Ya I find a lot of Conklin's pictures dont do them justice. I saw the endurance crest and thought out of 3 colour the orange gun metal looks the least appealing, but then I watched some video and see some amateur pictures by reviewers, and turns out the orange gun metal is the most appealing. Some of their Conklin all American model like the raven black and earth brown also look unappealing and even matte and dull on picture but they are actually glossy. I think it's most or less true in resin fountain pens. if we cant see the real thing we have to see a couple videos and less touch up picture to see how it really looks. I saw a pricy pen and didn't understand the price, until I saw a video and see all the little details in the resin design.

Being a fan of bamboo dip pens, I'd very much like to see a pen directly integrated into a whole bamboo stick. Bamboo sticks are hollow enough that you can put a converter and a nib section in it. Some companies like Ranga pens make bamboo shaped pens out of ebonite and acrylic but I've yet to see a fountain pen made from (or rather made in) raw bamboo

David, very good review and observations. I tend to be attracted to fountain pens made with natural materials, like this ebony wood, and earth-tone colors, such as this model. The Gun-metal grip does add a nice touch. And I am a big fan of Private Reserve inks.

I really like the look of the wood on this fountain pen. The dark color is very nice. I don’t have any wooden fountain pen yet; it’s not a material I normally think of when I think of fountain pens. Resin or metal more often come to mind. Thank you for showing us this material and pen. Cheers

Among the (many) pens I own, only a handful are made of wood. I've just never been powerfully drawn to wooden pens -- until this past month. Your recent review of a pen produced by Stanford Wood Studio intrigued me. I went to their website and stumbled across a pen that combines wood and acrylic in a way that's visually spectacular. And the bonus is that it's a very satisfying writer. Thanks for introducing this maker. They've convinced me that wood can be an excellent material for fountain pens.

I’ve found wood pens to speak to me on many levels. Most of my love of wood pens comes out of my years in Boyscouts. My first foray into wood comes through Webson Gill. The smooth wood feels great in my hand especially paired with the brass. I imagine this Conklin will feel equally luxurious to me. Thank you so much for the review.

Thanks for the review as always, David. I owned one of these. The body and trim are striking, but, as usual (and unfortunately as expected), I was let down by the nib. Same story for all of these modern Conklin's. When I use a vintage Nozac or Endura, I cannot begin to fathom why anyone would go for one these "modern" remakes. Shame.

Beautiful pen and beautiful wood. I especially can sing the praises of the All American, since I just received for Father’s Day, an All American, Southwest Turquoise XF -from my # 1 daughter and her husband. Love the way it writes and feels in my “age challenged hand.” Until last year I couldn’t imagine writing with a pen of this girth. Now over the last year of “Pandemic Acquired” M800, Wancher 7-Treasures Bakelite, and Curidas I love the girth and am finding many of my slim pens uncomfortable for long writing sessions. Ha, Ha, so far I have not found the “recent insta gram post for this pen on your IG. I’ll look again in the am and hopefully will enter there before the window closes. Thanks for the great review and pictures of this pen and its beautiful finish.

Thanks for the chance to win! Never had a modern Conklin, but I have a vintage lever-filler Conklin with a very nice soft gold nib. Too bad the lever is prone to rusting. It would be fun to compare this modern one to the vintage one.

Conklin has made a winner of a pair with these wooden finishes. I own a walnut finish in this model with a broad nib and it's some pen... The wood really adds to the character of these pens and makes them so unique. Loved the review and the close up images specially. Makes me think if I got the wrong one from the pair.. 😊 As far as wooden pens go.. my dream pen will remain the Monty Winnfield Highwater. With its unique blend of materials, it oozes class. The modern Conklin clip hearkens back to the early one that the original Conklin pens had. A pretty classic design, at this point. Kind of like the arrow clip Parker uses. I have pens in different types of materials, plastics (I refuse to call any plastic a "resin," as resin, to me, is a vegetal product), ebonite/hard rubber, metal, etc, but only one with a wooden overlay. Solid wood intrigues me... Whilst I still see issues with many of the modern Conklin pens, I really don't see them for the All-American. Thanks for sharing!

The pen looks quite elegant with an added advantage of using natural material like wood, which feels better in the hand. But I am skeptical about the longevity of wood pens and the meticulous care required to maintain the wood finish. I wish more companies start making pens with eco-friendly materials.

Another helpful review - thanks! It would be nice to learn something about how they’re sourcing their woods and how sustainable that is. I think we often downplay sustainability questions (“There aren’t that many fountain pens in the grand scheme of things, and it’s surely better than disposable ballpoints.”), but this could be a space where the fountain pen community was playing some sort of leadership role instead of mostly rolling out shiny, sparkly plastics.
