In this video I will show you how to glaze to your oil paintings. Some painters view glazing as a bit of a mystery - it isn't! In this video I show you how to do it on two paintings. The technique is quite simply adding a colour mixed with oil to a dry painting.

Is this actually glazing? I always thought of glazing as a very transparent layer that's tinting the color like a photo filter, so almost no color. I feel like what you did here is simply painting the final layer of oil paints, although you wiped off quite a lot of the paint which kind of makes it a non-standard step. In any case I appreciate the video as I was very inspired and learnt some things. You are a way more competent painter than I am, so I'm in no way trying to correct or criticize you, these are just my thoughts.

Agree N R! Don't worry about the complainers a BEAN, Stuart. Unlike most people, you enunciate. If somebody is that persnickety/panicked about hearing crisp consonants, they are the ones who should do something, namely turn down the volume at their end.

I had a wonderful art teacher in high school. He was a bit weird but I learned so much from him. He enter two of my junior year pieces in the state exhibitions. One took 2nd prize and the the other took 1st. Because I was in school and they were entered in a state contest, they became property of the state when I won. I did get the trophy and the ribbons. The one thing I still use to this day, I graduated before the normal age in 1967, is he told me when I was not sure of the color or balance of a painting, drawing or whatever I was working on to turn it upside down. Stand back and look at it and you will see immediately what is not correct or out of sorts. It also gives you proportions on objects. That is such a priceless wonderful tool that I have used for 55 years. Just a suggestion because I know you are the teacher but it is a tool that always worked for me. I had that teacher for 3 years and every time I paint a painting or draw a picture I turn it upside down to check it and hear him telling me, "you can now see your mistakes or victories." I could not afford to go to art school so I have always been more than appreciative of those who took the time to teach me some of what they knew. You are now one of those respected people. Thank you again.

Great video as always, Stuart! Re: warping, my college art instructor suggested we first coat the back of the board with gesso. That way, it greatly reduced the chance of warping. It offsets the curl that would normally occur without doing this first. Just a suggestion. It does work. I've done it many times. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. BTW, your skies are amazing!!!

I’m brand new to oil painting and think of glazing as applying a filter similar to photo editing options on Instagram. Sometimes you don’t want a glaze. Sometimes you do and it really adds so much to the original. Like fine tuning. Another great video full of encouragement thank you!

to avoid getting trapped into seeing the detail, years ago I made a frame of proportionate size to the canvas, that had a sheet of acetate with acrylic gel smeared over it. so the view of the landscape was reduced to tonal blocks, kind of a similar effect to looking through distorted glass.

Wow, I thought 'glazing' was going to be something quite difficult...turned out to be the opposite! Thank you for teaching. Waiting for pay day to buy oil paints and then I will be following (painting) along with you and hopefully join you this year sometime (2021). Are you in southern France? I was in Southern Bordeaux in 2005 for a friends wedding. Now I'm going on to your 'Painting Water' video.

When you are putting on the glaze, it gives a more brilliant colour to the painting. One cannot get that when painting with acrylics. So I am seriously thinking of going into oils soon. Thank you for posting. Enjoyed watching you paint. Thank you again.

I started in oils, way back when (before acrylics was ever even thought of!) - then in college tried acrylics when they first came out - then to watercolor, which was my favorite for years and years - then to acrylics for several years now - but I too am going to start doing some oils again. There are just some things you can do with oils that no other mediums accommodate! Happy painting!

Loved the demo. Listening to you chat is so relaxing...amazing paintings you produce. Stuart have you ever heard of someone using baby oil with their oil paints rather than the norm? I dont have experience with oils yet but I really think that your style of painting would suit me....my memory is also somewhat like yours....and I tend to be an intuitive person..my acrylics come out better when I paint this way (intuitively rather than following demos step by step)...I'm 53 and have only been painting a year this coming may. I try to paint every day...just smaller canvases...much smaller!! Oh and I'm not sure I'm very good either! But it makes me happy and helps me deal with chronic pain.

Before glazing do you spray your dried painting with a retouch varnish? Or once dry will the glaze be easy to wipe off and not damage underneath layer because of the linseed oil?
@StuartDavies
@StuartDavies 4 года назад
No, paint over varnish isn't a good idea. Varnish is made to give paintings an overall gloss and to protect the paint from pollution. It's also made so it can be easily removed for cleaning.
