with photos/images and you expect it's all made by the same company, for example Adobe. In free software, "3rd party" means something completely different. In Linux and other Unix-like systems (and free software in general), you have a kernel from one project, basic shell tools from another project, a desktop environment from another project, a window manager from another project, a file manager from yet another project and everything works together. GIMP is just one piece of the puzzle.

Hi ClifffSVK! Thank you so much for watching and leaving some feedback! I can appreciate your perspective, noting the distinction in how these tools fit together. Having actively tested open source technologies for a while (both on Windows and Linux), I can see exactly what you're referring to! I've had the opportunity to explore technologies such as #gPhoto and #FFMpeg and can see the relationships and integrations laid out by design. It makes a lot more sense, as you noted, switching an understanding of software from the idea of self-contained packages to interrelated services.

Gimp's gradient tool can be adjusted, to give the exact effect and fade in you want. If you had adjusted the points on the gradient line, you would have gotten the exact fade you wanted.There is also a Vinette tool you can use/ It is all about getting more familiar with Gimp. I think If you do, you will enjoy it as a Photographer. For Raw support, Gimp supports Raw Therapee and Dark table. Either program can work along side Gimp and be launched from within Gimp. At least in the case of Krita, OpenGL can be disabled if this feature is causing heavy lag (in some cases, certain driver sets have bugs that result in failures while using OpenGL). I found the following details on Krita's documentation. In leafing through GIMP's documentation, it seems to be very similiar. Hi Murad Beybalaev ! Thank you so much for watching! No grief taken! 😀 Since making this video, I've come to understand more of the design behind open source tools, in that they are built with a high degree of dependency on other open source frameworks and tools. Once I grasped this, #GIMP's approach made a lot more sense for how it is built. That aside, I do think it would be to #GIMP's benefit to package in a version of #Darktable or #RawTherapee, much like other open source tools include #FFMpeg alongside their builds as a convenience to users. It would be one less headache for the benefit of the community. Thank you so much for the feedback!

So after digging a bit, the Krita development team identified a number of issues with maintaining color profiles during export to print process. It was suggested on the Krita forums to use Scribus for printing, but this tool is design almost exclusively for printing vector-based images (also supports PDF). A cleaner tool for printing looks to be GIMP. My suggestion would be to save work from Krita as a PNG to ensure the color profile ports cleanly, then try out GIMP for the formatted print process. Another option (if using Windows) would be to right click the exported PNG and select "Print", which will use the built-in windows print tool (I haven't had the open to test this out fully, but it appears to work with quick tests). Hope that helps!
