The worst part of this series is the "love triangle" that drags on forever but in the end, apparently Maya was really just adopting Riley's personality to see if Lucas was good enough for her like.... what

Yeah... that was very dumb. And in earlier episodes before that crap started, it gave hints of Maya carring for him and Lucas carring for her. The evolution of their relationship was more natura than Riley meeting Lucas in teh subway and suddenly "we like each other and we should be together".

I was disappointed by the episode where Farkle gets tested for Autism, and everyone acts as if it's some awful disease, when he was acting fine with the possible diagnosis. At least they had a realistic portrayal with Smackle.
@Daftsy

I've been waiting for someone to bring this up. I honestly choose to pretend the ending of the Girl Meets I Am Farkle episode didn't happen. In my head, Farkle is autistic, and it was cowardly of them to not let him be. I also didn't like how they continued to use Smackle as a punchline for most of her scenes, especially considering there isn't a lot of autism representation in the media for girls as is. It felt very odd.

IF this show continued, I think the writers would have written smackle's actor (who I believe is trans now) would have a plot on transgender teens. If this happened, pretty sure farkle would have loved him/them (I forget the pronouns for the actor).

Well to be honest I really don’t think her naivety was the problem. Even Corey to some extent came of as innocent in the first few seasons because that’s what he was - innocent, a child. What worked so well for BMW is that he was actually shown the cruelty and suffering and injustice of the world as he grows up like many children do. And his character still came of as immature and young sometimes EVEN when he was married. They never rlly did that with Riley... which seems strange since the whole point of the show was that she “meets the world”.

The main problem with this show was it being on Disney , so there couldn't be any *REAL* conflict or challenging situations. Boy meets world dealt with puberty, hormones, sexual attraction, bullying, alcohol abuse, abusive parents, broken homes, parents being laid off, challenges of school , failing in life, feeling lost in the world... one of the best seasons wasnt even about Corey , it was Eric being lost in the world when he was done high school and didn't have good enough grades for College right away - Girl meets world had NONE of this. There was no challenge for these kids that wasn't summed up with ham-fisted lines and terrible dialogue. Though... Danielle Fishel is still looking absolutely amazing.

For those who are wondering about the story, from the trailer I got that: Jodie is now popular for some reason. That mean girl who wanted the Swedish guy in the first movie is the only person in Jodie’s life that’s still teasing her. That Swedish guy is there and he wants Jodie back. Short milk crate man and Jodie are not together despite that kiss in the first movie. Short milk crate man has to *gasp* develop an actual identity outside of being obsessed with Jodie. Jodie is in a musical and meets yet another guy who wants her meaning she has 3 guys after her the whole movie. And there’s some message about how “the biggest monsters we face are the ones in our own head” or something. So yeah. Jodie is popular, she’s only got one mean person in her life, she’s apparently a talented actress, and she’s got 3 boyfriends. I have no idea what the conflict in this film is supposed to be.

Disney Channel has a plural amount of teen shows that are practically rip-offs of iCarly. I don’t think I’ll ever check out Bizaardvark for having Jake Paul in it, but Girl Meets World is another example of an iC wannabe because like any other Nickcom, it has fans who would justify or deny their flaws that make these overpraised shows problematic, is purposefully insensitive towards minorities (including broke and/or disabled people) and has characters that are both one-dimensional stereotypes of genders and teenagers (not to mention how much prettier they are in real life and in the shows where they look the same for obvious reasons)!

No, I'm not from the US, so it wasn't dollars, but we did briefly touch the same subject on foreign currency. You know between Maya treating Farkle’s possible autism like it would be such a huge issue FOR HER Or Riley throwing a temper tantrum that Lucas and her dad didn’t tell her Lucas got into a fight at his old school when Lucas was under no obligation to tell her and it wasn’t any of her business at all Or both of them standing up at someone’s GOD FORSAKEN FUNERAL and delivered a speech about how today they learned that the world doesn’t revolve around them at the age of like 13 I genuinely don’t know which of these characters we’re supposed to like is worse. I mean, as a 12 yo girl, being told one of your best friends might have a diagnosis, that you 1: know nothing about (because, how would you), 2: don't know if it's good, but diagnosis' usually aren't so you assume the worst, and 3. dont know what consequences that follows, probably isn't all too nice to hear. I don't wanna defend the way the episode presented the subject of autism, but I can't see how it's a flaw of the character that she don't want something to drastically change her world, or even that this might just be how this kid copes with stuff like this. The writers did a poor job of handling the subject for sure, they could have clarified it in the end that Autism isn't a bad thing, just that people are different, or even embracing Farkle having autism, instead of what they did. But for gods sake, they aree 12-13 yo teenagers, not grown adults.

So I blame THEM for not having the show's other tween/teen characters grow, become educated and ultimately show support for Farkle regardless of whatever the experts chose to diagnose him instead of having them (and Cory+Topanga as well as Farkle's own parents) treat the possible autism diagnosis as though it was a terminal condition that would have doomed him to have a sad fate!

@@venaev I'd say most average people don't know a whole lot about Autism, unless someone close to them happens to have it. It's hard to educate most people about it because it often manifests differently in people. I'd put money on it that the writers of this episode knew that, especially considering that the audience for this show is young. They knew they would be introducing the concept to people. And as an introduction to what autism is, this was AWFUL. Like D.A.R.E teaching kids about drugs, levels of AWFUL. It fear mongers. It makes people who have autism out to be "THE OTHER". It spoke of horrible stereotypes about autistic people not being able to feel love or empathy like "normal" people. and at the end of the episode Autism is not treated like a thing to be normalized, it treats it as not having it as a bullet dodged.

Smackle saying she’s autistic at the end of the episode was a cheap way for the writers to get out of the massive ableist hole they dug themselves into and I don’t buy it. I just want to say that the whole "Farkle might be autistic oh wait not he's not" felt so forced. I wasn't ever into this show because is felt really weird with all it's contrived "dark and serious" moments, but dang. Talking as someone with diagnosed Asperger's, the only thing I remember about that episode is that they kept going "Oh no maybe he doesn't have it. He's ok but what if he's not." Like??? A diagnosis explains something about you, it's not a court sentencing that you'll never be "normal" after.

Definitely felt like one of those "Very Special Episode" episodes, where it talks about something like a death in the family or drugs or teenage pregnancy as a way to get the topic to kids, and then they just never show that issue again or include it in any more storylines. It reminds me of when they made Bella Thorne's character in Shake it Up have dyslexia in one episode, create a whole bunch of drama, then never mention it again in the show run. They treated her diagnosis like some huge secret/ scandal as well when it was eventually revealed.

Ableism is extremely hurtful and causes harm no matter who the target is. If you substituted Farkle being afraid he’s on the spectrum with something like him being afraid of having diabetes and keep everyone saying that he’s “normal” and acting like having diabetes is the worst thing ever, you know people would have rioted immediately. I’m just sick of the double standard that being ableist is a bad thing to do unless it’s about autism.

@@musiclover_kb4913that doesn’t make this episode less awful, if Smackle was the one who was actually autistic she should have been the one who talked about it to their classmates, not Farkle, it’s again that situation of a neurotypical person explaining to other NTs how it’s like to live with autism, but they still talk about it as if it’s a bad thing as if it’s something to be ashamed of, as if she would be happier if she was more like them. Even the way they portray the diagnosis is awful, they talk as if having autism or not is something that you can tell by a physical exam or something and it isn’t, they say Farkle had all the signs of being autistic but then they say he isn’t, and it’s said that Smackle was diagnosed when she was 5 and Farkle was being tested by doctors and all during his teenage years and the thing is that’s the exact opposite, it’s usually easier for autistic boys to be diagnosed at an early age because the way it’s done is usually more adapted to the signs boys show but autistic girls tend to be diagnosed in their teenage years, this episode would have worked much better if Smackle was the one who was being tested for an autism diagnosis and Farkle told her he was diagnosed with autism at age 5 but he rather not tell his friends about it until then

But no the writers decided to retcon their relationship and why they broke up by vilifying Angela and saying she broke Shawn’s heart and never talked to him again when in BMW it was a mutual decision and they only did it because she was about to move away for a year or so, they did it to try and convince us she was bad for him because they intended to match-make Shawn with Maya’s mother Katie just because. I mean if you took out all mentions of autism in this particular episode and then replaced all mentions of the disorder with something like diabetes and have lines like “You can’t have diabetes! You’re normal!”, how do you think people would react to *that* ? They would be pretty angry and upset and rightly so because having diabetes doesn’t mean you aren’t a normal person. Look I’m fine if some sitcom talks about autism in a very respectful way that isn’t patronizing or calling us weird and “not normal.” Treat us like the human beings with actual thoughts and emotions just like everyone else who just happens to think outside of the box. Disney should have dropped this on ABC or Freerform. The creators would have had more freedom to make the characters more realistic/grown up. Riley basically NEVER loses the mindset of a 12 year old girl throughout the entire shows run, and that kills any potential for her character to be interesting. I actually liked this show, in an odd way; yes, it’s overdramatic and just overwhelming sometimes. They made a big deal out of everything. That’s what I liked about it. I knew it wasn’t real, but after watching that chaos, reality didn’t seem so… ridiculously intense after all, and that was a quite good realization for a teenager. It was entertaining (of course, when it wasn’t being painful) to watch and laugh at this, and, when I was not cringing, I could try to get the point of what they were meaning to say.

I like how dramatic and over the top it was because I remember that's how I felt everything was when I was that age. Everything was do or die. Also there was that episode where Riley just completely gives up who she is cuz she found a group of people who thought she was awesome if she just pretended to be someone else and she completely falls in to that person and I totally get it. When I was that age I did the same thing because I didn't want to feel like I didn't outsider. So people being like no as an adult I know that's ridiculous I'm like okay but at that age did you?

I watched Giirl meets World before I watched Boy Meets World. I knew it was cringe but they also touched upon storylines other disney shows didn't include at that time. I watched it more for Maya's storyline. But Disney destroyed what Girl Meets World could have been. It could have been a proper dramedy with mature storylines and real character arcs without a random childish comment every 1 minute. Still, for what it's worth Girl Meets World taught me a lot as well.

I'm a huge Boy Meets World. So while I do find some guest stars episodes with the BMW cast okay, the ones with Eric and especially Angela kind of disappointed me the most. Girl Meets World writers took that Mr. Squirrel dream episode from BMW too seriously and actually made that storyline canon about Eric when they introduced him in the show, which I thought it was a weird and dumb way to do so. He later got better though... Now as for Shawn and Angela.... I also don't like how how GMW did Shawn and Angela's relationship dirty, Boy Meets World's famous interracial couple at that too. The show vilified Angela and made it seem like she completely dumped Shawn and wanted nothing to do with him anymore. But the writers of GMW seem to forget how Shangela actually had a mutual breakup in the original show. In the original show, Angela had to move oversees to live with her dad in the military and both Shawn and Angela realized that they can't make a long-distance relationship work. GMW also had Shawn moping about Angela for the past 15 years until he eventually becomes Maya's stepfather. Yep. They broke them up so that Shawn can end up with Maya's mom.

Whew. Thank you for this comment, so I know I can give this show a full pass. GMW gave them a shot to fix the mistake they made with Shawn and Angela by establishing that they got back together soon after the end of BMW (she was just gone for a year or so), they got happily married and had beautiful biracial kids, after everything they had gone through they deserved that, but instead they chose to make it all worse crushing the ship even more by vilifying Angela and making get married to someone else even though Shawn was her true love, just so they could match-make him with Kate. I mean if they wanted he and Kate to be together so badly then why couldn’t they just start the show with the two of them together and why couldn’t he be Maya’s biological father? I heard once that at first Maya was supposed to be Shawn and Angela’s biracial daughter but they changed the plans when they decided they wanted Sabrina Carpenter to play Maya (she was a promise) and she obviously couldn’t play a biracial character so they wrote her as Kate’s daughter instead

When doing a reboot or remake, you need to answer two questions: what about the original made it work so well? Whatever the answer is, you need to keep that. Second question: what new stories does it have to tell? I'll take a parallel universe version of the characters if they just don't try to tell me shot for shot a story that the original already told well.

The big difference between the shows comes from the fact that they aired on different Networks which means the production and writing was entirely different. Boy Meets World and its 7 seasons all aired originally on ABC not Disney Channel (Disney picked up ABC in the middle of the shows run and Disney only ran reruns). This allowed the writers and producers to create a great show that was for preteens and teenagers that dealt with serious issues, as well as some light hearted stuff. Meanwhile Girl Meets World was produced by Disney. Disney has shown that when it comes to producing their own original shows, they do pretty well, however, when they’re producing and writing remakes of something else they do poorly. Girls Meets World was an okay show but it could never stand up to its predecessor. Disney didn’t really understand what made Boy Meets World special. Everything for the most part in Boy Meets world feels natural. The lessons they learned and experiences they went through felt genuine. Meanwhile in Girl Meets World almost everything is given to them and almost nothing is ever earned. For example look at the teaching styles from Mr. Feeny and Corey as teachers. Mr. Feeny would try his best to teach Cory, and Eric for different reasons. Cory was being a bad student on purpose for the sake of Shawn at times (not wanting him to feel left out) and his own developed laziness because of this. Feeny new Corey was smart if he just tried instead of wanting to fit-in. Feeny would try understanding and tough love with Eric because he knew Eric’s laziness was out of fear of not making it in the real world. He knew Eric could be great but only if Eric let go of his fear and stop making excuses for himself. Mr. Feeny was genuinely trying to help but not overstep his boundaries. Once Cory becomes a teacher, he pretty much force-feeds whatever lessons about life he can into the lesson plan for his history class. It’s gets to a point where his own students call it out. That made it seem like Disney was making fun of Mr. Feeny as if he did the same thing. This shows that the Disney producers never understood the original show. That’s why they should have just left it alone or have it Produced on FreeForm
@wardarcade7452
@wardarcade7452 Год назад

Farkle was an annoying character up until season 3, it actually went in depth into his personality and made his humor so much more tolerable and actually much better, the second season was also pretty good as the beginning to his character arc, in the episode where they are handing out the yearbooks and all, he realizes that his awkwardness isn’t appreciated by anyone besides his friends, so he changes his outward image and personality to match what he believes a “regular guy” would be, but at the end, while everyone is trying to convince him to go back to the way he was, he learns that while he should still stay true to himself, it was always kind of his own voice that was telling him to grow and mature, especially since high school is right around the corner, meaning that he would be reaching a point in his life where he should act more mature and adult-like. Season 2 and 3 also touched on the topic of bullying and why it’s important to tell somebody, it’s wasn’t the cliche “bullying isn’t ok” lesson every other show has, it took a more mature approach and instead said “Hiding your feelings will never be a good way to cope with bullying, it’s better to tell someone about it”. Not to mention the fact that the guy being rude to Farkle wasn’t doing the cliche “haha loser” line that causes every Disney character to miraculously break down In tears 😐, he was personally attacking him out of jealousy. Now this is still cringey on its own, but had good intent, where as Farkle’s entire personality in the first season is literally “😀” and his weird obsession with Riley and Maya. Season 3 also allowed him to move away from Riley and Maya and focus on his relationship with another. Season 3 also did a really good job with the humor, I swear the first episodes were both sad, wholesome, and hilarious all at the same time. I gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting part of his humor to end up being him falling off a chandelier 😂

What was worse was they kept shoving down the viewers' throats that Riley was supposedly a sweet saint despite the fact that she was depicted as an entitled, spoiled, bossy, meddling and somewhat mean person (and retrotrashed and/or dumped on virtually all the BMW characters depicted). I remember catching a small part of an episode of this show while flipping channels (which was a thing people used to do). A teacher was in danger of getting fired by the principal for letting the kids read comic books instead of the assigned book for class. They were giving over dramatic, cringey dialogue about the wonderful things they can read about in comics and how they touch on real issues and stuff. Which is partly true but it made me think of the episode of Boy Meets World where Corey teaches for a week and tries to get the class to read/care about The Diary of Anne Frank. Comic books are fine. Maybe have them read Maus or something. But Having an episode about "Superman said racism is bad and that's why I should be able to read it for lit class" after Boy Meets World had an episode about Anne Frank really weakens your argument. This isn't an insult to comics. There is genuine value in comic. I read comics and manga all the time. I also read actual books all the time. So should you and so should children. Maybe they reached a nuanced agreement at the end I don't know as I couldn't stand to watch it long enough to find out. But for the brief portion I saw. I was on the principal's side

I used to really like the show, but it suffers from having way more interesting side characters than the main character. Maya, Farkle, Lucas, Josh, Shawn and even Zay all have way more interesting stories to tell. Instead Riley takes the focus and doesn’t really ever evolve or change like the rest. Her problems never match the level of the other characters problems. Plus the never ending triangle took a lot of wind out of it. They covered really deep topics well, but also treated simple problems as earth shattering revelations. The series had a good (albeit rushed) conclusion but it deserved to be renewed. At least Boy meets World is always there and covers similar topics. There were great episodes. Some of my favorites were the episodes with Shawn, or addressing the age difference with Maya and Josh, or seeing the evolution of the friendship between the guys especially Farkle and Zay. The episode on ancestry was probably my favorite in the whole series.

I'm a diehard Boy Meets World fan and have rewatched the full series within the last year, also finding new appreciation for it as an adult (Even though they didn't give Amy as much character development as Alan. I guess it's because the show was centered around Cory vs Morgan.). Granted, I wasn't the demographic for Girl Meets World but did try to watch at least the episodes the BMW cast were prevalent in. But GMW is so, so hard to watch for reasons Alex states and like a bazillion more. BMW dealt with so many issues in a sincere way that most youth-oriented TV shows ignore or shy away from, like drug abuse, racism, child abuse, sexism, etc. The characters, stories, cast chemistry and risks that BMW took make it hold up today. Nothing felt forced or said just for laughs (Maybe a little bit in the beginning, but it didn't feel super overdone). I felt like I was watching and growing up with a show about kids to adults that I could have been friends with the whole time. And the messages and dynamics left an impact on me. In GMW's defense, they were held to the Disney Channel's hard standards. Had the characters and stories been given the similar treatment as BMW, it could have been really great, and I hope it did make some sort of positive impact on its younger audience members like BMW did with me. But maybe, kids should skip GMW and just check out BMW instead.

Seems like their shows are now just filtered with cheap cheesy jokes that you only think to laugh at because of the forced laugh track that plays every 10 seconds and no real substance that can challenge views and teach sometimes hard life lessons. Yeah I agree, I think GMW could have tackled some of the new issues that faced children and the existing ones tackled in BMW. Unfortunately Disney just couldn't get that deep and I think that's why it just doesn't compare. Girl Meets World was the most moral heavy show on Disney, so that says something about how they "teach" audiences. It's such a shame that Disney held the show back from what it could have been.

I think there are some things kids can learn from GMW.

When I was a kid I always used to cringe at the ham-fisted life lessons that they recapped in the classrooms I think it was? Idk, that always stuck with me for some reason

The dialogue in girl meets world feels like a bad artistic expression of absurdism

Okay, can we just discuss how Alex finally popped off? Like some of the reboots are okay, but some of them are like, really bad. Girl Meets World's existence pissed him off so bad that he didn't even go over one episode, he just went over everything he didn't like about it as a whole. It was a nice change of pace I wish all of his videos were like this.

Agreed. I've been thinking this for awhile. I'd like to see more like this episode where he goes over multiple episodes.
