2 years ago when I was 17 I had glaucoma, I don't know why I have this disease, even though I don't have a lineage from people who have glaucoma and a list of other causes of glaucoma, after I experienced glaucoma my life has changed, I can't accept why I have this disease even though I'm still young, it's been more than 2 years for me to accept my disease, and after walking for 2 years, I feel lately my eyes don't look as wide as before, next month I will check my visual field, please pray for me, so that my eyes still have a normal field of view :)
I wish you well. I was recently diagnosed with glaucoma (I'm 44 with a strong maternal family history so I kinda expected it). My oldest daughter has also been diagnosed with glaucoma (she's 20) so she's low-key freaking out over this.
Good Luck with it all....How did u find out that you had it.....Was it certain symptoms or by random eye check ....And what are you experiencing different with your eyes ?

Hey doc, I work at an ophthalmology practice in FL and just wanted to let you know that we started using your videos at work for training new hires who are new to ophthalmology. You do a good, clear job of explaining everything. Thanks for making the videos!
@@kylewashington1841 they likely mean for their new technicians. i’m currently a technician in training watching these. technicians usually don’t need degrees
Thank you doctor. I find your videos very informative. My father had Glaucoma and my eye pressure is elevated. I am vigilant with my exams and thankfully everything has been good. Once I learned that Glaucoma treatment is highly successful in preserving eye site, I found there is no reason to fear it if you keep up with thorough exams. I preach yearly exams to my friends and relatives since once vision is impacted, it may be too late to do something. Once again thank you.
Very helpful. Thanks so much for making this series. I have recently been diagnosed with glaucoma and am educating myself on what I have, what to expect, and how to work well with my optometrist.
THANK YOU!!! I made this series awhile ago but I know I need to remake them. Any specific recommendations or questions you have that I could better address? Thank you
Thanks, doc. It seems technology is getting better and better. I feel optimistic that in the future there won't be blind people and everyone will see normally.
I absolutely _HATE_ the air-puff test. The pull-the-eyeball-with-a-stick (the Goldmann) is infinitely more comfortable. Actually, I think the air puff would be much more comfortable if it was the patient who pushes the button to activate the "air bomb". Because it's not so much the impact that's the problem (the impact is minimal) but the _suspense._
As a glaucoma patient the air puff test would scare the hell out of me I never have it but I never want to I'm fine with the blue light touching my eye to check my pressure.
having had many air puff tests I can say that it makes me jump out of my skin every time!.....but only in the right eye! The same test in the left eye is a minor irritation by comparison...
Thanks for very quick informative video Dr Allen, it helped me to understand better during the eye examination. I’ve been having eye pain for past 3 days with positive 1st degree family hx of glaucoma (I’m a 22yo, male). The Dr used Goldmann Tonometer, OCT and did dilated eye examination too and luckily everything was fine.
I've had Glaucoma since birth. 32 years later, I have one eye (due to a detached retina). Just had a check up and pressure is 24 so they wanna do another surgery. Already have 3 shunts. Glaucoma is tricky for sure
I work as an Ophthalmic Technician, and the general workup I do for any glaucoma suspect who come in to see the ophthalmologist is pachymetry, intraocular pressure via applanation, then I send them to diagnostics for them to do OCT and Humphrey visual field.
Thank u i went to the eye doctor like two days ago and he told me that my optic nerve in both of my eyes are quite large so he thinks I might have glaucoma but he told us to go to a glaucoma specialist! I've also did the Puff machine when I was there
When I went to the doctor they said the same to me, I did 3 exams that he re-checked my eyes for has sure if I have or not glaucoma, but I never return there to the 4 test, so how your test was?

I'm 29 and I've had glaucoma for 20 years and I've had most of the tests. I last week I saw my glaucoma was specialist and she did the blue light tests on me and the OCT and so far glaucoma was stable. I'm so glad because I've been working hard to taking my eye drops.
I love your style, you described the tests in more detail than my eye doc, and I call him the miracle worker! Yes, I had cataract surgery in both eyes, and all my tests since show nearly perfect 20/20. I agree that the field of vision long test is like a boring video game. And all the other glaucoma tests I passed with flying colors. I have normal pressure and excellent optic nerve too. Before my cataract surgery I was always moderately far sighted. Is it true that if you are near sighted you are more prone to glaucoma? Both my dad and my brother are near sighted and are taking drops for eye pressure.
Thank you for the videos. My father has been diagnosed with glaucoma and the information you’ve given will assist me in my discussions with his doctor.
Originally just went in for contacts. First they did the air puff test, then said I needed to do the red dot test. (Felt like forever.) I haven't done in 4 years. Last time was diagnosed with floaters. Then asked if they could dialate my eyes. Did the bright light test. (Very painful for me.) So far, said my vision issues are from pressure because my eyes aren't draining like they're supposed to.. (Cloudy vision at night that's different from my regular night blindness, pain in my eyes, etc..) I appreciate this information. New tests stress me out, unless I have a basic idea of what to expect. My optician wants me to see a specialist he recommended for more thorough testing.
Very nice overview of glaucoma tests. Should also look into transpalpebral ( through eyelid) or scleral tonometry, it allows to measure IOP without touching the ocular surface and is considered a safer way as nothing is touching the eyeball directly. Overall, great video!
My 74 year old husband was just diagnosed with glaucoma in April and his eye dr sent him to a retina specialist yesterday and he verified the advanced glaucoma. Since his eye dr had already started him on the eye drops in April, his pressures were 9 & 13. The specialist mentioned “ lots of cupping” like you talked about here. He showed us the areas of nerve damage. Agreed that he stay on the eye drops and get tested every 3 months. I was wondering if him having had the radial keratotomy eye surgery years ago might have anything to do with the glaucoma? Thanks for making such informative videos 🙂
Thanks for the info; very informative! I just had my eyes checked and as usual I need to replace my eye glasses. The doctor said my eyes had high pressure and mentioned something about cataracts. I told the doctor that the eye specialist who I see annually is aware of my conditions as well as glaucoma that seems to run on my mother’s side of the family. I am at the age now (70) where cataracts affects a lot of people. I am due to see my specialist in a few weeks. Will let you know how it went.
@@solocare123 . I had my last visit a couple of months ago. My pressure was a little bit high at 21 but ok for now. . Doc said that my cataracts were not bad enough to operate at this time.
Hi Dr. Alan, I just watched your video and test used to diagnose someone with glaucoma. I have to be tested for it every year, because my biological father has glaucoma. I hate the test where they shoot the puff of air at your eye, because it always made me very jumpy. Keep up the excellent videos.
It is very interesting to hear that recent studies have suggested that the corneal thickness correlated with the 1) treatment responses and also helpful in 2). judging the risk of getting it or not, too. . ***Higher the corneal thickness , Lower the risk of getting it***. Very useful and interesting too.
Excellent series, thank you for doing these videos. My doctor knows his stuff, but Yeah the visual field test is by far my least favorite exam. I'm surprised that the NC Tonometer is so disliked; I don't mind it at all. The Goldman Tonometer is worse for me because of the light's intensity. I've had my doctor use a large magnifying lens with a goopy liquid to place directly on my eye, but I think he was examining the extents of the retina for a lattice issue, maybe he was looking at the cornea edges.
Back in the 80s, they dilated my pupils for a test, and I drove home in bright sunlight without sunglasses. It gave me a massive headache, and I had to spend the rest of the day in bed. I'll never forget it....it was awful.
Oh I know exactly what you mean. Some people seem to be more affected by dilation drops than others for sure. I had to get my eyes dilated almost every day for a good 2-3 years.
Almost 2weeks ago I had the samething, but what I found out was that if you've glaucoma you're not supposed dilate the eyes and with regular people who have their eyes tested their eyes go back to normal quickly, but with glaucoma it takes a while to go back to normal, and pressure, headache is common. Be careful of over the counter medications because it dilates the eyes as well.
I’ve seen most of these. I have early signs of glaucoma it’s basically just high eye pressure so I’m not diagnosed with it. Every year I have to do glaucoma testing and it’s a pain sometimes but it helps me get out of morning tests 😂 (I’m a senior in high school btw) Edit: I’ve had exams for about 6 years now
Hello Doctor, I have large optic nerve so I found out first time 2013 and 2016 and now 2023 my pressure is good all the test I did good and the visual field I did good also. What do that mean?
I have MMDD and stapyloma both eyes in my 50s. Last year my reading were in the teens and thus past summer was 24 to 26. Opthomologist said 'Intraocular htn" but put me on Latanoprost. He is a QUAK!! Says no glaucoma. SAW a retina specialist and scanned my eyes did mris and said YES glaucoma started me on Latanoprost and pressure in teens again no more eyeball pain. People ALWAYS get multiple opinions! I saw 20-60 last year and driving now I see 20-200. Thinking of suing
I have been diagnosed with ocular hypertension giving me a greater chance of developing glaucoma. I’ve been on latanaprost drops for couple of years to lower the pressure. I have been going to an ophthalmologist every year since my 20’s just for regular eye exams ( I’m 59 now) and roughly about 10 years ago my eye pressure started increasing. No family history of glaucoma. I see a specialist every six months and he performs all these tests. I am nervous as hell every time I go to see him. My previous eye doctor had a nice device to take the visual field test. It was like a 3D scuba dive goggle and I felt so much more comfortable taking that test using the goggles. I don’t know what the cuter will hold for my vision but I wish everyone would get regular eye exams just like they get physicals. Lot of eye diseases are discovered only after they have already been going on for awhile.
P.S. large optic nerves can be completely normal for some people. That was what I was told when I was younger. It’s just that doctors are cashing in on anything they can at this point. It’s just like anything else.
so glad to learn more about Glaucoma. Love your humour I think I had most of the tests you described and an ultrasound. Will you be making a video on treatments such as surgery? also curious if like me a patient has cataracts , glaucoma and an eye floater is it possible to "fix" in one procedure? I haven't got my results yet from last week so kinda wondering.
The electrodiagnostic testing would just tell if the optic nerve is unhealthy or damaged. I wouldnt specifically pinpoint narrow angles vs open angles.
I think I've had all of the tests except the last one you mentioned. Unfortunately my eyes were severely damaged (particularly my right) before I was diagnosed. I've got shunt in my right eye and have been on drops for almost 5 years. Dorzolimide HCl-timilol, Vyzulta and brimonidine tartrate. Finally with the addition of brimonidine I got my pressures consistently in the single digits. However my vision continues to decline. I've had 4 opthalmologists including one at Duke and I currently see two glaucoma specialists. I've gotten more explanation of the tests in two videos from you than from all of my doctors combined. Thanks. Oh I forgot about the neuro opthalmologist and the MRI
@@plana4703 It was found out that I have an enlarge Disk on my left eye and mild defect thank God it is unlike Glaucoma at this time. However Im still under observation and continue my medication due to high eye pressure on my left eyes 👀

Nice video. Just finished pre-op appointment for prk surgery. doctor says that my right optic nerve is abnormally large. no glaucoma, no high IOP but have to go back and do visual field test and establish a baseline. Thank you for this video. Now i know what to expect. thanks again.
pizzagirl procedure went well. Recovery was exactly what everyone experienced. Im 7 months out and only experience dry eye in the morning. No dry eyes during the day and no side effects at all. Im seeing 20/20. Im very happy with results. Thanks for asking.
My optometrist has me all checked up as I have a very strong family history of glaucoma. I have had a pachymeter test, it is an odd feeling getting it done. I get the air test done as well. I also get a photograph of my retina done after the field test! I have very thick corneas, over 600 they said.
With my last appointment I was told I have a damaged optic nerve and had to do the visual field test and was told that it could escalate into glaucoma. It’s scary cause I’m only 20. I already wear glasses and can tell my vision is getting worse so I’m even more scared now
It's okay to be scared so am I. I'm a glaucoma suspect and I've learned that only 10% of people with glaucoma actually go blind!! If you do turn out to have it. As long as you take proper care of it you'll be fine. I'm 21
Wearing glass is not solution for glaucoma..its all about steriod timing when u use it.please visit your doctor urgently.cause once optic nerve is once damaged, vision would not be reversible,
I actually work for a neurologist in Germany and we do have a VEP The way it works is a bit simple how to set it up. First u got to know where the optical nerve is located on your head witch always right in the back of your head almost apposite of your eyes then you'll place a active cable at the optical nerve in the back and a negative at your hairline starting point. Second you should cover up one eye and with the other ey you should focus on a screen where a chest play field will show. After a few run through there will be good result wich our neurologist will look at it and tell the patient what's going on with it
Your doctor should have recommended an appropriate follow up appointment. Some doctors may recommend 2 visits per year for very low or stable suspects while more strong suspects are seen more frequently, such as every 2-3 months. It's a very personal thing based on your eye health and risk. Perhaps you should call your doctor and ask when you need to be seen next.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you so much for your speedy reply, I certainly will call my doctor and express my concerns. I guess it must not be a big deal To him because I always visit without fail, once a year.
I have glaucoma an I have had the applanation tonomotry, visual field, schellen chart, OCT , and Genioscopy many times an I know I will have these for the rest of my life. OCT and visual field are the most difficult because my left has bad nystagmus so it's hard to get my optic nerve and its hard for me to look straight at light in the visual field. Sometimes it's hard to dilate my eyes and check my pressures because I have microcornea.
@@vitolibido Correct. Some people's eyes just run at a higher pressure and never develop glaucoma, but..once eye pressures get too high and remains high...lets say for example...above 30mmHg, then optic nerve damage occurs regardless.
I'm 44 & recently diagnosed with glaucoma after a recent eye exam. Waiting for a specialist to call me to set up appointments. With my insurance, every specialist visit is $50. If all these required tests are done on separate visits, this is going to be a very expensive experience. Gotta love genetics (mom also has it & so did my grandma & great grandma).
I’m 27 and I am a Glucoma patient. I like the eye care machine that measures the pressure coz it hardly touches the eye and it’s nice and straightforward. I don’t like the one where they put the blue light directly in front of my eyes as they are very light sensitive and it makes my nose tingle.
My pressures have never been very high. Seems to me the worst reading was 23. Pressures are now right around 13 or 14 with drops. Problem is, I have just a very small sliver of optic nerve left in my left eye. There were no symptoms but considerable damage. I have 20/20 vision, both eyes. The glaucoma was caught on a routine exam. They caught it in 2021, and my previous exam was in 2017. Moral of the story: Go to the eye doctor every year. Take your children to an ophthalmologist early. I mean by 6th grade. It's not just all about reading a school eye chart.

Nicolette Kissel an OCT SCAN is a 3D scan that shows more than anything else. A lab tests can show what may be causing glaucoma (root cause inflammation or infection elsewhere in the body) also gaining weight increases eye pressure. also sugar /insulin levels in the blood. another thing the liver may need to be cleaned so that more bike is produced to clean. glaucoma, cataracts etc can be a pre cursor to Alzheimer's & neurological disease. 1. lose weight 2.eat anti inflammatory diet cut out sugar & junk food 3. limit screen time /blue light 4. castor oil for eyes only NOT regular castor oil.
Why do you think that???? If they think you have or going to have they tell you. When she finished checking my eyes the first thing she asked do you have family with glaucoma? it looks like you're gonna get glaucoma. That was 3 years ago. This week I went and next week I'm going to get more test done and they said if it's I can start treatment 🤷♀️
I've had most of these tests and they are not very fun. I've got glaucoma and am afraid I will go blind. I'm terrified. I've tried several different eye drops and since most of them burn, they are running out of ones to try. (By the way, your kitty Zelda is very cute!) Thank you.
Bummer to hear about your experience with glaucoma and glaucoma testing. Perhaps SLt or another surgical treatment can help you lower the pressure without all the drops.
Hey, dear eye doctor! Love your videos so much, love how cheerfully you are speaking about such an unpleasant stuff as glaucoma. Can u please help me by replying a couple of questions? I had an eye examination several times (actually doing it once per month at this point). My eye pressure variates between 21 and 25. All the rest is ok. Eye tomography shown everything in green color, fields of view are perfect. Looking into this special lens with mirrors, the doctor said that the drainage system is clean and fine in both of my eyes. Everything is fine, but my eye pressure is 21-25! Why? Theres no visible reason for that. Doctors are sending me home with no meditation. They only say that i must check it twice a year. If the eye nerve starts to get harmed, they will start therapy. Neurologists also hadnt found any reason. But hey... Knowing that, if eye nerve is damaged, it is forever, i dont want to Just sit and wait for this process to begin. I want to find a reason why my eye pressure is so high with no visible reasons. What would you suggest?
Hello sir! Thank you for the information! I wonder how much the CCT of the eyes affect eye pressure? My opthalamalogist did a pachymetry test to see the reason is the thickness or not why i got more than 21. My right eye is 559 CCT and left 570 and he said we dont need to worry because I got thick cornea which can affect the pressure tests. I couldnt find a solid answer yet on the net :/ Have a nice day!
I was diagnosed with cataracts and glaucoma as a baby, so most of these tests I have done and go through every year when my eye check-up comes. I remember when I tried the periphial vision testing machine with the lights and it was fine, but I also get these bubbly flashes in my eyes all the time, so it messes with me and makes me question if that was the machine, or my eyes. I need to take another one because I think my peripheral is fading anyway. Though there is this one thing my doctor did do last time I was there where she put numbing medicine in my eye and pushed a cotton swab really hard against my eyelid. She said it was to check to see if any retinal tears were happening, and I would say: even with the numbing medication in my eyes, it hurt really bad. I even let out a loud verbal "ow" in response.
@@DoctorEyeHealth wow. You're a doctor l, and I used to work in health care. A lot of people don't know about eye meds like bepreve, xiidra and others. I'm not sure why they would get upset with that.

The visual field test apparatus maps whether or not you can perceive a light of a certain (random) intensity at a certain (random) position. Therefore, perhaps a couple of hundred points are needed to map out your entire visual field. I took the visual field test once, and on one of my eyes it had to be repeated (probably because of me clicking the button where there was no light flashing, some sort of false positive). It was sort of boring, but no big deal. It takes no longer than probably 5 minutes for each eye. What I coudn't find out was if the lights flash at a regular rate or at random times.
I am a technician and yes it's a very boring exam not only for the pt but also for us techs. Especially when the pt falls asleep 😂 . Anyways the lights are random some are dim others brighter and they show up all around the globe. My advice is do your best the first time so we don't have to keep repeating it. ☺️
@@lgcota yes, we have to constantly wake them up. So a 10 minute exam lasts almost 1 hr and at the end its not good bc they fell asleep, moved a lot or just clicked faster thinking it will finish faster
I’ve been a glaucoma suspect for a few years now, nad have some cupping. This last exam I was told they think I just have large optic nerves, but my pressure is higher than normal, I can feel eye pressure, and achiness, especially when they press in areas. I’m going back for a peripheral test. Any reason to be worried? I’m 41
I also am a glaucoma suspect. They told me I had a large optic nerve but no glaucoma. I get pain in my eyes everyday and my doctor said it was something else. I'm thinking migraines.

I do the Humphreys Visual Fields test once a year. It is very stressful because you have to stare at a light in the center of the globe and if you deviate, you have to repeat a lot. I absolutely dislike this test.
I'm very interested in all your videos and l wish one day too meet you in person for my eye problems thanks you really give a support to glacuma petiants and even to all eye cases
I belive i have seen almost all but one of these. I have lost 75% of my right eye before my 45 bday. Spent a long time in eye dr. officese. I wish they had the one that can dietect for the future that would have help me alot! I can still see to drive n work and walk, so iam good for now. Something i have noticed that i seem to have problems in waves. i could go 6 months no problems, then have to spend weeks trying to get the pressure back down. Once the vision is gone its gone. So take it seriously people!!!! Thank You
Thank you for this video and explaining everything. Doctors do not explain anything that well. As far as The visual field test... it is torture for me. They never cover the opposite eye the correct way. Now its hard to use the one eye. I hope they aren’t making any decisions from that test. It is the worst!
I was recently diagnosed with glaucoma and cataract in my right eye. My eye specialist recommended surgery for the cataract. Do you think it's advisable and beneficial in terms of getting better vision?
Thank you for so much explanation. I took the test, but I have attention defecit, does this effect the diagnosis? I am older and after the test had bletherplasty done. I see much better now and no request for retest from the doctors. should I be concerned.
I've had glaucoma for 40 years, eye drops every day, check ups, had about 6 operations. Im now completely blind in my right eye, caused by an infection.
I had recently saw an ophthalmologist for Glaucoma testing. I did all the tests you mention except the las two. I agree the visual field test is the worst! I had repeat it twice cause my mind and my phone was a distraction! I didn't have glaucoma but I have to come in for regular eye exams to keep checking my board line eye pressure. Is there a home eye pressure machine so I check it at home like blood pressure?
