i think it was more confusing when they wouldn't show a single bed in a couples bedroom. had to be two beds. kids had to be confused. it was extremely rare for couples (especially under 70.) to not share a bed. there had to be questions from kids watching shows like The Dick Van Dyke show with their parents. "mom, how come Rob and Laura have their own beds? you and daddy don't. why?"

Hey Rick I love that a number of the images you’ve chosen are from one of my favorite episodes … the one where Mary Ann thinks she’s Ginger, and everyone plays along so as not to disturb whatever is going on with Mary Ann, and Ginger has to dress like Mary Ann and pretend like she’s Mary Ann, and the clothes don’t fit, Mary Ann can’t perform or sing well, etc. I quote to myself sometimes Mr. Howell’s line from that episode (in his upper crust accent …) “Mary Ann isn’t Mary Ann anymore, she’s Ginger. Ginger isn’t Ginger anymore, she’s Mary Ann.” Thanks for the fond memories!! 😁

I wonder if the censors were concerned about how Tina/Ginger acted towards visitors. Particularly, Duke Williams, she was literally writhing in the sand on the "beach" when he was exercising/flexing for the girls. Dawn/Mary Ann played it more subtle, but Ginger was swooning over Denny/Duke. Great stuff...keep 'em coming!

I was born in 1969. I have two visual memories from 1971, rare Yet my parents have confirmed, and we don’t have any photos. One involves the interior of our car, upholstery- not photographed, and I’ve been scanning all my Dad’s slides -none of car interior. One memory I have, in that house in 1971-‘72 is “Gilligan’s Island” on the tv. (And, Sesame Street) Now, I won’t know the episode, and it would have been in syndication then. Only, later, as an adolescent, did I watch “GA” for Mary Anne, and Ginger,…not for the comedy, misadventure, or wacky-fun. 😉

I just saw the episode "Ghost a Go-Go" (my absolute favorite, btw) and in the scene with Ginger and Mary Ann making their dummies for the boat, Mary Ann's dummy is sitting at a table (or maybe it's their vanity). Two coconuts are on the table in front of the dummy, as if they're breasts. I wonder if it was a little visual gag that got past the censors?

The Belly Button rule, the most famous show that had a problem with that rule was I Dream of Jeanie. But, as you said, back then things were different. You couldn't show married couples in bed together, Like Lucy & Rick, Rob & Laura, & Fred & Wilma. Yet somehow they all ended up having children.

Looking back at it now, I always thought the the character of Ginger was supposed to be a Marilyn Monroe/Raquel Welch/ Jane Russell type. I guess the censorship rules for film and television were very different, because Marilyn, Raquel and Jane always showed much more cleavage.

Rick, I always enjoy your videos. I hope to one day watch them the same day they come out. I've always known about the Ginger "cleavage" and the Mary Ann "navel" scenarios. Regarding Tina, it's not like she's Raquel Welch. The costumer designers made her dresses. Like so many of you, I've seen the show countless times, and it's not like Tina's popping out of dresses. In fact, the dress that she wore mostly, like at 1:05, didn't flatter her "cleavage" in my opinion. In fact, instead of flatter-ing her, it made her look flatter! LOL!! I suppose many have seen Tina in God's Little Acre. She certainly was displaying major cleavage in that movie. As an aside, I think it is great that her character in Gilligan's Island began the slang word Ginger to refer to a person with red hair.

As a kid watching the show, I definitely noticed the odd fitting of clothes, especially on Mary Anne in those tiny shorts that somehow covered her navel. I always felt it was a little hypocritical because Ginger and Mary Anne made even the least of the episodes good. The producers knew it and I believe they intentionally made sure we would occasionally see some cleaveage and some belly button.

By today's standards this is pretty tame but back in the sixties cleavage & belly buttons were considered very risque !!! Also back then married couples had to sleep in separate beds!!! It's so different today. I was watching I believe the renewed "Outer Limits" (made sometime in the 90s) with my kids and a woman dropped her dress and it showed everything! EVERYTHING!! My son (17 at the time) and my daughter (16) had interesting reactions. My son's jaw dropped and he just stared (typical teen guy reaction). After about 5 or 10 seconds, my daughter said in a huff, "Why are we still watching this!?" Times have sure changed.

Visually, things were more restrictive in the 1960s. However, people were much freer with what they could SAY in the 1960s, there were very few "speech codes" like we have now. Back in the 1960s you could say just about anything, and people would laugh it off. Today, many people are hyper sensitive to words.

I've often seen sports video used but run on the backside. In other words all the advertising and graphics are backwards. It's a legal thing and won't work with audio.

why the bellybutton? it's the same on men. unlike nipples, bellybuttons are not a sexual feature or function. I'm almost 60 and still don't get it.

I always figured it was just an easy point to use to limit the amount of skin being shown, not so much an issue with the belly button itself. Kind of like how some schools say girls' pants have to go as far down as when they hold their hands to their sides.

I more interested in the Episode "Up at Bat" where MANY Times you can see Dawn's White Panties both rear & front in her incredible SHORT Baby Doll Dress, when she battles the fake flying bat !
