As a scientist (and a biologist at that!) I’m genuinely offended someone would attempt to use biology to be transphobic. Biology is wonderful and can be very helpful for hormone therapy, stop dragging biology into this, science shouldn’t be used for hate.
Ikr? Its funny because in biology, there are instances where an animal can change their gender naturally, or they don't have a gender at all. Transphobes lack understanding of science fr
Quoting biology to justify bigotry (even if we assume they're right) is also just silly. I for one don't base my moral judgements off science, unless I'm 100% willing to change my mind when and if the science changes. It's very simple, regardless of what relevant biology may or may not say on the topic, all people deserve to be treated with respect, all people deserve to be who they are and feel comfortable with who they are. Treating others with basic human respect trumps whatever science may say on the subject. Science can only tell us what is likely to be, it cannot make any kind of value judgement.
I'm an old dude, so I think of them as my trans nephew and his bi fiancee. I do, though - I feel warm and cuddly and oddly proprietary about them both, and if I met them in person, I'd want so much to hug them, and I'd be hard pressed to pause and ask permission first.
"Pick up a biology book"... and then learn that there are at least 6 verified genetic sexes in humans... and also that sex and gender are not the same thing... then pick up a sociology book to learn about gender... then a psychology book to learn about the reason we identify as various genders...
Hate is 100% born from jealousy and no one can convince me otherwise.... bc why be hateful and mean? People who have nothing to be jealous of aren’t mean people. So yeah, the haters are definitely jealous
I am 70 years old and I am so glad you have each other! Love is love and love is beautiful! I have absolutely no problem with the transgender community. Wishing you both the best...always!!!
Sorry, you're just a figment of someone's imagination But foreal though, I'd like them to explain your existence with their flawed logic. I'll bring the popcorn
Hi Miya. Totally agree with you. I am usually a bit wary of ascribing motives to people but in this context I am pretty convinced that people who make such inane comments are deeply insecure about their own relationship to sexuality and gender. I just don't see why being a person some of whose biology is shared by a certain percentile of the population is of any importance beyond showing us the wonderful variety of life.
@@weevilwizarddotmusic9711 i meant more a book on genetics for example (as there is more than only XX and XY, just to start with) or the print version of the icd.
When people write comments like "why is your nose so big" what do they even expect to get as an answer? "My nose is this big because i feed it vegetables every day" ??
"this is NO way to treat a girl on your channel! I come into your home, I disrespect your nose- and you leave" I cannot switch Shaaba. That's probably the best quote I have from her to date
Hi, I’m a transman whose a stage manager. Stage right and stage left are from the actors perspective looking towards the auditorium. Up stage is furthest away from the audience. You can also use prompt side for stage left ( where the DSM sits) and opposite prompt side for stage right.
@@alexlike3037 good luck on your exam! Oh if they ask what a bastard prompt is (don’t think they will) it’s where the DSM desk in on stage right instead of stage left
The best comeback to the whole "it's basic biology" I've seen is something along the lines of "well, I'm sorry you never got to advanced biology". I've heard that high school biology is so simplified that is often wrong and it honestly makes sense.
Biologist here - yes high school biology is very simplified. It's not necessarily wrong, but it's more black and white without addressing all the nuance. And biology textbooks explain that XX=reproductively female (usually), and XY=reproductively male (usually). That's just for humans, because chromosomes get real crazy depending on the species. And even with humans, XX and XY are not the only combination of chromosomes. But chromosomes ultimately don't really matter because GENDER IDENTITY IS NOT THE SAME AS CHROMOSOMES. There is absolutely zero biological evidence to back up the idea that someone who is XX absolutely must be a woman, and someone with XY absolutely must be a man. All the chromosomes mean is your body forms a certain way. But gender is SO much more complicated than that.
@@andien8760 At least in my AP bio class they brought up how different species can have funky chromosomes- like chickens! They have X, Y, and Z chromosomes! Though not all in the same chicken if I recall correctly.
It's strange because I always use the basic biology argument against transphobes because biological sex and gender identity are different and I thought most people learn that in school
@@niamhs6042 I think people are starting to learn that in school, but only in the last few years. I don't remember learning that when I was in high school, ~8 years ago. And of course religious/conservative schools are still going to avoid that at all costs.
Ironically i just passed my anatomy and fysiology course on university and our books description on gender and "biological sex" was just brilliant! It even made me aware of the more proper and scientifically correct term for "biological sex", which is also more trans inclucive; "fenotypical sex"! Because you can't tell someones chromosomes by looking at them, even if a baby is born with female genitalia, looks and acts like a female, identifies as female, grows up and goes through female puperty, she might have male chromosomes, but is immune to testosterone, which makes her appear as phenotypical female. Biology and gender is never black and white no matter how much transphobes likes to think it is!
what’s funny is that i have a transphobic mum who knows about this and the sry gene and how it doesn’t express itself in all genotypical males but still refuses to believe in the existence of trans people
Was expecting him to pick up his own research paper And be like "oh look not only does the research show trans people exist, but I do research too" You're telling a scientist that science says they don't exist, when they already used their science to say the opposite
I don't see how anyone hates y'all lol. This is one of the four channels I started following as a transphobe wanting to see if I should... you know, not be a transphobe. And it worked, I am no longer a transphobe and this is one of my favorite channels now. Plus, I can now have arguments with other transphobes to hopefully bring them over to my side, because of the things you (and other channels) have taught me. Also, I am bi too so I enjoy the bi content. Thank you for making these! 💜
I have so much respect for you for having the courage and strength to step outside your bubble and reason yourself into a more accepting mindset. Changing one’s own mind is one of the hardest things to do in life, and anyone who succeeds at it deserves love and applause.
Much respect and support to you for trying and succeeding to change your views, we need more people in this world like you! You've accomplished something so difficult and so meaningful, thank you for trying to be the most inclusive and supportive person you can be and advocating for others.
Jamie - Your channel has been a great help to me - I am a hetero cis woman who is 60, and we have a lovely trans man living with us. Your videos have helped me immensely to understand his journey. Thank you - keep it up!!
Transphobia is made from the words Trans, and Phobia. Phobia means an irrational fear of x. Transphobia isn't a hate of trans people, it's fear. Transphobes fear things they don't understand. They don't understand trans people. By their logic, if they don't understand something, then it's wrong. They don't like the fact that people know more than they do. They are afraid of not knowing.
Jamie needs to get a biology textbook so that he can just pick it up in all of his transphobia videos and look at the camera like, "Here." Even better if it's an actively trans-affirming textbook.
I was expecting to be so impressed that he just has biology books on hand, just because; just to shut, at least, that method of transphobia down...and then he walked back into view with his "biology book". My disappointment was immeasurable and my day is ruined. 😭
I love how chill this relationship is. They don’t focus on the hate in the comments, they simply have fun together, then go on their merry way. I wish more people were like this. I’m new to this channel and I’m loving every video:)
God, I wish I could just choose my gender and then feel that way. At least then I wouldn't have to be stuck in this weird "desperately wanting some effects from T, but desperately not wanting others"-state, because it is very stressful
Omg congrats! I came out to my friend the other day (first person I told) and I'm so happy so ye I totally understand the joy! Hope u have a great day!!!!
Btw guys, it's stage left to the person on stage - their left. When giving stage directions, it meant to refer to the actor's point of view. I know no one asked for this explanation, but i needed to give it. Love y'all! :)
My mother is a director, actor, and producer... her favorite sweatshirt she wears while directing rehearsals has this on it: ☜STAGE LEFT | STAGE RIGHT ☞ So the actors know which is which when looking at her in the audience. As a stage manager, I spend the first part of rehearsal thinking in "house right" and "house left," then switch once we move on to the stage.
a lot of other biologists have said the same but I'm a professional biochemist and would like to reiterate how laughable it is that anyone would try to say that transphobia has scientific basis. 95% of my job is just being perpetually floored by the extent to which we don't know shit about biology. Life is so mind-bindingly complex and full of surprises, and we barely understand any of it. Two rigid genders defined by any biological factor makes zero sense in the context of how complex and messy biology is
I genuinely love how Shaaba's brain works. I know this sounds weird, but just the random goodheartedness that she exudes is so charming. You two are very cute together.
@@anonymouslucario285 I have a lot of internalised transphobia, when I realised I was trans I thought I would never be loved, that I wasn't man enough. but I have a very loving boyfriend now, who is amazing and loves me for me
I mean, there is some truth to it. In a way, every youtuber is playing a character. The Jamie we know is a collaborative effort between the actual Jamie and us viewers. There will always be parts of the real Jamie we don't see, and that's how it should be. That doesn't mean youtube Jamie isn't real or relatable or great--just that there ought to be a healthy distance on the side of viewers. Parasocial relationships are not good things to have in your life; they can often be destructive to the viewers and all you have to do is watch one "I'm burned out" video from any youtuber to see it can be damaging to the creator as well.
I am a university student taking a biology class. I have read several biology textbooks and they do not invalidate trans people. Maybe transphobes should actually read the biology textbooks they discuss so much.
No matter what is said to you or others, anyone reading this, my brothers, sisters, and friends They're the ones having their days ruined by a rainbow.
really sucks that your mom would say something like that... my roomates mom told him that hed be unlovable if he transitioned, but hes been on t for a while and is currently in a loving relationship so idk where shes getting her information from. im sure youll be able to find somebody
Transphobes: XX and XY chromosomes! It’s basic biology! Pick up a biology book! You’re right. XX and XY chromosomes IS basic biology. But here’s the thing, you can’t learn something like playing the guitar, for example, if you only learn the basics. There’s an advanced biology behind and about biological sex that proves and validates trans people. Transphobes, pick up a biology book.
In the end of last year I came out to my boyfriend of by now 7 years as asexual. He first was very skeptical about the whole thing and the lgbtqia+ community and it was a learning process for both of us. He was one of the people who complained loudly about official forms having "divers" as a gender option and by now we are both out there openly members/allies of the alphabet mafia and teaching others about it as well. Your channel was such a great addition and help for the the "transition" and we always watch your videos together ♥️🏳️🌈 keep doing you Jamie and marry this gorgeous woman♥️
My boyfriend of 8 years was finally (after 5 years) comfortable enough to come out as bi to me and our friends. Idk what kind of reaction he was hoping for but it wasn't the coming out party we all had for him haha
Transphobes: Pick up a biology book Me: picks up nearest biology book. Hey this book talks about fish who can change their body composition from male to female; It talks about how birds form gay couples and adopt eggs or chick that are left behind; and it talks about birds that never go out to find a mate but rather help their parents raise the next generation. This biology book validates Lesbians Gays Bisexuals Transgenders and Asexuals and Aromantics (Sorry Intersex peeps, I need my other book to validate you). Glad you made me pick up a book. For anyone interested: Essentials of animal behaviour by P.J.B. Slater Campbell Biology by J. Reece et all.
Disclaimer: This is not meant to be offencive. As a person with a small nose I can say that it is alot harder to keep your glasses up on a small nose. Half of the time my glasses are directly on top of my nose ring.
Hi Jamie and friends. I’m not sure if you still read the comments that are this old but I just wanted to tell you that Florida passed a law saying that transgender people in Florida (obviously) schools are not allowed to play for the sports teams that suit their correct gender, and only they can only play for their ASAB’s teams. We’ve seen that discrimination before, but it gets so much worse. Now, if someone’s gender is “disputed” in a school, the staff is allowed to CHECK THEIR GENITALS to see what their ASAB is. This is going to bring on so much trauma for trans people, and even just people whose gender is worth “dispute”. And these are people in school. Children. I am asking you to please raise awareness about this, because I am genuinely scared for everyone who could be affected. -Much love, a worried ally
Bruh, imagine being so concerned about what’s in a child’s pants that you’re willing to traumatize them in order to find out. That’s actually disgusting.
@@32669ndll Sweet potato tastes a bit like a cooked carrot with a sprinkle of sugar on top and the texture of a regular potato. They’re tasty and nutritious!
His girlfriend is pretty! I love her She was extremely supportive during his transition process from the start! And honestly from everything of her I've seen you two deserve eachother You two are so fricking wholesome and funny *Also you two are really attractive xD*
As a theatre kid, I can confirm that stage left means looking out into the audience (from the actor’s point of view) so you were right the first time Jaimie!
I never understood the "pick up a biology book" if people are talking about gender. Biology books are basically about the hardware of the body and everything else nature, not about what is in human or animal minds. Even in my Neuroscience (Science about nerves and the brain) books I never encountered the topic gender, since we are not sure about what causes feeling as a specific gender.
I don’t mean to be rude. But I’m Aromantic. So instead of, a romantic relationship. my best friend Dominique, who is like a sister to me. And I have a platonic relationship, that is similar to them.
You were clean before you came out. You are valid and real and hold intrinsic value that cannot be influenced by others -- even someone saying good things. You are whole and lovely and I support you.
I don't know why but I feel like the comments about his appearance would probably hurt me more than 'the trans people don't exist' thing lol because I'm used to being erased (being nonbinary) and can just dismiss that as ignorance but how dArE you say you don't like my hair lmao. Loved the video!
1999 somewhere in Europe, 5th year of Medical school, lecture about "gender dysphoria & transgender people", i still rembember the introduction of the professor: "Gender has three components" - she said - biological: sex at birth - cerebral/mental: gender identity the person feels it is true to them - social: gender "role" within society the person feels it is conistent with their gender identity "The above need to be alligned for people to feel comfortable in their own selves and contrary to popular belief the biological component is the least important in terms of determining gender identity and the easiest to change. Therefore medicine should provide the tools that give people the opportunity to change their biological sex and achieve fulfilment and happiness" I know that the above excludes non-binary people but remember this was in 1999 and I believe we did not know much about them back then. Nevertheless that professor was extraordinary and she pushed for the care of transgender people to be free in public hospitals and for treatment to start mid-puberty. I bet you, that professor has "picked up many biology books" in her time. 😉
Hey everyone, I hope you are well. Have a great day and stay safe. Never forget that you are valid, loved and beautiful. I'm more than happy to help anyone who needs it and feel free to ask anything you want, I'm a parent to anyone who doesn't have a accepting one. Always be yourself and ignore the people who live to bring you down.
@DaRealBookworm that is so sad ;-; remember that you deserve to be loved and accepted for who you are. you are an amazing person and, whoever you love, whatever your gender identity is, you are valid. i hope things are gonna get better **virtual hugs**
As a biology teacher; anyone who tells you to pick up a biology book hasn't read anything beyond high school biology, and even then modern biology books tend to be more nuanced. Even disregarding the sex vs gender issue; the whole X/Y = male, X/X = female thing is only true for 98% of people. If you're a man with a low sperm count, chances are you're an X/X male, likewise there are X/Y females. Some people are born with 3 sex chromosomes, some have 2, but don't have standard male or female genitals. As a general rule of thumb anything you only have a high school level of understanding of: it's probably more complicated than you know.
11:01 Ugh- I've done that before and I agree, except it's even worse because you're likely to break it. Stepping on (most) legos won't break them but stepping on a plug could bend or snap the prongs and make it unusable!
I can just imagine the following interaction.. Transphobe: “tRaNs PeOpLe DoN’t ExIsT” Trans person: *slaps them hard* “then that shouldn’t hurt” Love your content 😊
First up, I’m not a transgender person, I am a cis ally. Second, trans women ARE real women! I was merely sharing an amusing imaginary situation regarding transphobes erasing trans peoples identity- would have written it in the context of bi- or other LGBTQ+- erasure too
I love how you turn the hate into something you can laugh off and be silly about, while the haters lead miserable and joyless lives. More power to you and keep smiling 😊
