Mike Smith died of complications from a freak accident of 2003, only months before induction into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2008. At least, he passed knowing the DC-5 were inducted.
When I was a kid, growing up in the 1980's, I never listened to 80's music. I listened to stuff like this. Cheers, Dad. Best education I could ask for.
@@grindfreakmike5754 well at least he's rated. How's your revolutionary, industry-altering instrumental mastery, brilliant songwriting, reengineering of standard equipment and musical arrangements coming along? With so much going for you, your next album is sure to go multi-platinum!
@Sara Mistral someone with a different taste in music preferred Dave Clark 5 over The Beatles and you somehow made it sound as if they were denying The Beatles's existence. You can piss right off
I was brought here with with a video from "Billboard" back from 2015, after he said he and his brother were inspired by this song and then it was "enough piano" and then it was a fight about who would play drums.... so sad he passed ...I remember my ex bf saying when Jump came out, I hope they play the shit out of this song and run it into the ground......and boy did they, Jump was constantly on the radio even listening to the same station, it was played on it at least a couple of times every hour or two and it was the heydey for MTV and was constantly shown on there as well...he got his wish....I prefer them with DLR over Sammy...to me it was "Van Hagar" after that even though they enjoyed even more success with him too...
I was shopping at our local super store a few months ago. Glad all over started playing on their speakers. At first I thought it was kind of sad that the dc5 had been relegated to this fate. Then, I looked around and noticed that almost everyone was quietly singing along. There may yet be hope for mankind!
Nothing at all sad about hearing great music of any type in stores. Stores know that people buy when they're HAPPY and FEELING GOOD. And great music helps move people in that direction. It's smart business.
Yeah I just finished reading the EVH/Rolling Stone article and when he mentioned this song. I just had to hear it, it’s been a while since listened to this tune.
I can't watch this without thinking of my Mum and Dad. Both were from Tottenham. My Dad used to go boxing with Dave Clarke at the TTA at Tottenham. He said he always turned up late and then couldn't be bothered to do any boxing. My Mum went out with Mike a few times before Dad and before they were all famous. The good old days of the 60's...
Back in the '60s we had a lead guitarist who physically resembled Mike Smith ~ The group might have been known as the Dave Clark Five, but Mike was the heart and soul of it.

I dunno. I feel the opposite. I just hear 100% plagiarism, it's a bot too much on the nose. Haircuts, facial expressions, those harmonies, that voice... Beatle clones woulda been a better name 😂
YES to all of that..AND ... Maybe some are just HATER/TROLLS ... you know, kind of Sociopathic personalities.. Don't worry about them... WE SANE people can enjoy good music even WITHOUT their "approval". LOL...! GLAD you enjoyed the video. : )
the king I am so glad I was there during the sixties.Too bad you will never know how great it was. That's why I always drop by to hear the groups from then.My friend was a security guard when the Beatles appeared in Atlantic City.
I don't know, all the oldies stations are drying up and those that claim to be oldies are quitting playing 60's, they're playing 70's disco, 80's, and 90's and calling it oldies. I just shake my head.
@Thou Swell I just can't listen to those stations who mix in disco and 80's, that just doesn't go with 60's and early 70's. Its quite jarring when you go from a 60's song to an 80's.

@@mattiemclean9882 What in the world seems to be BS about seeing my first concert at 7 yrs old? My dad took my brother and myself. I have no reason to post a fabricated response to impress people I don’t know like yourself. Many parents take their little kids to concerts. Anyway, this is the strangest response I’ve ever had on social media! I’m not sure what your point was.
@@gregorybejian9269 Yeah maybe you should have mentioned that your parents took you then it would not have been remotely odd and I wouldn't have bothered responding. Doesn't take much to work that out does it?
@@mattiemclean9882 ...and it doesn't take much to know any parent in their right mind would not let a 7yr old go to a concert by themselves... he probably assumed most people would get that.

Impossible for anyone not feeling Glad All Over when they hear this song. Impossible. Best feel good song of the 60's. And to think, they were right up there next to the Beatles for a short time.

Mike smith was The dave c 5! Great singer and keyboard player. Me and my mate had the privilege of drinking with him in The Cock Tavern Edmonton, North london on a few occasions, he wasn't big headed and he drank with us for hours really down to earth guy. And allways got his round in too! We use to do his dads garden in Edmonton and he had silver & gold discs up on the wall on his stairs.God those memories will last with me and my mate forever! Could you get a star to be like that now?(I doubt it). What a thoroughly nice man he was. God bless you Mike.Rip.❤

@bloke372 I was in 7th grade when these guys came out. Didn’t take me long to start calling them “Mike Smith 5”. 57 years later. I still refer to them as “Mike Smith 5”. It was such a travesty how Dave Clark kicked Mike Smith to the curb after Mike broke his neck. It infuriates me to this day, July 4th, 2021. Have a good day, my friend. 🙏🕉✌️
@@dr.OgataSerizawa Agreed, Dr. Reminds me somewhat of Alan Price ripping-off The Animals when he/it kept all the royalties garnered from 'House of the Rising Sun' in 1964, simply because he had inserted a few extra chords into a Traditional piece of out-of-copyright music. 🐍 Whatever ... Stay free. R 🍻 😎 🌠

Mike Smith never got the credit he deserved for being one of Rock 'n Roll's finest vocalists. He and Jay Black (Both still performing) were the unsung voices of their bands. Superlative.

Lenny Davidson deserves some credit too. Him and Mike were in a group together before joining Clark. But you are correct, Mike Smith was the greatest talent in the group. I once got into an online argument with someone on Facebook because I posted the FACT that Mike Smith was a better keyboardist than Paul McCartney. The person's rebuttal was that Paul was a better song writer and had many more hits than Mike Smith. I kept telling her that I agreed with that BUT Mike was clearly the better keyboardist, pointing out that Paul was self taught and his keyboard playing was very simple whereas Mike was a child prodigy, entering into one of the top music schools at the age of 13 and could play many of the most sophisticated piano tunes ever written. I was lucky enough to see him live twice before his accident. And I heard him play some classical music in between some of his songs.
I agree. There were lots of keyboard players at the time better than McCartney. And if you take McCartneys work with the Beatles out of the equation, there were a heck of a lot more talented song writers as well. A controversial point which few people will agree with, but in my view NONE of the Beatles as musicians particularly wow me as solo artists or in other bands (although I do love the Wilbury’s). The Beatles were far greater than the sum of their parts. Love the DC5 though.
Grillo, re: songwriting -- the Beatles had this other guy, named Lennon. According to some research, he was the primary songwriter for about 40% of their songs.
I was born in 2002 and I love 1920s-2000s music blues, rock, heavy, reggae, jazz, swing, rockabilly, pop, etc. People always tell me why I feel so nostalgic about eras and times I never grew up in, well in reality it's because I really did grew up on these eras of music. My dad would show me cassettes of MTV, Top of the pops (Jimmy Savile days included ), Ed Sullivan show and American Bandstand with Dick Clarke (RIP) and Freddy Cannon and I would just sing along as a kid. This doesn't include road trips with my dad, the movies he would show me and the parties. I'm proud to say I lived through these eras in my own way. I also enjoy the music of today since it will allow me to build my own identity of my generation. You folk grew up on some great music and times not gonna lie. I'm happy you all had fun and well so did I, heh. Thank you for reading this and I hope you have a wonderful day and happy life for you and your families.

@Caroline Baker Yes, that's one reason. He had a song writer who had an agreement to share the royalties 50/50. Clark had no problem signing his name to that song writers song but didn't live up to his part of the bargain. The writer didn't want to block new releases of the songs he wrote because he was friends with the other 4 members and knew they were not well paid.

Dave Clark had a couple of great songs, but the Beatles were consistently great. It reminds me of a speed horse who challenges a champion racehorse and ends up exhausted from trying. The Beatles had 20 number 1's in the US. Most bands were lucky to produce one or a handful.
Thumbs big time up Im only 72, As a Kid in Northern Ontario the English lads had these types of magazines Dave Clark 5 VS the Beatles. I loved them both, It feels like this worlds not a better place with out them.
Mike Smith was a truly incredible singer. It makes me sad to know he spent the last 5 years of his life in excruciating pain. He attempted to climb a 7 foot tall fence on his property (I think he locked himself out of his yard) when he fell off the top and landed on his head. He was paralyzed from the waist down with minimal movement in his left arm. He spent 4 years in a hospital, only to die a few months after being released. My prayers go out to you, Mike. There's no pain in heaven and you're with Denis (saxaphone) and Rick (bass guitar) now, probably making even more classic music
I just love these guys.....back in the day....it was Beatles...STONES...DCFIVE...ANIMALS....KINKS... That was the power line up when the british invasion occurred and I loved it....to young to get it but it was so good....thank you dave and group....
Love the bands from the 1960s but Dave Clark Five still out rock all of them with their hard-driving beat. Much better looking that the Beatles or the Stones, too. Their sound was truly unique and I still listen to it all the time. So much better than any music today. And Dave Clark, without a high school education, had smarts enough back in the early 1960s to retain all the rights to all of their songs so no one but him owns their song book. They had the first airplane for touring of the rock bands. He even bought the rights and all the tapes/films to a live weekly British rock and roll show called "Top of the Pops", which started Jan. 1, 1964 and ran for 38 years, when it went off the air.. Those tapes contain the only live recordings of all of the big rock bands and stars from America and Britain who performed on that show, a real treasure trove.
Thanks to Bobby Graham (RIP) on drums--perhaps the greatest British session drummer who played on all of the Dave Clark Five's big hits. He and Mike Smith wailed on " Bits and Pieces". Tore it up!!
Mike Smith (a name hardly anyone remembers) was one of the greatest vocalists in rock. The DC5 were influences on many groups that came later including The Ramones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. For me Mike Smith and Eric Burden were the two best UK male vocalists of that era. Others, (Jagger, Ray Davies, Daltry, Beatles, Manfred Mann's Paul Jones, etc) may have been better "performers" but those two were the best singers! (Although Paul Jones is very seriously underrated and comes in at #3.)
You must be on drugs not to mention all of the Beatles, who performed A+ on every Album and could make you laugh or cry depending on what the song said. Another great thing the Beatles did was send subliminal messages. ask John, he says it in an interview with David Cavett.
Mike Smith passed away in 2008, less than two weeks before the DC5 was inducted into the HoF. He had paralysis from an accident from a few years earlier.
I think Paul Jones is highly underrated too. I love all of the music from the 60s but and I don't think the Beatles were the best, even though they did sing some great songs. I feel like one of a herd following the Beatles when there were so many great groups in the 60s and 70s.
Dave Clark ! One of my heroes ..love the drums ! Keyboards guy has passed away now sadly The 60s were something else . Better than the crap I hear nowadays on the radio

*@Philip Zaza* Sure ....this is utterly brilliant , the very tight and smart production helped ofcourse. Shame though they made but a few of these pearls ; after '65 they became too lightweight for a Beatles and Rolling Stones fan.... A greatest hits compilation is all you need from the DC5........
Mike Smith as lead vocalist & Lenny Davidson on lead guitar were the power of this band. Sad that by late 1960's they were unable to move on to more progressive stuff when Beatles did Revolver & Sgt. Pepper despite their great sound! ♣
