@@ChiefHerzensCoach : True, but virtuosic instrumentality in front of a paying audience is the pinnacle of God-tier entertainment. Where's the fun in seeing a soloist squint at the whole score on one page ? : ... compared to the shock-value surprise & delight, in witnessing him discard the notes for a completed movement with the same panache as a Chinese Martial Arts Master catching a mosquito with a pair of chopsticks that he wasn't even holding, when he first spotted the insect, just because he was so fast and focused that he could do it, merely to make someone gasp in awe of the audacious feat.

The more I listen to Roman Kim, the more I love the violin. I thought Ray Chen’s version couldn’t be surpassed. This might be a tad better technically, but musically I still prefer Ray Chen’s version. That however is partly because of the orchestral accompaniment in Ray Chen’s interpretation. We’re so lucky to be alive in the age of youtube and have artists like them as contemporaries. Definitely two of the finest violinists of their generation.

@@ChiefHerzensCoach This music is supposed to have been inspired by the devil... "Tartini himself gave the work its byname, explaining that he had written down the piece after waking from a particularly vivid dream of the Devil playing a violin with ferocious virtuosity." Roman actually plays it exactly how this should be played, with a lot of tension and violence. This is not about the technique which is btw amazing, this is about ... The music itself. It does not make sense to compare with Menuhin. Menuhin version when he was 16 years old is also excellent and its violence is less audible because of the limited rendering of the recording.

No need to argue about whether he is, or isn't, better than some of the other great violinists around today... We should simply applaud his fabulous technique, without letting that blind us to the real musicality in his playing. Also, of course, his arrangements and original compositions mark him out as very special, more than just a great performer.

@@ChiefHerzensCoach Both amazing musicians.. I don't believe Roman isn't into his instrument any less than Ray does... Roman is a very innovative Violinist from today. He's composing, he even modified the fingerboard of one of his violins searching for different approaches to the instrument, he's a very passionate Violinist.. and his playing shows the same from my point of view. Your taste is clearly with Ray Chen and that's fine, he's an amazing musician, but I don't believe it's accurate to compare them. Regards.
