Episode 32!
We take a look at my BOSCH plunge saw. I think this is a great addition to the kit. Not perfect, however I still rate it highly.

I've had this for about 9 months as a domestic carpenter and it made sense considering I'm on the Bosch platform. It isn't as good as the festool in my opinion but it's a great tool and gets the job done. The blades situation is very disappointing, Total Tools they said they can sell me the same blade that it came with for $150... I found solutions though, I ordered a heap of 42 tooth blades on Amazon from the UK for precision cuts at $57 per blade and for general carpentry Sydney tools sell a Milwaukee 18 tooth blade for $16 each.

Couldn't agree more mate. The festool is super nice, but the Bosch gets it done. It's annoying not being able to pick up a blade wherever. I've been grabbing those Milwaukee ones from totaltools.

I really like Bosch saws (I have the GKS 18V-68 GC and the GKT 55 GCE, the latter of which is simply the best saw I've ever owned) but I'm not as keen on the Bosch track. As it's very thin and flexible, so if the material is not totally supported you'll get kickback - I've got some pretty deep gouges in my track. Never had this problem with the Festool track so I'm back to using that with the Bosch saws.

I have both the festool and Bosch tracks too, I'd have to agree with you on the flex however I have gotten used to it. But yeah, really great saws, im a massive fan

I have the corded version and was about to buy the mafell due to compatibility with tracks. Nowadays all tracks seem to be compatible with one another. I love the corded version even thou the base issue but that's an easy fix. Love the review mate. I'm from Aussie too mate, keep up the good work. Looking forward to future content.

Yeah definitely a good thing being compatible with other tracks. Great little saw. Got the festool too, but the Bosch is so easy to whip out. Cheers for watching legend 🤙

Do you think you'd just go with the track compatible circular saw (GKS 18V-68 GC) instead if you had your pick? It definitely would be a bit bigger and bulkier than the plunge saw though. What other features differences would also keep you from picking up the plunge saw instead of the GC circular saw?

@viking.designs 2 года назад
All depends on what type of work you're doing. For a site carpenter, the gks18v-68gc would be fine for most applications, and much more versatile. For a finish carpenter or a cabinet maker, the plunge saw is the move. It's hard to beat that versatility.

When you should choose just one, for the occassional carpentry, e.g. terrase building, would you choose this one, or the gks 18v-68 gc? I know I am comparing a plunge saw to a circular one, but I can see some plunge-like principles with the 18v-68 gc there too?

Hey Petr. Sorry for the late reply. I think the dedicated plunge saw will give you more accuracy and control. If you’re doing precision work, get the plunge. If you’re just breaking down plywood etc, the 18v-68gc might do the trick as it’s way more versatile

I've got the corded version , so I'll stick with that. All my tools are bosch not one has ever let me down , and they do the most powerful 18v sds plus you can buy..

Yeah by the time I plug it into the vac, it might as well be corded anyways

Thanks for the review!!! this awsom tool is officially comercialized by BOSCH in Brazil. Reached out to BOSCH to know about its blade and for an unexplainable reason the blade is NOT available here!!! You may be able to import it from the US but will be very very very costy!!! Despite this is a good tool but with this uncommon 140mm blade I don't see a vantage over the lovely GKS 18V-68 GC 184mm!! For the blade reason this tool was wiped out of my wish list. Leave your comment.... would love to hear back from you and your audience!

Hey mate! Yeah the blade is fairly hard to come by in Australia too. I often have to go to specialist tool stores instead of general hardware stores, and even then, they only have one option. The other down side to this small, thin blade over something like the corded festool is it tends to bend when cutting something like hardwood. However it is still a great tool.

A nice quick overview. How does it compare to the festool in terms of cut quality? Some reviews don't rate it nearly as highly. I work with a lot of gloss MFC as a kitchen fitter and would love to change from my TS55 to a cordless plunge saw. I'm on the Bosch 18v system and ideally would get the plunge saw but cannot compromise on cut quality

Hey Rob. The thicker blade on the festool is nice. If you don't have a sharp blade on the Bosch, it will bend due to being a thinner kerf. It's understandable due to it being 18v, just something to keep in mind. It's hard to fault the festool

Rob; I started out with Festool TS55, went over to Mafell; I had the Mafell MT55cc and now have the Bosch GKT55. Both great saws. For plunge cuts in hard materials the Mafell is slightly more prone to kickback, in my opinion due to the lack of a front handle, which the GKT55 has. A friend has my MT55cc and it is a brilliant saw, and the cut quality is second to none. However, with the right blade on the Bosch (Blue expert blades) I cut Oak, Corian, laminated panels etc and there is nothing to complain about. With all that in mind I was a little hesitant towards the 140mm blade options and the GKT 52. Well, turns out I needn't worry. The saw is perfect for my intended use, interior carpentry and every now and then flooring and decking. It replaces a Mafell KSS40 18V in my case - which some people might raise an eyebrow over - but the Bosch suits me better, I use it on my "left over" Mafell rails and I researched the blades before committing to the GKT52. It cuts like a champ. One thing to consider is that the "battery optimized" blades from Bosch are same size blade/kerf as the previous Top Expert blades but they have shorter teeth! I made sure to source up the previous generation blades and they cut superbly and should last longer. I don't know if it takes a little toll on cut time - perhaps - but I honestly don't feel like the saw is struggling. I trimmed down veneered panels first thing I did and cut was splinterfree on both sides when crosscutting. For hard laminates you need to pre score for best results, I did not have the Top for Laminate blade (which is on order now) which should perform the best. With the correct blade (see GoTools for a comprehensive GKT52 blade guide) you are set for top quality cuts. I love the format of the saw, I have it in a Systainer IV with blades, accessories and a 18V barrel grip jigsaw. Very pleased with the kit, it replaces two other saws for me for use on site. For the most critical cuts in the shop I will still rely on my GKT55CE with the proper blade.

@@hrundgren4352 thanks for your reply. I've still not committed to either, though my apprentice is slowly collecting Bosch 18v tools and has already expressed an interest in buying it off me if I buy the Bosch and don't like it. My TS55 seems to have developed movement between the base and body of the saw so it may be this weekend I finally bite the bullet and purchase the gkt18v52. The relative lack of blade compatibility does very slightly concern me, a 160mm blade is the most common by far and as such I always know I can just pop out and grab a replacement any time rather than ordering them in advance.

@@robkirkham8873 140mm blades are scarce on store shelves. I bought four blades online - and also got a free pro core 5,5ah battery as well as one of the premium saw blades, Top Precision for Wood as a Bosch promo, (!) so I am set for a long time with three great wood blades, two laminate blades and a low tooth count rip blade. They have a dozen blades that fit so if you get one extra or two you need not worry.

That dust coming off the saw is questionable the Mafell is very good with it But I do like the look of the Bosch

Let's be honest, I tried to cut kitchen worktop, absolutely no chance, you must cut it three times, Later I tried to cut bottom of the door, the same problem, dust extraction is pathetic, just looks good for eyes, I got so angryI just gave it to my nephew for"playing" in his worshop. I believed "Profesional" is for profesional joiner, not for hobby jobs.
