Rhonda Fleming looks so beautiful here. Sadly, she died recently - aged 97. A grand life, well-lived.

These behind-the-scenes films and videos of so many of the past stars (who are basically all gone now-just as actual film is going) in unstaged, non-acted (reality TV?) sequences, are priceless. I wish we could get much more informal footage of the historical giants of the entertainment industry.

Wonderful video. Some of the RKO Alumni that were living, but absent that day in 1979: Cary Grant, Randolph Scott, Robert Mitchum, Ida Lupino, Maureen O'Hara, Jean Simmons, Simon Simone, George Cukor, Dolores Del Rio, Ann Harding, Irene Dunne, Joan Bennett, Katharine Hepburn, Mary Astor, Ingrid Bergman, Gene Raymond, Orson Wells, Joesph Cotten, Loretta Young, Robert Young, Kenneth Tobey, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Van Johnson, Eve Arden, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Mary Astor. Paul Stewart, Ruth Warrick, George Coulouris. Note: John Wayne died in June 1979. Not knowing the exact date of the reunion, he could have been living when it occurred.

Of all the Hollywood studios, no studio was more Jekyll-and-Hyde than RKO Radio Pictures. RKO had the ability to turn out classics like 'Citizen Kane" or the Astaire-Rogers musicals or "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" or "Gunga Din" or "I Remember Mama," but due to bad decisions or bad management, it never achieved the fame it could've had. When it finally started rolling in the right direction in the late 1940s---whether due to some of its own films, or distributing films like "The Best Years of Our Lives" for Samuel Goldwyn---it made the fatal decision of being sold to Howard Hughes, whose bad decisions and eccentricities sounded the death knell for the beeping tower.

William, you have eloquently encapsulated the history of RKO Radio Pictures with this paragraph. Dore Schary was responsible for the turnaround when he became studio chief in 1947 but left in 1948 after Howard Hughes took over and would let Schary run the studio the way he wanted to

10:32 His name was cut off but that was the estimable HERMES Pan, Astaire's co-choreographer for more than half his films and most of his TV work as well as numerous non-Fred films -- earning an Oscar and Emmy along the way. He was also a fine performer though he, like all the rest of us, lacked Fred's 'it' factor: Terrific dance with Betty Grable: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7nFnEsMv-Vg.html Very Ginger-Fred-ish dance with Rita Hayworth: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ldcpHxHNh60.htmlm Thanks for posting!

Annie is 93 years old. These wonderful actresses and actors who live so long. A special mightiness to them. Most in this video are all gone, well they're all gone except Ann. The other day Debbie Reynolds the last star of Singing in the Rain, gone, due to her daughters death the day before. Heart break, maybe, but she just couldn't fathom being with out Carrie. The greatest talents that the world has ever had in this 20th century are all practically gone. Doris Day is still with us, but for how long? Most are living in nursing homes in other states or countries, and even in their own homes being taken care of by nurses and staff (if they can afford it still). To me, it just shows that humans weren't made to suffer and have a few short years of life, but to have lived forever and enjoy what they did best. If the trees in California are 4,000 years old, why aren't we?

I thought it was interesting that Katherine Hepburn wasn't there as she had been a performer at RKO. Lucille Ball also but then again she had bought the RKO studio for Desilu studios. Lovely to see Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire and all the others. Janet Leigh ,such a joy to see her on here.

Hepburn showed up only once at the Academy Awards...why would she show up for this?
@patimuse
@patimuse 5 лет назад
Hepburn was still a working star.... on her way to winning her fourth Oscar! I wonder what this group thought of that unprecedented win & Hepburn's unusual longevity on top - I think Ginger was the only acting Oscar winner in this group. Hepburn's The Corn Is Green aired in 1979; during the interview here, Ginger wants to do the musical version "Miss Moffat" (maybe old rivalry between Terry Randall & Jean Maitland?) but she should have consulted with Bette Davis who failed to open that disastrous show on Broadway.

Backstage at the Met . . . they get to see all the performances. I have wondered that when 'they' see something extraordinary, do they applaud? Performers would know . . . IF the crew applauds, you're probably on track.

I’m 60 and I got to know the names of these stars up to age 15. All of them have been gone , many for over 40 years . Very famous in their day and yet today I don’t think the average 25 year old would recognize more than 3 of these names. This event had these stars sitting in cheap metal fold out chairs wearing clothes no woman would be caught dead in, bad lighting with hair styles that put 30 years on to their age. Some of the men are barely 60 and look 85.

Joel McCrea had the smarts to quit before he got old, like Cary, Randolph Scott and Bill Powell. Scott's and McCrea's farewell, moreover, was one of their very best, Sam Peckinpah's 'Ride the High Country'- better than Grant's 'Walk, Don't Run' or Cagney's brief, depressing re-emergence in 'Ragtime'.
