Watch how I glaze and fire these two giant pots. One was made with 50lbs of clay and the other with 62lbs! I hope you enjoy watching the process.

Ceramics is one of the few art forms that you have really no idea what will happen once it goes into the kiln! I have found over the years that the excitment and dissapointment kind of goes hand in hand and it really is the lap of the kiln gods lol!

Yes it is the full range of emotions al at the same time. But in the end I am never fully crushed because it’s just clay and I can make another pot. Haha. Not to say I haven’t been temporarily distraught before.

Gorgeous pots! SO glad you started making these types of videos, where you show the piece through it's entire process. That suspense only gets worst the closer to opening that door. Haha! Some times the glazes don't do exactly what we wanted to do, but some of those "let downs" eventually grow on you and they become your favorite pot. Can't wait to see more of these videos!

Great video and beautiful pots. You are too funny. I do the same thing: e.g. try a glaze that I've only tried a few times if any. Always experimenting which is the fun of it.

A kiln opening is like Schrodinger’s pottery. Until you open the door, the pots are both perfect and terrible at the same time.

Oh, wow! They are fawesome!! Matt do you think the variation is different because of the location in the kiln? You know, the cup on the bottom of the kiln? They are gorgeous! Congratulations! 😃

The glaze wasn’t applied the same and the atmosphere in the kiln changes with so much open space. Thanks so much

Like how the handles lean into the bigger pot, but the smaller is a stunner. You prefer gas?

Can you add more glaze to create more than what you expected at a smaller cone?
@MatthewKellyPottery

Adding additional glaze and re-firing usually doesn’t work out in my experience.

Only one burner on that kiln ?, how do you control reduction, do you have multiple thermocouple and oxygen sensors ? Or do you use cones and nothing else.
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 5 лет назад
4 burners and I gauge the reduction by the flame that shoots out the front peep hole controlled by a damper and the pressure of the burners. I gauge when to start reduction and peak temp by cones only.

Hey Matthew, I really enjoy your videos, and work. (The urns are beautiful). I can really relate to you and appreciate the time you take to record them and the gift of yourself that you share. Well done! I'm just getting back to pottery after many years, and studying and practicing on the wheel. Harder than it looks...but your technique is helpful to watch. Cheers!

Matthew, do you spray glaze smaller pots too?
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 5 лет назад
Yes I spray glaze on just about all of my pots. Most of the time I don’t spray the whole piece but some parts of just about every pot.
@moosibou

Did you leave holes in the bottoms of those. It appeared you had a hole in the bottom of the small one when you picked it up? Is that for drainage so they can be displayed outside?
@MatthewKellyPottery
@MatthewKellyPottery 5 лет назад
Yes I put holes in the bottoms of my large pots so they can be used as garden pots. You guessed it!
