How small the world is. I was there myself at the race day on Saturday, what an atmosphere! I have ridden various stages of the Giro over the last four years and was happy every time I completed individual stages. Before we drove up by Monte Grappa, we had a ride of 57km and 700m of climb, then we drove quickly, but still able to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere, to the top. It took us an hour and 50 minutes. I'm 1.93m and 98kg, my steel gravel bike weighs 12kg plus luggage, so it's all the more fascinating for me to see the professionals riding up the mountain after 19 stages at twice the speed of me. They are monsters!!! Greetings from Austria!

For sure. Try 310 or 305 at altitude. I'm living at 2000 meters and my threshold is 295. In three weeks, when I spend time at sea level, I'm suddenly going to be able to ride at 325 or 330 and hold it for 30 or 40 minute climbs or more. Conveniently for GC riders in tours, the altitude adaptation lasts for . . . right around 3 weeks. Good reason to sleep high and train low like Tadej is going to do between the Giro and the Tour

I live in California the most intense and highest climbing in America. Yes, Colorado has more, but you begin at 5000 to 8000 feet, we begin at sea level. One of my most favorite climbs is in the Trinity Alps CA, 8% grade for 10 miles, all wilderness, all paved, amazing this road exists. I may see one car on this road the entire time. I have never seen a cyclist on this road ever. Even though I am a bodybuilder and climbing at 200lbs@13%BFI on a 44 pound bike, I still enjoy the challenge, the slow climb means I can look around, and the quiet with no cars. I am a slow climber to be sure, but that doesn't take any of the fun out of it! ( I ride continually, never stopping up to 7 hours, I don't like stopping on ride and having to re-warm up )

Yes, racing has never been fair. Those born with the perfect genetics for long stage racing, will win over the most dedicated opponents. We all have to identify our body types and VO2 MAX, then train for a sport that meets those specifications. I was born as an extreme ectomorph; distance was always easy for me and so went into ultra-marathon cycle racing. No power and no strength, we work with what we have. But ultimately the genetic gifts at birth determine how you will perform against the world. IF only we were all born with equal gifts, then the winner would be the most dedicated and disciplined. But then we are all competing with different levels of immune system stress, that would also have to be equalized. Sports will never tell us who worked the hardest to win.

@@michaelgriffiths305 Take it easy. I was just trying to make Jeff feel better. But I would like to see Pog's sprint numbers just to see what kind of 10 second power he's got.

@@shepshape2585 I’m not having a go - there’s levels to it. That’s all. I actually agree with you Pog is more likely to be 1550 watts. I think 1600 is generous but who knows! Jonny Milan is 1700 similar to Marcel Kittel. They are road riders not track guys. What separates them from really good Cat 1 or elite amateurs is a) they are just a bit better (power similar but they’re lighter or with a better CDA b) they can do much closer to their 100% after 4-5 hours or two weeks!!!

3 mins? damn !! You definitely need some PEDs to get closer to the Pros.

There is a tiny caveat in that "estimation", just a small one... 🤦‍♂

Why even race, we can just calculate their watts/kg, and see who the winner is! 😆

on steep climbs though, you can guess with pretty good accuracy, assuming their nutrition, health and pacing is the same. but once you throw drafting into the mix, it's a totally different ballgame

Big no, there is so many tactics involved in cycling it just doesn't get down to a simple number. Maybe you don't know this because you haven't raced, otherwise you would know.

They're already beating some of the climbing records of the dopers. Do you think aerodynamics, nutrition, and training have advanced so much in the past 20 years to overcome the benefits of all of those drugs those guys were doing? Or do you think it's possible there is a new, undetectable super drug?
@CeeZee001
@CeeZee001 Месяц назад
The latter. But maybe some corruption going on. Or combination.

I always compare it to something like Formula 1: You have a tight set of rules. Stuff thats not in there is technically not cheating/illegal. Is it morally acceptable? Probably not. Do they care? Most certainly not.
@pmcmpc
@pmcmpc Месяц назад
How can you even ask the question? They're on every PED under the sun. Training has barely advanced, a lot of the pros cram themselves full of junk (see Pog & MvdP), and there aren't any aero gains on the climbs.

@@man1ac85That's not quite true of doping regulations - you can't use a newly discovered drug to gain a performance advantage, even if it's not on a list. The rules were written to cover new, undetected drug usage.

I genuinely believe the new levels of dedication to their sport, strict diet, no alcohol / partying, scientific VO2 measures, altitude training all combine to make today’s cyclists that much better than in previous years. And in any case, who can define doping. You could say caffeine, sugar, banana’s, ventolin inhalers for asthma all provide performance enhancement, but you could give me all the peds in the world and I’d never get near these guys, nor would most of us. They are genetically suited to the sport and who can blame them for pushing up to the legal boundaries of peds. Tadej & Jonas are incredible athletes who are a joy to watch. It’s only when you start cycling that you realise just how incredible these guys are, whether they are using peds or not 🤷🏻‍♂️

how is it possible for someone to do 475 watts for 1 hour?!
@williamstevens2382
@williamstevens2382 Месяц назад
Tadej is supposedly 66kg, so would ‘only’ have to do 430 watts for 6.5w/kg. That’s insane but someone has got to be the best

It isn't. Jeff miscalculated big time. Pogacar weighs a lot less than Jeff, around 66 kg. According to the chart at 0:48, Pogacar held "only" 6 w/kg for 50 minutes. That means Pogacar did 396 watts, and Jeff should've had a target of 438, not 475.

i think 6.5 is accurate for a single, all out effort to exhaustion. his documented numbers are mid-race, and in this case, twice up a long climb after 20 days of hard racing.
