In response to a lot of other artists asking me about my approach to glazing I've produced a short video offering some explanation and advice.
Please note this is not a step-by-step instructional video but rather an explanation of how to glaze in oils.
I'm a professional artist who also teaches, not a full-time RU-vidr, so please accept this as a simple and short video that, I very much hope, you'll find interesting and useful.
The sounds may be a bit low too, so please turn up the volume.
Do drop a comment if you have any questions and a Like/Share will really help me, and others to see this. Remember to Subscribe if you've not already.
I don't publish videos every week but I am planning to add more in the coming months. More resources, ways to follow my work and get in touch below.

Wonderful tips. I'm transitioning from a watercolor painter to oils. I can use all the help I can get! I wish you taught classes near me. You explain things so clearly. Thank you.

It’s a beautiful painting. The video would be much more educational and helpful to aspiring young artists if he actually show the ingredients and the mixture before he just dab it on canvas. Really doesn’t help you understand how to do glazing properly because you need to know how to mix it Proportions of medium grade paint. These are questions that he doesn’t even come close to answering.

I wish I could say something good , but I think you just like to here yourself talk, you could have said everything you said in a few sentences , you spent the whole video talking. If you just did and let people see it , no explanation is needed. Besides you need to learn how to do it before you try to teach it, dont really think you have a full grasp of the concept, your painting looked the same before as it did after.

You know it amazes me just how rude some people can be in comments. But I guess that’s what it’s like these days. You’re obviously an expert so I can’t possibly imagine why you bothered to even watch my video.

Q; Are you making the glaze with the original mixture of paint on your pallet?
@NialAdams
@NialAdams 3 года назад
Yes. I’m picking up raw paint on my palette. It’s standard oil paint but good quality, as you want a paint with strong pigmentation. Then you can work with very fine transparent glazes. The paint is thinned using W&N Liquin. Or you can use a classical mix of oil and turps.

Thank you Nial this is very helpful. I have been interested in glazing for a long time. How long does it take for each layer to dry before you apply another layer?
@NialAdams
@NialAdams 3 года назад
My pleasure Kay. Drying time for each layer will depend upon a number of factors: the medium you choose, how thickly you glaze, how much paint you use (which contains oil) and also external factors, like how warm your studio space is. In short, ensure the surface feels fully dry before glazing. This will avoid the risk of dissolving the layer below. N

What transparent colours did you use for the glazing please???
@NialAdams
@NialAdams 3 года назад
For glazing I use Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Indian Yellow, as well as a few others like Transparent Oxide Red, VanDyke Brown, etc. N 🎨

@@NialAdams I am curious what color green you used to glaze the bottom area? I love the piece!
@NialAdams
@NialAdams Год назад
@@pjjmsn the green would have been produced by Ultramarine Blue and Indian Yellow. I always tend to mix my greens. But you could also use Pthalo Green toned down with Transparent Oxide Red. N

@@NialAdams Thanks Niel! As it would have it, I just bought some indian yellow a couple of days ago but haven't used it yet. I am looking forward to using it in both mixed greens and on it's own. It kind of looks a little like yellow ochre on the tube but I assume it is a lot brighter and more powerful. I just subscribed. Great work!

Hello Nial, Do you teach online or do you have any instruction dvd ? Your work is very Turner-ish.
@NialAdams
@NialAdams 3 года назад
Mark, sorry for the very slow reply! Unfortunately I don’t. I have tried teaching online (via Zoom) and it doesn’t really work. Just too hard to see all those small subtleties when mixing colours, etc.

It's very Turner-ish, beautiful, is this what Turner did with his paintings? His stuff never strikes me as alla prima
@NialAdams
@NialAdams 2 года назад
Yes Daniel, Turner tended to work on a light canvas, adding successive darks, just as he would have worked in Watercolour. Layers of glazes would then increase the darks and shift the colours. Lighter elements were then added, sometimes called a Scumble. This is a long and layered way of creating an oil painting. The very opposite to Alla Prima. Well spotted!
