Glee introduced me to sooo many broadway songs. And I think Kurt's voice was truly made for broadway. Love this performance. His singing was so effortless. Chris Colfer should make a broadway cover album.
June Yamagata Exactly the same for me. I knew about the most popular Broadway musicals but thanks to Glee I learned a lot more! I just happened to see that exact song on the 2007 Tony Awards and it gave me chills, just like Kurt did it.
Anybody remember "hello I'm Kurt Hummel and I'll be auditioning for the role of kicker ". Lol. Who wants to bet that he's thinking about Blaine when singing this song.
Karin Porter Well, sure he is! The song is about being afraid of being vulnerable, and it was just the same for him with his relationship with Blaine! :)
still think is crazy how he KILLED his first audition and even Carmen said it was great, but he didn't get into NYADA. While Rachel choke and messed up his audition, cried and begged to her, but she did got in. That I'll never forgive. Chris made me cry with this song btw
Skytho i have to disagree. i thought not the boy next door was perfect for kurt!!! he lived in rachel’s shadow for a long time and that song for me felt like he might be waking up and realizing that he is more than just a shadow or a voice in the background.
Skytho Yeah from Carmen’s eyes it must’ve seemed like a kind of coverup. I’m still pretty bitter he didn’t get in though, Not the boy next door is MY favorite Kurt performance. That and Rose’s Turn
Beautiful slap in the face from Kurt here to Carmen - "Oh you didn't think I had depth? Bitch, let me sing one of the three songs you mentioned you hear too many times and let me SLAY IT better than anyone you've ever heard"
If the plots were different and kurt got in with his original song, they would have just used this song for another plot point, probably with one of the relationships. It’s way to good of a song not to use in glee and I’m sure there would have been plenty of other opportunities
@@phoenix5054 doesn't matter. It was still strong enough for him to get in, especially with Carmen complimenting him after it. The plotline just didn't make sense.
It's even better if you remember the fact that Carmen said before Kurt's first audition that she heard "being alive" way to much during her castings for NYADA just like " music of the night" . And yet Kurt managed it to put in so much emotion that he got accepted at NYADA. Definetly one of the best solos in the whole show!
I mean, she ain’t wrong. No offense to NPH but irl, I feel there are two voices that have proven to be meant for Being Alive; Dean Jones and Raul Esparza. Kurt taking on the song is a BOLD move when this show is canonically set after those two amazing portrayals of Bobby. In the show, he isn’t trying to be Bobby, so I accept that he won’t have the same depth, so this performance was amazing for what it was, which is a great audition for a school.
Love this performance, but doesn’t this give off a weird message? He auditions for NYADA with “Not the Boy Next Door” because it’s something fresh, original, and true to Kurt. And he doesn’t get in. But then he sings this song “Being Alive” even though Carmen Tipadeaux said this and his original audition, Music Of the Night, song were the most common and overdone songs. And Kurt gets accepted.
Just shows that Carmen didn’t know what she was talking about. The song Not The Boy Next Door isn’t a emotional song, and if that’s what she used to decide to reject Kurt then she should have requested to hear him sing an emotional song before rejecting him. Kurt gave TWO amazing auditions. Rachel choked on one, and got in on a glee club performance? How is that fair? (sorry for the rant).
@@censored2129 The show doesn't really claim that it's fair, it's more Rachel's will and drive and complete lack of giving up is what drove Carmen to giving her that second chance. Had Kurt done the same thing after he didn't get in, perhaps she would've done this. But she DOES give him a second chance, and he gets in. She may not really know what shes talking about in a real sense, but it's sensicle
Said it before, I'll say it again, again and again his vibrato gives me goosebumps. The fullness, richness of his highs and lows are hard to comprehend let alone duplicate. BEAUTIFUL!
This is the best performance of this song that I have ever seen or heard. He just gets to you. Inside your heart. Wow! If I was a Broadway director, I'd star Chris in a big musical!
I agree. Patti Lupone's version is vocally one of the best performances I've heard of anything ever, LOL, and Neil Patrick Harris' version is amazing, but this is still my favorite. He really nailed it.
I have said it once a few years ago and I will say it again his performance was amazing here I was literally shaking and crying in my seat during this performance it was just so beautiful and when he hit the high note I just wow so many memories for this! Chris is not only attractive and an adorable little bean but he is so very talented
He killed this! I’m glad he got to sing this because the emotion that Chris gave makes me burst out crying, but let’s be real...he should’ve been accepted into NYADA with the first audition.
this is by far one of if not his best performance on the whole show, he doesn't sing in his head voice which is the one that people make fun of, he uses his chest voice which I love. such an underrated performance.
Let me get this straight...Carmen said in Choke that this was one of the oversung NYADA auditioned songs then Kurt sang and performed something original with Not The Boy Next Door from the Boy From Oz...and THIS is what gets him in?
Lexi Hansen cause he was showing a lot of emotion and singing how he really felt here and in the boy next door he focused too much on the whole pizazz of the performance BUT HE SLAYED BOTH PERFORMANCES HONESTLY
Yeah, Ik...It's just funny considering that he got in with one of the claimed "Over Auditioned" songs. Both performances are brilliant and I he deserved getting in. Just a little slice of irony.
Lexi Hansen I think the point was that she finally found someone who understood the meaning of the song and could do it justice, instead of just singing it for its wow factor.
I was just watching the latest episode of Drag Race and Chris is a judge. It made me nostalgic so I had to rewatch this performance (for the 100th time). He's amazing.
I loved when Chris Colfer sings really powerful voice of his performance "Being Alive" it kills me with that song it is really amazing that was and i loved it so so much you are a superstar Chris Colfer and i love you it doesn't matter what you are and i think you are very special ? And that was fantastic performance i never seen ? And someday Chris Colfer and i will do a duet together with that song Being Alive i really love that !!!
Beautiful 2:45...voice rasping a little, eyes glistening with the unshed tears that have collected throught the song, finally completely rolling back into his head, shutting as if the world didnt exist. Long note, roaring applause, suddenly he is back, scared, shy, emotional, raw, exposed, the whole room full of strangers who root for him. He licks his lips, his breathing quivers, he smiles self consciously, and a single tear rolls down his soft, alabaster cheek. This, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the reasons why Kurt hauntigly beautiful, sublime even 😍😍😍
This is by far my favourite version of Being Alive out there and it is in my Top 3 favourite Glee songs. The vocals are amazing and the performance is powerful. I can't just listen to it once and then leave I have to keep listening. I love Kurt in Glee so much and I love Chris Colfer. I cannot get over how brilliant this song is. Phenomenal.
Someone to hold you too close, Someone to hurt you too deep, Someone to sit in your chair, To ruin your sleep. Someone to need you too much, Someone to know you too well, Someone to pull you up short To put you through hell. Someone you have to let in, Someone whose feelings you spare, Someone who, like it or not, Will want you to share A little, a lot.Someone to crowd you with love, Someone to force you to care, Someone to make you come through, Who'll always be there, As frightened as you of being alive, Being alive, Being alive, Being alive. Somebody, hold me too close, Somebody, hurt me too deep, Somebody, sit in my chair And ruin my sleep And make me aware Of being alive, Being alive. Somebody, need me too much, Somebody, know me too well, Somebody, pull me up short And put me through hell And give me support For being alive, Make me alive, Make me alive, Make me confused, Mock me with praise, Let me be used, Vary my days. But alone is alone, not alive. Somebody, crowd me with love, Somebody, force me to care, Somebody, let me come through, I'll always be there, As frightened as you, To help us survive Being alive, Being alive, Being alive!

Have never posted on here before but if Chris is reading I wanted to say thankyou for your beautiful voice and performances which often moved me to tears. It is a great shame I think that we no longer hear your exquiste voice. Much sadness has passed from this show, but I do hope to see and hear you perform again.
He is a great voice, generally I see comments about Glee, that is a TV show for women or gay people, I don't agree, and it makes me angry! I'm 100% straight but I really enjoy the show because I like music, and I like listen to talented people who can sing great! and I'm disappointed about some videos or else, if we are here we are fan of glee and sexuality or gender we don't care about this just we enjoy great performances!
Découverte grâce à Glee et la performance de Chris Colfer m'a fait pleurer. J'ai toujours des frissons aujourd'hui. C'est devenu une de mes chansons préférés. Elle est dans la PLAYLIST DE MA VIE.
So fantastic! He's like a young Neil Patrick Harris. Maybe even did it better. While many have done this song well, Chris' voice is so pure in a way that even Bernadette didn't do. Vocally, this guy is crisp and solid. Not a single warble.
It was good. It felt a little safe. I think it was the arrangement. I wish he'd let loose a little more. I love his C.C.'s voice. I think he's way talented. I just wanted more.
my friend and i saw that being alive was a song our choir teacher bought for us, and i said “i love being alive. there are so many versions idk which i like best.” she said “why do i feel like they sang this on glee?” i said “probably because they did.”
The fact that Carmen said she heard this song a lot when Kurt first auditioned but this was the song that got him in to NYADA is such crap. Amazing song though!!
I first encountered this performance when a friend of mine was playing it on his phone. I was blown away by the sheer beauty and intensity of the voice as well as the power of the song. Later I've heard versions from other performances of "Company" and they were ruined for me by the dialogue the performer had to speak during the song. Colfer wisely cut out all the jabber and what emerged is pure soul.

Shannon Williams meee!! My mom was about to forward through Adam Driver singing it, & I had to stop the movie & pull this up to show her! I had almost forgotten this beautifully stunning performance. Honestly one of the top songs they ever did on glee, & it really demonstrates that Kurt was nearly equal with Rachel in regards to their talent. & the scene from before where she helps him pick this song & gives him encouragement demonstrates how far her character came in 4 seasons!!
