That pain behind the ears is getting even worse with mask wear. If your glasses were hurting before, now it's about to explode with little aliens popping out everywhere! Or it may feel like it at least. In this video we'll talk about what's causing that, and where the pain most likely originates from and what can be done about it.
While this is more often an adjustment that should be left to professionals (high breakage risk) I'll show you what you can do at the end of the video just because I'm nice like that.
***Disclaimer: DIY at your own risk, again there is a higher than normal probablity of damaging your frame with these adjustments! If you're not comfortable doing it, consult a professional.***

I wish someone would just make padded temple covers. Just a little padding would be such a relief! I've tried rubber covers to keep them from slipping, and I thought those might add some comfort, but they didn't.

There is actually such a thing, but a proper adjustment and fit far exceeds them. Check out silicone temple covers on amazon :) they add some cushion and reduce slippage. I'm just not a fan of bandaids 🙃😁

It’s a huge problem where it’s a problem! I once had a pair that was just a bad design and no amount of fitting could fix it! The dolts made the temple tips a triangle shape and the point side was facing inwards toward the skull. No amount of adjusting could fix that shortfall and I was relatively green at the time. Today I would reshape and file the frame to fix it. 😈😂

I just bought a pair of Tom Ford eyeglasses with my new prescription which I really love. However, after wearing them for about two weeks I’m noticing that I’m getting somewhat of a irritation type rash right where the temple tips lie behind both of my ears. What can I do about that besides rubbing a little Vaseline on the irritation to kind of buffer it a bit?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 года назад
I wouldn't recommend Vaseline on the frames for several reasons... more likely it's too tight/loose back there causing the irritation. Alternatively it could be an allergy to the material but thats fairly unusual for the temple tip area just due to the common materials there.

I've had this problem for over a year now and it's destroyed my ability to focus on reading or study. No matter what I do, anywhere near that area hurts like hell. Not a medical condition like mastoiditis or anything. I've actually ended up bending plastic glasses so that the pressure point is right in front of my ears, just before the temple on the skull. It feels snug, and still hurts after a few hours but literally anything behind my ears is nothing doing. Wish there were a way to test frames properly before buying them -- the only solution most people give ultimately is "time to buy a new frame", but I can't afford lasik let alone throwing money like that...
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 года назад
Sensitive mastoid bone, look to thicker acetate frames and ask for an S bend or mastoid curve, these aren't super common so you may get some wierd looks asking 😅. Both are better at getting the pressure off that bone, some of us just have a more prominent and sensitive area behind the ear (right side specifically for me). Some frames I can wear fine without special bending, but some (especially metals) are especially difficult to get right. I've rarely had a frame that couldn't be made to be at least tolerable, but it does take some effort, and some are nearly impossible.

I found an old pair of glasses I had from 10 years ago which were perfectly adjusted, noticed the same thing, even though they were far less wide at the front, they were less curved inwards at the back and anded up being equally as wide there. The pressure was in an entirely different spot near the front. Perhaps after a year it would build up just like the pain caused by my current glasses, but that just means alternating them "could" work. Obviously minor differences in where they would sit on your face (especially with my nose being quite uneven and one side of face sightly drooped back) would cause the angles of the lenses to be slightly off and switching between the 2 would give me a headache, and it would be expensive to do. Since things seem to be fine and then after having to wear glasses all the time, wherever they apply pressure to gets more sensitive over time, which makes it seem as thought theres no permanant solution. That being said, attaching lenses to your face by resting arms over your ears and nose sounds pretty primitive when we have electronic devices that are just a few atoms wide. It could be within our lifetime that we just either come up with a way of fixing/replacing your eye without any drawbacks, or have a variable contact lens over our eye that allows air and liquid to pass through so your eyes never dry out and you dont need to take them out or switch to something else for a different distance.

Just bought the original wayfarers, and i'm really liking them. However, after a couple hours use, my ears started to hurt. With my old cheap lightweight sunglasses, this didn't happen. Will the pain go away, or will it always be there? Should I just return them and find another? Thank you.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 года назад
I dont work with wayfareres often, but the few that have crossed my desk have been practically impossible to get to hold an adjustment. The material will relax some if it's too much clamping pressure behind the ears, but that's the best you can hope for. From a friend that works with them everyday, If you have the "new" wayfarer 2132 those are more adjustable than the "original " 2140 model 🙂 The AO Saratoga is real acetate with metal cores and fully adjustable and competes directly with the wayfarer; might be worth checking those out, and if you do go that route I would love if you order from my shop 😁🥰.

I know the frames aren’t the wrong size. They’re the same size as my old pair. And the left side is perfect out of the box. As usual. Hi, I’ve been to my Optician numerous times for adjustments after misaligning my glasses. I appreciate it’s difficult but if they manage to get them comfortable they’re too loose and low and I lose the focus and get a headache (I’m -9 varifocal). So another adjustment is made and the visions better but they hurt behind one or both ears or on the top of my ears. .I’m in despair now as it’s been like this for 3 weeks. They were so comfortable before I damaged them. Please advise. How would I adjust them myself if it just affected one ear? Thank you !
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 года назад
Ooph, yup at -9 every detail of fit matters, you can effectively fudge the rx by 0.25D easily with the adjustments. Overall it's rarely ever one temple that needs adjusted and every one thing makes the balance of the entire frame change. This is why I LOVE laibach for higher powers, ergonomically balanced and hard to knock out of adjustment. Sounds like the balance point has been shifted too far back or the bend for the ears too far forward. Usually the culprit in that case :) I had one +12 recently thst took awhile to pivot the balance point to the right place too, I wanna say that one took a few visits spread out over a couple of weeks, so sometimes it does take a bit, even for me 🙃😁

I just got my glasses recently and when I wear it, I don't feel that it is tight and it is just perfect. But when I wear it for a long period of time, it starts to feel a little tight on my ears even if I take it off. Is my glasses too tight or is it because it is my first time wearing glasses

Well, not sure anyone's asked this - I have worn glasses 60 yrs and on one ear,, the top RIDGE of the actual ear cartilage is so tender, actually painful to the touch. My newest eyewear don't seem to touch it, but there is still a lightweight hearing sitting there .... yes, we won't even go near discussing masks .... but does that top ridge of ear cartilege ever get damaged or even broken? Not sure who to ask about it, like if an ear surgeon or plastic surgeon would be the one to ask.

Great question! I've never run into someone with permanent damage to that area, but occasionally someone sensitive with more nerve concentration there as the skin thins with age can be a difficult fit due to sensitivity. Definitely more of a dermatologist question, but still relevant. So that's my half a cent on the matter 🤪

@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 года назад
It can be either and work. Really a matter of frame design and head shape for perfection, but if you have a very sensitive mastoid bone behind the ear it can be easier to get it right with straight back and following the natural curve of the head :)
@zhenzhoutoh7345
@zhenzhoutoh7345 3 года назад
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 actually it's not the mastoid bone that's causing the problem, it's just that part of my plastic glasses is rubbing my ears on the side, on the part when it first touches the ear, around that part right there. @@zhenzhoutoh7345 you can go to my website and email me through there :) I suspect the temples are too short from your description, so make them more straight and add the curve inwards towards the back of the head following your head shape. Depends on the makeup of the contacts, there are many out their (especially dailies) designed for extended wear up to 12-15 hours. Proper fitment behind the ear will definitely help on the glasses wear side. I have a couple pairs I haven't fully fitted myself that can be quite a pain by the end of the day, but they're pairs o don't wear all day often... so I don't think about it until it's too late and then I'm taking them off 😂 ye won't be judged here my me! 😂😂

Jup I've had surgery on both my ears twice and since then they're more sensitive - and also since then, no matter what I do, glasses will just hurt after a couple of hours. Especially when wearing headsets. But in general, they will. I have gone back to the optician multiple times and they adjust it and in the store it seems fine, but a couple hours later - in some near-perfect cases maybe I won't notice for a couple of days but it always comes back - it will hurt. I have put paper kitchen towel around the frame to relief the pressure to make sure it wouldnt dig in too much. I have been given 'kiddie rubber holders' (no clue what they're called in English, I'm not a native speaker. They're shoved onto both ends of the glasses and instead of the frame forming hooks to go around the ears, the rubber does this and is more gentle) and these will also still hurt after a whle. I have taken them off and only put them on when I need to look down a lot to keep my glasses in place, but even without them and with almost straight ends, the frame will end up hurting. I have contacts too and I often find myself switching to contacts to both relieve myself of the pain and to avoid having to clean the glasses continously (the tiniest speck can annoy me and thus I clean them super often and it's annoying)... but the problem with THAT is that I can easily wear my contacts too much, dry my eyes out, vision gets blurry and if you wear contacts too long too often it can lead to implications and eventually blindness.... So I really need to get my glasses' pain problem fixed (especially since I wear a headset as well for over 12 hours a day, easily. For work and for hobby (gaming, chatting with friends, music, etc)), but even after watching this I'm not so sure how since my optician so far hasn't been able to do a satisfactory job yet. It seems clear to me what needs to happen (before and after watching this), but maybe it's not as easy as I think. Maybe my ears are just beyond saving >.< For me i also don't think it's just the bone, but also the scar tissue from the surgery. But if it clamps to the head instead of the ear it should be fine... maybe I'll go back once again. 10-ish times the charm, right?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 9 месяцев назад
The enhanced sensitivity of the nerve endings in the area and scar tissue creating additional pulling definitely are doing you no favors. In your case something more like a sport strap setup with the frame adjusted otherwise rather loose would be an option to consider. But a skull fit vs ear hooks definitely where I would start.

One of two things, its either too tight (too much clamping force going into the head at that spot) or the bend down is too soon. The latter is usually easy to tell as it will make the ear tender to the touch and red from constant rubbing and tension.

I’ve got a weird situation, maybe you can offer advice? No matter what temple length I choose and no matter how I adjust the stems, my right ear always seems to visibly bend outward when I’m wearing glasses. My left ear is totally fine and the stem / arm of the glasses easily slides behind my ear and rests flush against my head, but my right ear always sticks out a little bit (like the stem is pushing against it and there isn’t enough space between my ear and the side of my head for the stem to sit comfortably like it does on the left ear), and then my right ear becomes aggravated and starts to hurt. And when I look in the mirror I can literally see the frame stems pushing my ear outward. I think that’s why it starts to hurt… but I just can’t figure out how to fix this. I’ve tried 142mm, 145mm, 150mm… no matter what I do it seems like my left ear always looks and feels fine but my right ear gets pushed out by the glasses and begins to hurt after a little while of wearing them. I get a weird pain and sensitivity on the back of my right ear too. Any suggestions on how to fix this? And do you think permanent damage could be done to one’s ear by wearing an improper size frame? Because I did purchase a 142mm pair from Zenni 2 years ago… the stems weren’t long enough and the glasses were constantly sliding down my nose so I bought silicone grippers / extenders for the ends… but I’m wondering if the pressure of those silicone grippers tugging at the back of my ear all the time may have been the cause of whatever issues I’m dealing with now. Maybe the constant pressure caused by the stems pulling at the back of my ear caused the tissue to become damaged or more sensitive?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Год назад
permanent damage is generally unlikely as that area is rather maleable, but it can take time for things to relax. As for preventing the ear being heavily pressured on that side with the glasses, it's all about getting those bends right, all while avoiding putting pressure on the mastoid bone. It's a delicate balance in some cases, and I'm going to assume you have a pretty prominent mastoid bone on that one side (super common, I have one on the right side myself). Which makes adjusting even more complex. Unfortunately, I don't have an easy answer for you, but a really good optician can resolve most of those issues assuming a good frame choice is made to begin with. If not a new & well fitted pair of glasses is the resolution :) Good luck!

Hi I have the problem if any thing touches my ear for a minutes it was paining like a hell, even wearing mask for a while pain like hell, now I ordered My glasses and it's very very painful on upper ear to wear, please any one help me.
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 10 месяцев назад
In this case usually caused by sensitivity behind the ear via a very prominent mastoid bone. Without an absolute perfectionist doing adjustment (and sometimes even then) the best adjustment is one that follows the skill curve as opposed to a traditional fit that bends down behind the ear.

@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 года назад
Unless that started after a recent adjustment or new glasses I definitely wouldn't assume it's glasses related. If they're too tight behind the ears it's definitely a noticeable pain that starts behind the ears and is sensitive after removing the glasses.

I haven't worn glasses in a year or more. Finally got some new ray bans and Calvin kline. Well long story short I'm an order selector in a freezer so I have to wear a beanie and well....holy hell does the shit hurt. I hope I just get used to it or else I'm not gonna be taking them off for work
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 года назад
ooph! That's a little different scenario, as the beani is artifically increasing the clamping force of the glasses on your head. A bayonet temple pair would be a great alternative to reduce that, but I'm sure isn't a great option to buy an additional pair right now.. Alternatively some adjustment to reduce the area where the beani and the glasses overlap is in order :)

@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 8 месяцев назад
I think if it’s an acetate frame as the material stretches in that area it could get better, but really it needs a proper bend to be right. If the bend itself is too far forward causing the tightness, no amount of wearing is going to fix it.

@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 8 месяцев назад
@private4735 most likely an acetate then :) the best adjustment for acetates is achieved after a couple weeks of wear so the natural stretch in the frame/material happens. I agree that’s a great path to take :) And you’re welcome!!

Watch carefully. That's more in relation to where the bend starts (too far forward) and not the arc inwards. I'ld imagine they slip down a bit in that position too, as it throws the balance off.

Yikes, sounds like there's a lot out of whack with this fit. Sorry, I'm not gonna be much help from afar on this one, but it sounds slide you're getting the idea, to keep pressure from building in one spot it should be spread evenly behind the ears with the bend starting right at the top of the ear :)

🧐 I’m adjusting unworn cold frames that need heated from room temperature. Simply wearing the frame gets it warm enough. Alternatively, that machine is a fancy hair dryer, and I have a video about how to properly heat plastic frames for adjusting using one 😎🥂. Metal frames don’t need heated. I mention all of this in the video 🧐
