26:16 I love the fact that Maximus' vision of the afterlife is the road leading downhill through the fields toward his farm, with his wife and son safe, both waiting for him to come home. Beautifully poetic.

This movie is engrained in my soul. When I was in my early 20’s and got my first apartment I didn’t have cable and I had this on DVD. I literally watched it everyday for a year. Gladiator is everything to me ❤❤❤

It is such a beautiful and poetic ending. I melt every single time watching it, despite knowing what's going to happen. The casting, the acting, and the soundtrack, makes this film a compelling watch every single time. My favourite film is possibly the Thin Red Line, a war epic that is also thoughtful, philosophical and poetic. If you're in need of a laugh, then Planes, Trains and Automobiles is excellent, as well as being heartfelt.

Everything about this movie was incredible. All of the acting was top tier, all of the music was top tier. The visuals were top tier. Everything was top tier. Commodus, as much as you hated him during the movie, you can't deny how incredible he was as an actor. He nailed the role. Russell Crowe nailed it. All the actors nailed it. And the story is simply amazing. This movie was astounding, and it always remains as one of my top, most favorite movies.

Great reaction to one of my favorite films. This was back when Russell Crowe made one amazing movie after another - L.A. Confidential, Master and Commander, Cinderella Man, A Beautiful Mind…. I could keep going. All of them worth watching! And I see you’re watching Game of Thrones. Now I have to subscribe!

I found out the wounds you see on maximus face are real. His horse backed into some branches. If you look close, you can see the stitches on his cheek.

"Are you not entertained?" Fun Fact: This movie was shot in chronological order over eighteen weeks. What Script Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it and her frightened reaction was genuine. The Man Behind The Curtain Fact: After Maximus (Russell Crowe) shouts the "entertain" line in Zucchabar, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left. Home Sweet Home Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia. Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

Marcus, to his second in command, "How long has he been gone". Second in command "About two hours". Somehow I don't think they had a concept of time in those measurements during that era.
@yermatedave4930
@yermatedave4930 2 месяца назад
Eh, you'd be surprised. The Mesopotamians "invented" the days if the week and the hours of the day. Romans had water clocks and sundials, and most people could reckon the hours by glancing at the sky.
@ProfDanielVargas
@ProfDanielVargas 2 месяца назад
Of course they did, how do you think they measured the passage of time? They divided the day into equal parts very similar to how we do it today in a few different systems and used candles and lamps and hourglasses to keep the accurate passage of time very closely following the passage of equally section parts of time of the day, like hours, minutes, etc.
@ProfDanielVargas
@ProfDanielVargas 2 месяца назад
It would have been very important for Generals, legions and batallions to keep track the passage of time in order to plan ahead and properly closely follow the passage of hours so they would be able to properly attack or be prepared for an attack, account for shadows, light in the battlefield, sundown, etcetera. I don't know what people think of people back then, in reality we haven't really changed that much since then.
@ProfDanielVargas
@ProfDanielVargas 2 месяца назад
@@yermatedave4930 exactly, sundials, the passage of time watching the skies and light variation as well as stars was very important back then as well. People were very in tuned with this and could easily and properly tell about the passage of time by just looking at the sky, the stars, the position of the moon in the sky, (moon cycles were also very important and memorized by all), it's very likely they could immediately tell how much has passed by just looking around them or glancing at their environment. It's like reading a map or an analog hands clock, people are just capable of doing it naturally if they grew up doing it. You know immediately when you see it. (Which are a couple of things that newer generations are also losing the capability for doing, btw).

Great reaction like always. Love this movie! At the very start of the movie Maximus overrides an order from Quintus to move their artillery back. He says the danger to their cavalry is "acceptable." This might give you the idea that Maximus is a callous commander who uses his men as pawns. He immediately turns this on its head by going off to his secret side army to lead the cavalry charge himself. He wouldn't order his men to take a risk he wouldn't take himself. That is a beautifully subtle bit of character writing to clue the audience in to what kind of man and leader the main character is. The scene where Russell Crowe's describing his home, he's actually describing a place near where he lives in real life, that's why you can see so much emotion. Brilliant! And there are some others fun-facts, the scene in which Commodus yells "Am I not merciful?" right in his sister's face was improv at that point. Joaquin Phoenix was just scripted to say it the one time. He ad-libbed the repeat of the line as a menacing yell right in her face and that is real shock on Connie Nielsen's face. I´m curious if you'd pick up on one of the melodies and structure of that battle music in Gladiator was also used in a piece for Pirates since I guess Zimmer just really liked that melody and figured it fit both epic battle and epic daredevil stuns and escapes pretty well. Good memory on the ears! This movie I'd say based upon real events. Maximus' character is fictional but Commodus was real, he was the son of Marcus Aurelius and did play at being a gladiator whilst Emperor (once killed 100 lions in the arena) but that's about as far as the reality goes I believe. Keep up the good work.
