Amazing how simple and straightforward it is to cut glass. I've been researching the subject of glass cutting for a project I'm planning that requires me to create a glass divider for a leopard frog tank. At first, I assumed I would need some highly specialized equipment or a service to cut the glass for me, but it seems like it's simple enough I can handle it myself.

I also wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your live chats. I'm in Scotland so the wrong time zone to watch live but I love them on replay when I'm foiling for example. Always learn a lot and so good to connect with people in these difficult times. I'm quite new to glass and really enjoy learning. Thank you both, Rebecca

Not the true purpose in fact, the notches are there to enable you to Groze the edges of the glass if needed - look up ‘Grozing Iron’ as used before wheel cutters were invented/commonplace, it can be used as you suggest for small slivers only but this is not its primary purpose. The ball on the end of the cutter is used to ‘tap’ underneath the cut which if done in a controlled manner will introduce a separation fissure which helps to cut be run by hand etc. It is also employed when cutting shapes or holes, tapping and running the cut is one of several methods employed for breakout otherwise.

I used mine to accurately gauge the glass thickness for slightly wonky handmade glass pieces but did not know this was also possible. Thanks for this top tip!

Found a site trying to sell a glass cutter like this and they were saying the notches are for scoring the glass. 😕 I wasn't sure until seeing this exactly what the notches were for, but even before it was clear to me (who has never used a glass cutting tool) that they are NOT for scoring the glass. They're clearly on the opposite side from the cutter. Now I know the correct info, and it makes sense given the three different notch widths on the back of the cutter. IMO people in the business of selling a tool should know the right way to use it. I definitely would not buy from them. 👎 Thanks Conway Glass for this helpful demo! 👍

Thank you so much for this video! I was going through some things and ran upon one of these yesterday morning ... and thought, "What in the world is this for? " 😅 .... I'm not even sure who's it was, haha! I remember my dad cutting glass for farm repairs and hobbies... and my mom's sister used to babble in stained glass art... or I might have just ended up with it in a bulk buy at an auction or yard sale. 🤷‍♀️ I feel inspired now to find the time to use this handy tool!

JThanks for providing the info that the title and cover photo advertised in a voice I could understand. I had just watched a video of some old guys hands and a tool while he rambled on in a accent I didn't understand (not recognize) about his dead cat and nonsense for 6 min before I was able to find this gem. Solid video, gets a like from me bro .

Hello i have the question i only know whats the tip for but what is the ball even for?
@TheBootyWrangler
@TheBootyWrangler 3 месяца назад
I would assume, after watching Indian glass artisans work extensively, that it is a rounded weight used for tapping the bottom of the glass under the score after scoring and before breaking it apart with the hands. Seems to make it much easier to separate two scored pieces by hand.

Ahhhh cool. I've been searching for this explanation, thank you! As another poster said, I too saw someone explain that these 3 notches were for making notches in the glass but it didn't sound right to me. I read somewhere that the ball at the end of the tool is used as follows: once you have scored the glass, turn it over and gently tap along the cut. This will help separate the 2 pieces. Is this right? Thank you again! Isabelle in Victoria BC
