I am refining the root base on my Ginseng Ficus microcarpa and pruning the top before the tree goes inside for the winter.
This tree is one of the Ficus sisters, called "Fancy".
I have lots of updates of my trees and I have some new ones too!

Nigel I thought I would put my Ficus Bonsai photo in for you to take a look at which is just over four foot, I got this from a neighbour two doors up, which was grown in the garden and it was going to be cut and destroyed but I was lucky to rescue it five years ago, so this Is my home tree, boy does it have a long way to go but I just love the roots, I have it in the pot which is in my vegie patch,

I notice when you do your profile pruning, you move the shears in the direction of the cut as you are cutting. Is there a reason for that technique? My naive approach (especially because I'm not that confident about what I'm doing) is to hold the shears stead as I cut.

Nigel Saunders - your wine succulent - Cissus Tuberosa - habitat - Pueblo Mexico. I have this for over 2years and I absolutely love it. Need succulent treatment and some of the plants form south part of the globe still performing growing season in our winter which probably is due to strong habitat gene. I very like all of your posts. Man, I can't believe how rapidly those Kapok trees are developing! I wonder how they would react to a severe prune (say to 6 or 12 inches above soil line) after reaching such heights. Either way, seems like fun material. Fancy has come a long way. She left her sister Plain in the dust when it comes to development.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
I think they would be fine pruning them back to almost any height. I have seen pictures of people cutting them back severely and they sprout a number of branches below the cut point. They even cut back the full size trees at the Tomb Raider temple in Cambodia. I think to keep the trees safe and under control for the tourists. The cuttings root easily in water or soil, I'll be cutting the rain forest back before the trees come in for the winter. Conner also gave me back the Giant Kapok tree in the video, I forgot to mention that. I think I'll keep that one as a giant tree and see how it does!

Hey Nigel, thanks for your videos. For some reason (could be my alkaline water around here or the type of soil I have been getting from the store) but my soil is generally pretty alkaline. I already made some bonsai with it before seeing your bonsai soil video (fuller's earth on the way!), all of which have been conifers of sorts (juniper, lemon cypress and yew). Luckily soil is draining quite well but it's gonna start raining pretty constantly here in Vancouver come fall an now I wonder about the following: 1. Does alkalinity really matter? Should I worry about getting my ph down? 2. Can I switch their soil with the new soil mix after I get all my ingredients shipped here? I've potted those bonsai after pruning leaves and roots, so I feel hesitant about taking them out of the pot that they're trying to get accustomed to (after being cut like that). It's only been couple of weeks since the pruning and planting. 3. If it's too sensitive to switch the soil, is there any good way to bring the pH down (if it matters)? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
We were just talking about this at the bonsai meeting last night! Because the soil is so porous and we water it often, the soil tends to quickly take on the PH level of the water you use. Bonsai trees are usually outside and get rained on sometimes for many days in a row, this also helps flush the soil to a more neutral level. I have never had a problem with my soil (that I know of) and most people in the club don't worry about PH levels. It wouldn't hurt to test you soils if you are having problems with your trees. I wouldn't re pot at this time, your new roots may be just growing in and will be very fragile.

Hey Nigel, what are some moss types that do well in higher light low humidity. Do you use different moss species for certain bonsia?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
I pick moss that is growing in fill sun, you can find it on driveways and sidewalks in the cracks. This type of moss will do well on your bonsai, but you do need to water it and mist it, to keep it moist on hot afternoons.

@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
The tree must be kept in ideal conditions, warmth, humidity and bright light. A clear plastic bag over the tree and pot will help keep the tree humid, be sure to poke some air holes in the bag. Mist the tree every few hours and keep it out of the hot afternoon sun. The roots will start to form in a few days, but you need to baby the tree until it is growing strongly!

I've had that vine before. They're horribly invasive and even tried to eat my house, kill it with fire!! It'll still come back, but at least you'll have tried. Do you still need hedge apples? I noticed them swelling up all around and anticipate that they'll soon begin to drop. I used ro collect them for my auntie who put them in her basement to deter pests. Anyhoo, if you'd care for any I'lll happily ship some your way once they hit the ground. I've read that settlers would pour a slurry of hedgeapple into a shallow trench dug around the perimeter of their farmstead and in no time would have a hedge row "cow high, bull strong and hog tight".

Nigel I don't know if I should trunk chop my Ginkgo biloba and my Eastern larch (Larix laricina). They don't have any branches or visible buds where I want to chop their trunk. Do you know what I should do? Love your videos!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
I wouldn't chop the Larch without leaving good green needles on the lower part. It may be best to get the tree really healthy and they will sometimes put out new branches on the lower trunk, then much later when these branches are strong, cut the tree back to those branches. If your Ginkgo is healthy and vigorous, you should be able to cut the tree back in height to almost anywhere. I would do this late fall. Thanks and happy growing!

Nigel, the "sea onion" is called Ledebouria socialis, or "silver squill". I have one that is quite large. It seems yours is planted quite deeply, I believe they are meant to be planted with the bulb part above ground, with just the roots in the soil. I have one that is quite large with many many babies coming off. They are rather drought resistant and I only water mine when the main bulbs begin to show slight wrinkling.

Hi, I absolutely love watching your videos, they are so inspirational to me. Do you have any ficus midnight beauty variety? I live in tropical North Queensland Australia and it is very humid and hot here. I have a midnight beauty ficus that is in the very midst of training, I am planning on growing it as a medium size banyan style with lots of aerial roots, seeing as there are plenty of huge banyan weeping figs around here, I think it will go well. Apparently it is a type of weeping fig (benjamina) but it tends to be very upright growing to me. Just wandering if you had any of this variety because I can't seem to find any of these as bonsai on the internet? Also, I didn't know they could do this, but we have had quite a lot of rain and there is aerial roots sprouting from already formed aerial roots 😱 would love to hear your opinion on this. Thank you. 👍

It had grown a lot over the summer and I decided to trim it massively, and use wire to shape it. However, it’s needles are now starting to brown, and I’m afraid I may have caused too much stress to the tree. Do you have any advice on what I should do to help this tree recover?
@TheBonsaiZone

It is best to keep the tree in a bright location, but one that doesn't get the direct afternoon sun. the browning may be sunburned needles. Misting the tree often will help also.

Nigel, do you fertilize your tropical trees in the cold season?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
I do and only because they grow well during most of the winter. I water much less in the winter than when the trees are outside, so the tropical trees get much less fertilizer. (I water and fertilize together) During the coldest and darkest days of winter, I can go a week without having to water, so very little fertilizer is supplied.

@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
People in our club are using "Windex" the window cleaner. They spray it on the tree and leave it on. Repeat the application every 3 days for 4 applications. The shells of the scale will dry up and just fall off. If you prefer a non chemical solution, you'll have to pick off each shell and spray the tree with water top and bottom of all the leaves.

I don't have a Fukien tea bonsai, but I'll keep my eyes open for one. They are not common around here and few people in the club have them. Thanks Andrew!

Don’t take too much off the roots at any one time, they’re fussy about their roots! And watch out for bugs.

@@TheBonsaiZone Ah okay! Well thanks anyway, your videos got me into the hobby :-) Hopefully I'll have something nice to show off in a few years. Could you recommend any nice beginner trees? I'm living in the UK so it's a bit colder and less sunny over here.

I love your trees but I do wonder if you have ever tried some ot the traditional Japanese species like maple or any of the Japanese pines.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
I have, but they are very expensive to buy and I always seem to get something eating my Japanese maples. My last Japanese maple got attacked this spring by boring insects. The Japanese pines so far, are out of my price range! They are very expensive to buy in nurseries and I've never seen any pre bonsai ones in my area. I will get some, if I can find some!

Hey Nigel. Great video as always! hows the small tamarix doing? maybe you could include it in your next video as an update? Also, congrats on soon making it to 100k!! what a milestone!

RU-vid has been a really positive experience and I really enjoy making the videos! I can remember reaching 100 subscribers and I was amazed, 100 K is unbelievable! Thanks for being part of the Bonsai Zone! The Tamarix didn't survive the winter, I was very sad to loose the little tree. I was going to bring it in the basement again, but our furnace broke during the first cold spell and I was busy collecting firewood to heat the house. I lost a handful of trees because of this, but I'll get a replacement when I get to the nursery.

Hello Nigel! Quickly, what camera do you use and what editing program do you recommend? Thanks!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
I have used a Canon T5i DSLR right from the start. I was thinking of getting a T7i next, but I'm thinking of maybe going mirror-less in the future, but I'll have to think about it! The T5I has made over 365 videos without fail. I find it will shut down in really hot weather if the camera is in full sun and you have to be careful about videos in wet weather as it is not sealed. I would recommend the T7i to anyone starting a RU-vid channel! I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio V11 for editing. It's not as fancy as some of the later versions, but it's easy to learn and it does the job!

Hi Nigel, I didn't see or hear you mention the Poinsettia ...aren't Poinsettia considered a tropical tree? Still growing? Always enjoy your videos!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
The Poinsettia unfortunately died, the large one got too cold in winter and the small one I had, died after I cut it back. It just never grew in new leaves and the trunk rotted away. I think I should have cut it back in summer! I will be getting another to replace them.

Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone RIP original tree and cuttings. Know that we all learned a lot from your video. I for one thought poinsettias were just little holiday plants for a table at a party. I may never see another Poinsettia with a woody trunk! Your work with plants always inspire and lead to something new, everything from researching plants in books or on the Internet or going out into the local woods for a hike.

Nice to hear Tag, I've picked up a lot of new trees this year, it's going to be hard fitting them inside for winter! It is a great time of year for long walks!

Is this tree made of many trees put together very tightly
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 лет назад
It is a single tree, it keeps growing aerial roots that fuse together with the trunk and every year it grows wider at the base! It was started from a bow store house plant in a 4 inch pot.
