GIRL SCOUT COOKIES - Life in America 

I remember selling cookies in the 1960’s was hard. I made the mistake of selling at rentals and the people moved out by the time the cookies came in. My daughter had a bonanza of cookie sales in the 80’s. I brought her order form to my work. She sold 250 boxes! I was a cookie mom so I was delivering cookies for days! Now, we buy from the neighborhood Girl Scouts.

I miss the girl scouts going from door to door to sell cookies. When i was a kid in the 70's, when they would knock on our door, my mom would buy 1 box of each flavor. Sometimes, she would buy an extra box and one year, she bought my favorites(do-si-dos and samoas). Even now, when i go to the grocery store and the girl scouts and their families are in the front, i'll buy a few boxes.

My second grade granddaughter just wore my third grade Brownie uniform to school 50 years later . I don't remember selling cookies but we made sit-upons. And the song I remember...I've got something in my pocket...

I'm proud of our troop! In the late 70's there were only 7 of us but yet we had the number 2 sales and we were in a first tier suburb right next to Minneapolis . We did this 3 years in a row. We were amazing!

The funniest time I was purchasing some from my niece when she was about nine is how I was looking over the selection and I asked her about a certain one on the list and she remarks ".... well, I don't really care for those myself....!" And I laughed and told her a more subtle sales tactic! Hahaha! These days I make a point to never actually buy them from a parent or other family member that brings a sales sign up sheet to work, but rather to always make the effort to get the cookies from the girls that go out there with their moms and friends and sell them in locations around town! Makes me feel more like I have a duty to be supportive to the personal effort!!

I love your videos. They are exactly accurate about the subject that you’re speaking about. Not just by the information but also of the nostalgic memories. My favorite cookie is the Trefoil or shortbread. I remember in the 70’s they were sprinkled with course sugar.

I remember selling Girl Scout cookies with my mom in 1967, since I was in the brownies. We bought our fair share of Girl Scout cookies as well! We always bought my favourite the mint, peanut butter and shortbread cookies! Never lasted long in our house! Lol!

I was a Girl Scout in St. Helena, California. The heart ❤ of the Napa Valley.... We sold our cookies at wineries 🍷... met people from all over the world touring the Napa Valley.. Awesome experience.. I also earned my Sliver and Gold Award from Girl Scouts too... loved every moment of it for 12 years ❤ ! #troop270

Love the chocolate thin mints. Always need to get at least one box a year. Shortbread is another favorite in our house, among others.

I start by asking the girls which cookies they like. After they tell me I buy a box of each along with a box of Tag-Alongs. Then I give the girls the cookies they picked out with the caveat that they have to share them with their sibling's or friends. A simple way to reward them for getting out there and doing the work.

My sister was in girl scouts in the mid 60's. She was 11 at the time and I was 12. When it came time for her to sell her cookies we had boxes of them on the kitchen table. They were so tempting I thought if I took just one box nobody would notice. I took one and hid it my room and it was quickly devoured. But my mom noticed one was gone and I got disciplined. To this day if I see the scouts selling outside a store I will always buy a couple boxes.

This is my 15th year volunteering at all 15 inpatient Wards at Naval Support Activity Bethesda home of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Thanks to many Gurl Scout Troops I get to bring Gurl Scout Cookies for the inpatients, their families, the nurses, lona, techs and staff :) God Bless Gurl Scout Troops across the USA :)

My 2 daughters were girl scouts and I always took orders for cookies from my coworkers. They are both grown now oh how time flies

I really appreciate this great little history of Girl Scout cookie sales! Our Brownie troop is already making the rounds. My favorite is also Tagalongs, but Thin Mints are always the bestseller.

Shortbread has always been my favorite.

Our family was the distribution point for cookies one year for my sister's troop. The boxes were stacked half way to the ceiling in piles of different flavors. It was all very tempting!

I was a Troop leader and my daughter was a Brownie and Junior Girl Scout. I loved those days. My daughter was able to sell a lot of cookies during her time as a Girl Scout because my husband and I worked in large manufacturing factories, not to mention my Mother would also help sell. Brings back so many wonderful memories of camping, outings, meetings and just doing community service. I haven't had a Girl Scout cookie in about 10-15 years or so. I remember they were about $3.00 per box. I guess my favorite are Trefoils and Lemon cookies.

I was a CampFire Girl and we sold differnt kinds of nuts.I did love their thin mints.When i was a 2nd grade teacher I would get hit up fpr at least a dozen boxes from all my present and past students.

People also don’t realize there’s also 2 different manufacturers that make these cookies as well, one manufacturer serves one side of the country, while the other manufacturer serves the other half of the country. ABC Baker’s are the best and are made with better quality ingredients, and those cookies are under their given name. The other manufacturer they are not so, be careful when, ordering online because, now they got this new packaging that says ABC 1-2-3 and those cookies look like they are made by the manufacturer that makes them different and doesn’t have their given name, just basic cookie names like the other manufacturer that makes them with not so quality ingredients. For example a Do Si Dos will just say peanut butter sandwich cookies which doesn’t have the oatmeal in cookie that ABC Bakers use to sandwich the peanut butter with, it’s made like the other manufacturer, it’s like where’s the oatmeal and that crispy crunch.

Oh yes, my favorites for many years were the Thin Mints (I'd buy them a half dozen boxes at a time "in season") but for the last couple decades, my tastes have changed to the TagAlongs like yourself. My favorite is Tag-a-longs too!! I had a rather large paper route from 79 to 85. Being 2 years older than my sister I had her follow me on my route and sell cookies to my customers. She was always one of the leading sellers.

I remember having girl scout cookies for snacks for many years. I liked tag alongs, chocolate mint,and other girl scout cookies too.

my youngest daughter sold the most Girl Scout Cookies for the year 2000 in the Utah Council. I'm still proud of her for that achievement.

I was a Girl Guide in Canada. I can remember going door-to-door selling the chocolate sandwich cookies or the vanilla sandwich cookies. Those were the only options. Then… they came out with the “combination” box (1 row of each flavor). I, personally, thought that was a bad idea (when I could have sold 2 boxes, I was only selling 1!) Now, I’m a Girl Scout mom/leader in America. We use the other bakers (ABC) So, our Tagalongs are called Peanut Butter Patties. They are amongst my favorites. My daughter started out as a brownie and worked her way all the way up to gold I don't know how many times we were cookie chairman and had cookies left over from the year before when it was time to order again. My favorite is the Samoas

Every year i get ambushed by girl scouts in front of grocery stores, i buy 2 sometimes 3 boxes of Shortbread and Thin Mint cookies. 🍀

They used to have Scot-Teas and Savannahs. I loved those. I love Tagalongs and Do-Si-Does. Samoas are delicious and my kids love those. And we all love Thin Mints. My mom always loved the Thin Mints. I was a Girl Scout all through high school and then my daughters were! My favorite memory is freezing the mint cookies and then eating them with a cup of hot tea with my grandmother, we had our own little tea parties! Great memories!!!!

I sold Girl Scout cookies in the 1960's when you took orders and the people paid when you delivered them. One year I sold some to an elderly neighbor who passed away before the delivery. Her daughter was more than gracious when she paid for them and accepted the delivery. There were contests back then and prizes for the scout who sold the most. I think the coveted prize was a bicycle. I never sold enough for a prize. As an adult I have bought cookies from Girl Scouts every year and will be putting in an order soon with a daughter of a friend. The thin mints have always been my favorite. I will buy several boxes and freeze some. They still taste great when thawed out!

I loved selling girl scout cookies I still remember carring the card bird boxes with handles with boxes of cookies in them and I sold a lot of cases of cookies. My favorite is the thin mints.

I remember selling cookies door to door in the 80s. I didn't really like the cookies even back then. Thin Mints were the best they had, but I never bought much of what I was selling. Now, looking at the ingredients, I'm glad I didn't. That being said, I loved being a Girl Scout and have great memories of earning patches, our Olympics, and whatever those international conventions were called. It was a really fun organization! I still have my uniform in storage!

I remember selling the cookies when I was a Brownie/Girl Scout. My mom would take the order form to her bowling league and sell tons of boxes. Now I buy them from the troops that set up shop outside the local supermarkets. My favorites are the Samoas & Tagalongs. My mom loved putting the Thin Mints in the freezer and eating them cold.

Thin mints for the win. I try to get a few boxes every year. It was easy to do when so many co-workers brought in order forms.

A wonderful gentleman at my workplace bought ALL his granddaughter's GS cookies and came in the next day, happily tossing boxes of cookies to anyone who walked into the break room. Grandpa (and coworker) of the year!

As a former Cub Scout, I always support the Girl Scouts by buying their cookies. I love the Do-si-does peanut butter cookies.

It is interesting to note, based upon your presentation, that cookie sales increased during the height of the Great Depression.

Back in the 80's my oldest daughter was a Brownie then a Girl Scout. I was a co-leader of her troop for several years. Cookie sales was always looked forward to and the girls were excited because part of the proceeds went to our troop and we'd plan something fun to do for the girls. One year we decided to use the money they made to go see David Copperfield. So many fun memories from Girl Scouting days.

My favorite Girl Scout cookies are the shortbread cookies & those extremely tantalizing & taste-tempting Thin Mints. Yummy!!!

I was in Girl Scouts when I was a kid from 1977 to 1985. I was in it for 7 years. Even my sister was in it but, she quit when she was 9 years old. My mother was in it for a year when she was younger, too.

I used to buy them way back when they were 50 cents a box. They actually did help the troops. And they tasted delicious. Now at 6 dollars a box, the ingredients are terrible with all kinds of preservatives for warehouse storage. The majority of the money goes to the upper management of the Girl Scouts. Just like a lot of other things time and greed has ruined a lot of kids organizations being run by parents instead of kids selling them.

My mother has a thin mint obsession. She'd buy up to a dozen boxes, and God help you if you messed with her private stash.

Unfortunately, as a former scout leader, I can tell you that the amount of money that is returned to the troop itself is minimal, the majority of it goes to the National Guild to pay the national leaders.

In the early 1980s there was a cute blonde girl on the green box of "Thin Mints." I stared at it all day LOL

Scouting was so virtuous then. Today, the cookies contain nothing but fake, cancer-causing ingredients including high fructose corn syrup and soy fillers. Back in the day, honesty and good ingredients were used. Sorry, but I haven't bought these poisonous chips since 1992. A straight donation would be a lot smarter. Thank you for the memories! First, I trust no one whose favourite cookie is not Thin Mints. I still buy cookies every year because I was a brownie and a girl scout in the 60's and 70's. At that time, at least where I lived, parents never helped to sell cookies by soliciting orders at offices. We didn't have stands either. It was a great education in marketing and hard work.

I sold them in the mid 1950’s. We had trefoils and thin mints, the latter being my personal favorites. We thought nothing of going door to door, to total strangers, in pairs, but no parents accompanying us or waiting in the car! We walked or rode bikes, and this was in Queens, NY. I believe we were about 10 years old, to belong to Jr. Girl Scouts. Which parent would allow their 10 year old daughters to go anywhere unaccompanied in 2022?

I was a cookie mom a few times. The number of cookie boxes sold one year took 2 truck loads one year!

I loved my Mom buying these from door to door neighbor girls when I was a young boy in the 60s. Thin Mints a fave. I lost favor with Girl Scout cookies when Moms and yes some Dads brought the order form to where I worked when I got my first real job as an out of college professional in 1980. My God, multiple Moms and Dads bombarding you. Where did teaching kids to do it on their own go? LOL

The local Girl Scouts always smile when they see me coming knowing about a hundred dollars will be spent at the table!! My coworkers enjoy the cookies!

Before I was diagnosed a diabetic, I would sit and wolf down a entire box of Samoas in 5 minutes flat !

I will never forget the year me and my brother sold 500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. For 250 boxes of cookies my troop was awarding bikes to ride. So my parents drove us to bowling alleys and even bars they frequented to sell the cookies…. We reached out goal of 500 boxes so I was awarded 2 bikes. (My brother and I were so close that it was unthinkable that I got a bike and he didn’t) I also was awarded a badge for the most boxes sold. 😁

I’ve always supported the Girl Scouts. My favorite hands down are Samoas. True they have gotten more expensive but it’s a great cause- I order multiple boxes every year from co-workers daughters.

When I first sold cookies they were 50 cents a box and the boxes were bigger than they are now.

I lived in a relatively small town in southern CT during the late 1950s and sold Girl Scout Cookies door-to-door. I remember that we were cautioned to never knock on a stranger's door, a rule that was lost on me since almost everyone was a stranger. Not only did we move house frequently, but I also have facial recognition blindness.

I always buy a box of each & 2 of the Thin Mints. Time to run down to King Soopers & see if they have set up shop yet!

One of the things that irks me about the cookie sales is that the majority of the money from the sales don’t go to the troop, most go to The Girl Scout Council in NYC. The girls work so hard for very little return. I was a Scout from 1968-1974 I wanted to be a Scout longer but when we moved to Chester County Pennsylvania there wasn’t any room for me in any of the troops so I had to quit. Many years later I moved to The Eastern Shore of Maryland and I went to the local council and volunteered to be a leader,our little troop started out as Daisies then Brownies but disbanded after one year as Juniors.

A co-worker had a daughter in GS and every year he hit up everyone to buy a box (or two, or three). One year another co-worker held out and the guy went to him everyday urging him to buy a box. Finally, after about 10 days of this I said in front of the father "Just buy a box of those stale cookies and Jack will leave you alone". The guy bought box and Jack left him alone after that. :)

In 1971 I was a blue bird. We never sold Girl Scout cookies, but instead we sold Camp Fire mints. I remember going door to door selling them. I liked the chocolate mint GS cookie but for various reasons I stopped buying them.

How does online sales to a central location help young girls learn about customers and business?

I don't purchase girl scout cookies unless the girls are fully uniformed. If they can't respect the organization their in, then I can't do business with them. Instead of ignoring them I quietly inform the leader as to why I declined purchasing. If a group is fully outfitted except a few, I have donated to aid in uniform completion. This also used to go with boy scouts and most any other group like churchs teaching the young. Sadly I only get hostile disrespect anymore so my efforts are invaine. It's the way the cookie crumbles with me.

My favorite was thin-mints. But now......?

When I was a little girl they had a cookie that looked like a daisy, It was a sandwich cookie with a cookie and fudge filling which peeked out through a hole in the center of the daisy shape making it look like a daisy. We were unable to get them by the time I was in fourth grade. Don't know if it had been discontinued or just not available in my region. Either way they haven't had them for decades and decades.
