Give Stained Vintage Tablecloths a New Life Quick Makeover with Easy Fabric Transfer Tip

If you shop the flea markets, antique malls and garage sales like I do you probably don’t bat an eye at the bins of vintage linens and tablecloths. I mean who wants to deal with permanent yellowing and stains?
I thought the same way until I was gifted a basketful of my mother’s vintage tablecloth collection. I had to find a way to refresh and makeover my beloved lobster tablecloth.
I like the ease of using t-shirt fabric transfer paper to embellish and cover up permanent stains. With a little trial and error (who knew the heat of an iron can actually intensify the color of the stain), I discovered that a little touch of a white fabric paint pen acted as a primer before the clip art heat transfer. Also, you don’t even need a printer, you can draw directly onto the front of the heat transfer paper.
I refresh two different tablecloths to give you lots of creative possibilities before your very eyes. Hope you feel inspired.

I had no idea you could transfer hand drawings without a printer. Opens the mind for new ideas. The transfers add a touch of “modern” to the vintage linens that may make them “new” again for those who didn’t grow up with table linens, scarves, doilies etc. The lobster theme is actually so cute. Thanks Joe! Can you believe how many vintage lobster collectibles my mother had in her pantry? It all makes me smile because I am now seeing the charm behind her collection when I didn’t pay much attention as a child growing up in her home. We’ll use the lobster tablecloth when you come to visit next!

We are kindred souls. I have a huge collection of all types of linen. You can soak linen in oxy clean white revive and the wash as usual. I have had a lot of luck with that method.

Hi Kathy! I just adore time worn linen. I’ve tried oxy clean, but it didn’t work on the majority of these stains maybe because they are so old and have already been heat set in the dryer by previous owners? It made me feel good to be proactive and give these vintage goodies a new lease on life. I’ll be breaking out the lobster tablecloth at the next summer picnic. Thank you for checking out this week’s episode. Black fabric markers are permanent on fabric. You seal in the ink with the heat of the iron. They will degrade over time if you put the printed fabric in the dryer so I air dry them. Let me know if you ever give some of these tips a whirl. Have a super week.

Great idea! I often simmer old white or light colorfast linens and cottons. A great big pot on the stove and stirring constantly. A strong detergent like Tide powder if you can find it works wonders. When the water gets murky you’ll know it’s time for a rinse bath. You will be amazed at what comes out of old dingy linens. 😬 Try on a tea towel or pillowcase to start, you’ll be hooked!

What a clever idea! I thought about tea staining or other types of dyeing. I also use them cut up in my slow stitching projects saving all that beautiful hand embroidery work. So glad I came across your channel. Thanks

Great technique! I have found that sometimes soaking the item in oxyclean for a week or two can remove stains with no damage to the fabric or design.

Since you used a black marker, could you use a red for the lobster or a yellow for the lemons? I like your idea. I had a nice stash of stained embroidered napkins and then I moved and had to let them go. I also like and appreciate vintage things. Thank you.

I would put the table cloth on the printer to make a color copy of the design on the transfer paper, rather than trace them.
