A conversation with Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris in front of Giotto, Virgin and Child enthroned, surrounded by angels and saints (Ognissanti Madonna), c. 1300-05 (Uffizi, Florence)
Thank you once again for your interesting critique on this beautiful painting. Highlighting an improved understanding of perspective and a greater emphasis on realism. This is an excellent example of how a new style of painting was emerging. The heads straight up, with more detailed features, not tilting to the right and the figures showing greater "solidity". Amazing that in a relatively short time Giotto has moved away from the over stylised techniques to create such a "modern" rendition of The Madonna. Was there a symbolic significance that heads in earlier paintings were tilted?
been reading a book about florentine rennaisance art and it mentions vasaris lives , and the heroes of the three different time periods and what each of them brought to the evolution of art during this period, and he puts ciambue and giotto and in this first phase dosent he, as thier starting to move away from the strict rigid style of the gothic and byzantines to a more realistic natural emotionally deep style , that would go on to inspire artists in the next two stages . really interesting to learn more about these paintings as im still a beginner in this.
Jesus' transparent pink outfit is so precious. 🥰 And I love the opulent throne Giatto gave Mary in his version - beautiful shapes and precious stones. I'm a little guy, so I highly doubt the bottom cut-out angle is at my eye level (lol), but it's cool that Giatto considered the positioning of onlookers as he created this.
When I first studied this painting the colors were so dark and flat, none of the delicate tones could be seen in any of the work by Duccio, Cimabue, or Giotto. Its been a real pleasure to be able to make their attention to color available to those not in the museum.
@@smarthistory-art-history 🥰 You guys do beautiful things for people - educating, inspiring, granting access, etc - and should be very proud of your work. I'm truly grateful for it and can only hope to become part of something so special.
