The Bear Grylls Fire Starter by Gerber is described as a compact and reliable survival tool designed for outdoor enthusiasts.
Is it worth $20?
Experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat as the @GenXGlampingGuy ferociously strikes his Bear Grylls ferro rod. Then, decide for yourself if the Bear Grylls Fire Starter by Gerber is worth the $20 bucks.
In theory, combining a ferrocerium rod and a metal striker helps generate sparks for starting a fire. In practice, this method does produce a spark, but as you'll see in this video, even a glamping survivalist like the GenX Glamping Guy struggles to use the Gerber Fire Starter to ignite a glampsite fire.
Watch the full video for a satisfying conclusion including how I ultimately created a roaring glampfire.
Lessons learned after 420 strikes:
-The rod needs to be scraped before it will begin producing sparks.
-Prepare shavings and materials that are more likely to catch fire, such as cotton balls dipped in Vaseline, to hold the flame and give you more time to build the fire around them.
-Try fewer strokes of the rod with more pressure.
-Try pulling the rod away while holding the striking hand in place.
-Aim the rod at what you want to ignite.
-Just use a Bic lighter!

Tim here I've got something exciting to talk to you about today it has to do with building fires and it has to do with something that arrived in the mail recently.
I'm going to open it up and show you what's happening here.
Let's get rid of this bubble wrap.
[loud echoing boom] Oops! l
Let's get this box out of the frame look at what we have here.
This is the Bear Grylls Gerber Survival Fire Starter.
This picture of the dude kind of looks like Mark Wahlberg. Marky Mark.
Let's take this out of the package

It's made by Gerber and is a compact fire started with ferosserium I shouldn't know how to say that ferrocerium rod and metal striker.
It's got a lanyard to keep the product secure and together and finally it has emergency whistle.
[Slo Mo] Whistle .
Let's carefully open this up see what we have.
All right, so this must be the rod they were talking about.
Ooh, there's spark!
All right I'm actually going to do this over by the fire pit so I don't start a fire here.
Look at that Isn't that cool?

I might need something a little easier to start a flame.
I put down some toilet paper. Let's see if this catches.
I'm like throwing Flames, ooh, come on, come on.
Well, this isn't as good as it looked in the video on the website
It's kind of ridiculous.
I could just use a lighter.
Who is this guy anyway? Some kind of survivalist? Does he really use this when he's out and about?
All right the videos on the website are bull *&!T!
Yeah look at that.
