Gladiator 2 Critics GASLIGHT Fans About Trailer Problems 

The Gladiator 2 official trailer is out and got instantly downvoted due an incredibly awful music choice. Music that just didn't fit the tone, aesthetic nor setting of ancient Rome. Yet the press decided to not just defend such an obviously unpopular choice, but misinterpret the problems in the first place. Deciding to spam the word anachronism, rather than realise it was simply about a holistic view of the movie. The gladiator 2 trailer also had a lot of other problems that distracted from the setting and made the trailer unrealistic. You end up spending your time analysing the trailer noticing problems, than getting emotionally involved in the story, like in A Knights Tale. But what did you think of the Gladiator 2 trailer? The message is pretty obvious at this point: “The things you love now belong to us and we’re going to do everything we can to ruin them because we hate you”.

Gladiator 2? Why? To what end? The first movie was a masterpiece and a stand alone film. We do not have the need for another.

The real shame is, the first Gladiator film, had one of the best musical scores ever made for film to take from.

The only entertaining part of “modern content” is watching how much money it loses.

I tried to watch the first episode of the second season of The Serpent Queen and I forgot that there were so many African women in positions of power in 16th Century France, much less all the other ethnicities. I was so mad at being lied to all these years that I turned it off.

The reason it worked in Knights Tale was because it was tongue-in-cheek. With Gladiator 2 it’s just dumb.

They really picked a song that had the word coliseum in it and called it a day.

It’s amazing how the music can take a movie looking dramatic to using rap music and making it look like a comedy.

"We want to appeal to a global audience." I had no idea that California was the entire globe.

"Sir, I found a song with "colosseum" in the lyrics." "License it, quick!"

When I first saw there was gonna be a Gladiator 2, my first thought was "why...?" My second thought was "Oh, Denzel... maybe it wont be so bad..." my last thought before closing the trailer was "oh.. Padro Pascal... welp now its gonna be stupid and dull... thanks guys..."

Remember tue ending music. His friend buries the little wooden figure. He says ....I'll join you soon, my brother, not yet, not yet. The epic music playing. You are just crying for the end that he's dead. EPIC.

Sequel nobody needed nor wanted

Gladiator never needed a sequel. The same can be said for a lot of films, though, with the rare exception.

Didn't give a f*ck about a sequel to Gladiator. Still don't give.

I was a big fan of the original, and this is enough to make me ignore this film. Of course, 2024 Hollywood doesn’t care one bit about my generation and demographic. Nor do they care about film making as an art anymore. It’s now all pandering, mass-marketed BS.

The biggest problem with this movie is that it shouldn't exist. There was ZERO reason for it to be made.

My favourite part of the hobbit was when "rock you like a Hurricane" came on while Legolas was stone surfing. Really touching moment

I call this the "Hamilton" effect. Some people really liked the musical Hamilton (which was no where near historically accurate, and it had rap music)... I never understood the blind fascination or the awards it received, but now that we got over the hurtle of trying to do a period piece with accuracy (too much work, & oh so boring)- we can now do anything we want with any play, movie or show and no one's allowed to complain out of fear of being called a racist if you don't love it. I love Denzel Washington as an actor... but this was a weird role to take. Especially considering if the Romans ever got their hands on a dark skinned Nubian, he'd of been fed to the lions alongside the Christians. Rome was a terrible place to be if you weren't Roman.

This is how much cinema has devolved. Gladiator is a story about revenge, honour and sacrifice. The music portrays this beautifully throughout. This trailer gives such a childlike mentality of “oooh sword fights wow look how cool it is to be a gladiator!”

Watching the fan trailer with original Gladiator music is not only better but also gives me those nostalgia vibes. Using modern music in historical dramas/epics can work. Like in the BBC Barbarians documentary trailer and 300, which also had totally diffrent music in it’s trailers.

Hollywood is determined to constantly remind you that you're not visiting ancient Rome, but sitting in a theatre in 2024 wondering why you left the house, found parking, bought your snacks and sat in an uncomfortable chair where the floor is sticky for some reason, spending nearly a hundred dollars for you and wife. And you notice all those things because you're not immersed in the movie.

Pedro Pascal and whoever that main actor is have all the gravitas and screen presence of a cave troll.

“It’s racist to say that Denzel Washington doesn’t fit in the setting of Gladiator 2.” Equalizer 3 is a movie set in Italy, which also stars Denzel Washington. Only difference is that it takes place in modern times. Nobody complained about that, so how exactly are we racist?

Are they not aware that there was already a black gladiator in the original movie, played by Djimon Hounsou? And yet, they didn't need to put hip hop music in the background and make him gangsta or anything back then, they just made him a realistic period character of African origin.

Recently seen hans zimmer live, i was anticipating the gladiator soundtrack the whole time, when it was finally played, i genuinely cried. Its an absolutely incredible piece of music for a fantastic film. Its so iconic and always will be. This... this is just sad.

Anyone remember in the 90s when big soulless corporations put awful rap into their bland films, shows and games to be "hip with da kids?" It was cringe then and it's cringe now.

I read, that for A Knight's Tale, the use of modern music was to represent how the music at the time would have been enjoyed. Like at the tournament, We Will Rock You fires us up and they surely would have had the equivalent even if it sounded completely different.

All they had to do was say; sorry we made a mistake by letting a 20 year old in charge of the music. Here's a new version of the trailer.

Hans Zimmer made the original movie atmospheric, sorrowful, uplifting and it added that overall timeless gleam...now it's just another movie that will age terribly as the accompanying music is just as critical as the actual screenplay itself.

As you said about the saints row trailer, it was almost built around the song they picked. The entirety of gladiator 2 isn't the same, it's purely based on the fact that the ye song has the word "colosseum" in it

I've studied music theory and can say that music is there in movies to create a mood. To create a mood you first pick a mode to create that mood. You have the generic modes Ionian, Dorian, Phyrgian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian, these are the Church modes, but not even an exhaustive list of modes, there are much more exotic modes to choose from such as the modes based on the harmonic minor, melodic minor and more - you can even create your own modes if you like but you must know a little about music theory. The thing though, that sets the mode, the characteristic of the music, is the chords that are used, and really bring the mode to bare, cement the mode, is melody used over the top using the notes that will really make the mode pop, it can be an instrument or voice. And that is where 'modern' rap music fails to create a mood, there is no chord structure in place, no overarching melody to really cement the mode and the voice is placed haphazardly over the top in a monotone way, it is not working with the music. So, in effect it is just totally rhythmic in nature except the voice is not following the rhythm. Rhythm is an important part of music, no doubt about that, one the the seven precepts of music, but, without an underlying chord/melody structure you are not "creating" a mood, you are basically creating a rhythmic noise. Sometimes I enjoy rhythmic noise, Taiko drumming for instance, but, creating a mood, nope. Now that music might appeal to people in certain cultures with nothing else. But there is more, much, much more to creating a mood - and this I'm afraid fails the test.

Hans Zimmer. One of the most talented composers of movie scores ever.... Who was nominated for an oscar FOR Gladiator.... In a sequel for a stand alone movie made over 2 decades ago which is trying to leverage nostalgia to attract viewers, chose to say 'f*ck it, throw in hip-hop.'

The only thing I want to hear in a Gladiator movie is Lisa Gerrard's vocals over Hans Zimmer's symphonic music.

People forget that the earliest trailers of the original Gladiator had Kid Rock "Bawitaba" playing in the background.

I agree that rhe music doesnt fit the trailer but calling Hip Hop "niche" is wild.

'Now we are free' became a legendary soundtrack because it fits the movie so well. The scene of Maximus walking through the field of wheat while 'now we are free' plays is still so iconic 25 years later people still post viral video's about. I doubt this music will have the same effect.

Gladiator's OST was brilliant & I still listen to it when the mood takes me.

I was at a Minnesota Vikings game at the Metrodome when they decided to get the crowd fired up with some awful rap noise. When it finally ended you could hear a pin drop in the stadium. All I could do is laugh out loud at such a misplaced choice of music. Thankfully that was the end of that failed experiment.

I'm not supporting any new movie, show or game made for "new audiences" but using an old beloved name just for marketing.

The repeated use of the word anachronism in different articles actually made me think that someone higher up lobbyed/sent a task to those "news" agencies to publish articles with specific bullet points but their journalists are either too stupid or lazy or whatever else that they mostly just copy-pasted those bullet points and add some extra text for volume. Alternatively, they use the same AI to write shit.

It’s about Hollywood 2022. Which is when all this was really put together. Keep in mind they are always 2 years behind due to production. Which is why they shouldn’t chase trends they need to make them.

I had so many people trying to say it was ist in every comments section about the trailer music who insisted we'd been fine if it was Aerosmith or something. And no, that'd been terrible too

hip hop: music about criminals glorifying their criminal behavior all to further their personal greed, hunger for power, lust and disrespect for others who aren't within their small circle. Gladiator I: revenge story about a highly respected person done wrong by a criminal pursuing personal greed and hunger for power. Gladiator II trailer: those things are basically the same, right?

A good example of this issue in the past was the soundtrack for "Young Guns II". The film makers wanted to use Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" because of the title of the song and it had the lyrics "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride...". Jon said that the lyrics didn't fit the genre or movie (steel horse is a motorcycle for one), so he wrote "Blaze of Glory" specifically inspired by that movie. The end result speaks for itself.

Same, got halfway through the trailer and hated it. Never wanted a 2nd Gladiator, we never needed another one. Gladiator is a top 3 movie for me and never though that Denzel would join a DEI project. Seeing Hollywood's cuck Predro Pascal in it, for some reason, told me everything I needed to know.

"Change the formula of the original" - "Distance itself from the original" Everything wrong with Hollywood summed up in two sentences.

One of the key things about Gladiator which punctuated the deep and dramatic moments was the music. The calm amongst the storm reminding the audience of the purpose of the character and the struggle that is taking place. It popularized an incredible song the elicits so many emotions. The choice they made here for the music just shows an immediate downgrade in caliber - or i suppose more fairly a change in tone different than that of Gladiator. I think the major mistake they made here is they called this Gladiator 2 - name it whatever else and I think they would've been fine.

I agree on many points but saying " did he actually try to make his accent sound Roman " is funny. In all movies directed in English about Rome the accent of the Romans is British.

There's a fan edit of the trailer that included a cover of Now We Are Free instead of the rap music, and it was 100X better than the actual trailer. In fact there are other fan edits trailers to Gladiator 2 where better music is added.

My big concern is that I saw Napoleon, Big Shark and Godzilla -1 in the same week. Godzilla was the most historically accurate and Big Shark didn't have the most incoherent story line. Scott is past it

Music does soo much for a movie scene. Another reason why I love the Dune Movies so much. The music is just always absolutely fitting and making the scenes complete. I get goosebumps when I think of the Arena Scene with Feyd Rautha. The music was so on point there. Music choice is very much important for a movie
