Taddei’s timbre and resonance sit so clearly next to Kraus’ that you can really hear the different elements of the harmony. It’s not the most beautiful version of this duet I’ve ever heard, but it’s very powerful drama. And that exquisite piano at the end from both of them really “seals” the covenant of their friendship - for a time.
@@LohengrinO Thaddei is one of the baritone wonders of the entire operatic repertoire. I had not heard this before. His dynamic control was simply amazing. How absolutely beautiful. 🙏🏼❤️
Taddei and Kraus are one of the "last Mohicans" of the vocal heyday, which, unfortunately, will never return (IMHO). Although this interpretation is not of my most favorites (I prefer the duet Alfredo Kraus & Barry McDaniel), I admire these two titans. Taddei is a representative of the "old school" (the school of correct singing), which allowed the performer to be in phenomenal shape for many years (I like very much him two Figaro, Jago, Falstaff, etc.).
That time period was the Golden age of the baritone for sure: Taddei, Gobbi, Bastianini, Panerai, MacNeil, Merrill, more I’m forgetting I’m sure. Taddei could do it all: comedic, dramatic, etc. and what a long and magnificent career!
Kraus sounds incredible here; Taddei is always amazing. I think my favorites in this duet are Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc, but they're more French (and singing in French of course helps).
Sin desmerecer esta grabación, sugiero escuchar el mismo dueto en idioma original con el mismo Krauze y el barítono italiano Sisto Bruscantini , que me parece muy superior.
For example, the "blend" of voices as in the Gigli-De Luca recording does not exist here. Kraus and Taddei are not well matched vocally though they both acquit themselves artistically. This recording, for me at least, is not a "keeper.
