The way she was able to capture Santana's pain during this performance while killing it with her vocals and dancing really shows how fucking talented she is. Miss you Naya :'(
All of the singing scenes in Glee are lip synced because of the audio and where they did these scenes. It also helps the actors focus on their emotions and routine. If it was live and not lip synced the actors would have to focus on too many things at once.
@@audreymattson1347 it’s hard nevertheless pretending to sing and making it look so seamless while doing choreography and keeping facial expressions on point
That’s awesome how Mercedes has Santana’s back here. She completely froze before her turn to sing and Mercedes simply sang it for her. Class act and true friend!
naya’s acting in this scene doesn’t get enough credits. the way she poured all that she got in this scene is just mind blowing. she was everything that everytime i watch this scene, it feels like someone reached through the screen and squeezed my heart. thank you naya for fighting for brittana storyline to be taken more seriously than just a running joke. 6 years later and they’re one of the first lgbtq+ characters to get married on national tv. thank you for making people feel seen. you will never be forgotten. rest easy, angel.
there's so much emotions behind her performance, she truely deserves more than all the praise. I remember how emotional i was the first time watching this storyline, her story because she brought so much life and passion to the character
I can’t believe she’s gone, through her portrayal of Santana she helped me and so many others come to terms with their identity. We’ll never forget you Naya, rest in peace angel
You should check out Step Up: High Water... it's a RU-vid Original.. I just got done watching some scenes from there, and then I came here.. so sad but at least we will always have these moments to revisit.
Literally the best scene of the entirety of glee. You can see Santana is checked out throughout the whole performance to the point where there’s the pause and Mercedes has to keep going even thought it was supposed to be Santana’s opening part. Then the whole time she’s moving robotically as if she’s trying to think about the steps and not how she’s feeling. She’s so close to crying during the song that even Brittney notices and you can see how hurt they both are.
Great analysis! This show was so detailed and ground breaking that I think that it will be used as a case study for student actors, directors, choreographers, screen writers and musicians in the future.
@@yolandamedina7145 yes, I see that now after you pointed it out. But, during the long pause at 2:11, how do we know that Santana was supposed to start singing at that point but couldn't?
@@msadventure49 Well, it shows in the exchange of glances between Mercedes and Santana, obviously she noticed that she was not feeling well and decided to continue with the song until Santana felt "good" to continue.
I don't think Santana was supposed to sing when Mercedes started after the pause. Santana was leading Someone Like You pretty much exclusively. The pause was to add dramatic tension.
“The whole school already knows, and you know what ? They don’t care “ that’s such a selfish thing to say.... whatever happens around you no one can take away your right to come out at your own terms and time
yeap. and it was also selfish of santana to use her insecurities as an excuse to bully and torment so many students in the school for 3 fucking years. If you are gay and wanna keep it a secret then that's find. but the moment you try and use your sexuality as an excuse to bully other people, then you are in the wrong.
@@icandothisallday986 She was not using her sexuality as an excuse. There were plenty of other things Finn could have pointed out but he chose to use her sexuality as an insult which it should never be. At the end of the day, everyone should be able to come out on their own terms no matter what. Coming out it very mentally challenging and Finn pretty much forced Santana out of the closet which meant she had to deal with homophobia, even from her own grandmother. He then played a savior role and never apologized for it but used the excuse that no one would care which wasn’t true at all, and there was no way for him to know what Santana was experiencing. While there was no excuse for what Santana said to Finn, he was an asshole for outing her like that and deserved that slap.
it just hurts thinking that Naya was probably imagining her trip as a peaceful getaway with her son and that after it, she’d continue to watch him grow as a person. Mannnnn life is so random and unexpected-another reason why we should value the things and people we already have. Rest In Paradise Naya :( 🕊🤍
@@stev6963 probably was since naya did actualy slap cory, it was meant to be a stage slap but in the last moment they told naya to go for it to have real reactions

@@S6nkissed right mr shue never cared that finn outed Santana he doesn't care when finn beats up puck but if someone hurts his favorite he suspends them 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@S6nkissed I feel like figgins wasn't fully informed what went on and Mr schue just told him santana slapped him. I know this may sound bad but he always seemed to hate anyone who wasn't straight, cis or white because he pushed Mercedes to the back of the group and didn't stick up for Kurt when he was being bullied.... And he tried to suspend people for not doing what he wanted them to do
Kacy Lorraine The way I wanted to slap him too. Idc how mean (and brutally honest) Santana was, Finn definitely was worse and the show played him off as a hero.
@@JayVu-ye9us Interesting. I took it as Santana being unable to feel safe or in control of her life except when she's performing. Wen there was a break in the song, she started to get upset; and it's mirrored at the end, when as soon as she's done singing, she heads towards Finn to confront him.
Kurt looks so hurt, his brother did one of the worst things you can do to a closeted gay and is trying to justify it by saying “no one cares”. I hated Finn since season one, but damn this storyline made me not care about any of his story arch. Also, before people say things: obviously this isn’t directed towards Cory. Tbh he did the role great, it’s just that his character is a pos
This performance is immaculate. Naya was truly a force to be reckoned with. Her performance as Santana meant so much to me growing up. It's unbelievable she's gone :(
Looking back at this show really makes me realize how terrible Rachel and Finn were to pretty much everyone in Glee Club. Unless there was some big issue to be sorted out, they were really selfish and naive people.
I remember back when this came out, even though it was in good intention on Finn's part,he was literally forcing Santana out of the closet and it didn't sit well with many fans.
i mean while Finn shouldn't have outed her, he did it because she was constantly bullying him and harassing him ENDLESSLY. Finn is largely innocent in this santana/finn fight, until the very end when he fucked up majorly.
Mercedes, Santana and Britney were the best performers together, the blended and complemented each other so well. I think they could have been a girl group in a spin off, had we not lost Naya too soon.
Finn should of had more consequences for what he did. That’s the absolute worst thing you could ever do to a closeted person and it’s unacceptable. I hate how they thrust brushed passed it later one and made them be friends again so quickly. He definitely deserved that slap in my opinion.
omg stop. while I can understand coming out may be difficult, it's way less difficult in this current world. Bullying is unacceptable, but telling someones sexual orientation is not illegal
I just love how burt was included in this because he knows how to support lgbt kids and how hes willing to help talk to her parents just makes him one of the best tv dads
Ik she portrayed the struggle really good. Especially cuz our community is very traditional and anti-lgbtq. Hopefully someone was able to relate to her character:)
Ok everyone, please just admit that he deserved that slap. Sure, she bullies people but she doesn’t do things that are fully permanent. But he actually outed her, and she can never, ever, get that back. I know it seems harsh, but Santana truely was right to slap Finn.
Facts. Idc how mean and blunt Santana was, Finn was always worse and he never had to face consequences. He shouted that to the entire hallway that actually had a lot of people in it; and then played it off like he did her a favor.
True no-one not even Rachel would be as successful as she was Santana pushed everyone to constantly prove her wrong no-one would be as famous if it were not for Santana she always pushed people plus Santana always was spitting facts maybe not in the nicest way but facts nonetheless
Maybe the lesson here is to not bully anyone. Because no one is perfect, and if the victim finds out a dark secret you have, they can and will use it against you. When it happened to me, I would have done anything or given anything to get the bullies to stop. I would have forced them out of the closet. I would have told everyone everything. "Steve got molested in summer camp." Just leave people alone and you won't have to worry about it. But if you go after people, don't complain when they push back. I'm sorry the actress died, but the character deserved way more than this.
@@guyfriendly8984 ur right. But saying she deserved to be outed is wrong. Even somebody like Santana doesn't deserve to be. Look what karofsky did to kurt. And yet kurt still didnt out him. But finn doesnt really have an excuse. Yes Santana really chewed him up this episode, but that doesnt make finn blameless by any means.
@@__HAVOK3___ No, they are not. Neither Naya nor Santana did anything to accomplish legendary status in "the LGBTQ community." Once again, they are both iconic, and no more than that.
She was literally my Favorite character on Glee. Loved her as a person. She did the ultimate sacrifice to save her child. And for that God will welcome you with open arms. Taken to soon.
this will always be my favorite piece that ever aired on glee. the arrangement, choreography, and cinematography are all astounding on their own as a complete package, but the narrative context and emotional tone of the performance adds to its power in such a special way. the shot at 2:09 where the song pauses, the way the camera follows santana from 2:53 on, the harmonies and choreography that come in with the change at 3:30... it's all so intimate and empathetic, and it treats santana's story the way it should be: with care.
Oh heavens, you are so correct and insightful in every way. Thank you for putting it so perfectly. I came here in hopes to find this kind of critical commentary so once again thank you so much.
Santana poured her heart into this performance!! You can see the pain on her face! Mercedes gives her the side eye like, you ok girl?? Great performance Naya! R.I.P.
I take solace knowing that complete strangers all came here to collectively mourn someone we love. I hope everyone watching is able to find peace. We love you Naya, always.
While this scene is heartbreaking, the anecdote about Naya actually slapping Cory, on the request of the directors, instead of just stage slapping him without Cory knowing always makes me giggle. Especially how Kevin was behind him urging Naya on like a lil "instigator"... God i love this cast
Naya’s acting here is brilliant, she somehow manages to convey so much emotion and at the same time seem so numb, robotic and almost in shock. Also, the moment at the beginning where she is frozen and Mercedes sings what appears to have supposed to have been Santana’s part is great. I wish we got to see more of their friendship and more duets the two of them, their voices work so well together. And of course the part at 2:55, Brittana being the sweetest (as always). Hands down one of the best scenes in the entire show.
I had to deal with being outed to my parents. When they talked to me about it I felt exactly like Santana in this scene. Naya’s portrayal of Santana really helped me feel normal and possibly saved my life. She was a beautiful soul and I’m gonna miss her
i feel like the only reason they lost because it wouldnt fit in the main storyline of everything being about rachel and finn but they the TT could have won and they could have blocked it out the story line like do with other stuff but it would have caused a loop whole with the fact the new directions had to win nationals this season but the trouble tones losing is completely illogical
Easily the best mash up and one of the best performances of the whole series. It shows real talent from the girls and their voices made the difference. Naya portrayed Santana with such a heart, representing all of us who where dealing with a similar situation. I will never forget it. Thank you Naya, we'll miss you.
damn that's an underrated opinion? whether she was bullying him or not she always said it to his face at least. he outed her to everyone and he did it on purpose. if he had been the bigger person rather than stooping to her level than I'd feel bad about the slap but he didnt.
Keeley Dillon So she can bully everyone and that’s fine, but the minute she gets something back, she gets to slap people? Y’all are twisted. I don’t care that he outed her, she had it coming by how she treated him.
Heather Morris kills it as always with her dancing and Naya Rivera I could have listened to her vocals all day long. Incredibly talented. Both of them.
Finn outing Santana was the thing that scared me to come out. I was so afraid of it happening that after this episode aired, I wrote a coming out letter to my mom. Nobody should ever be outed, regardless of whether they've been mean to you or not. That's territory you don't cross into. The emotion Naya brought forth in this whole segment is just so powerful and heartbreaking. But so, so well done. She was such a powerhouse of talent.
I know Santana could be a bitch but she didn't deserve to be publicly outed like that and her parents should have heard it from her when she was ready, not on a slanderous advert.
“Don’t forget me, I beg.” You can feel the urgency in her voice, which makes this recent news all the more heart wrenching. Naya, we’ll never forget you. Say hi to Cory for us ❤️
Finn definitely deserved it. It was such a shitty thing for him to try undermine how horrible what he did was by saying no one cared. What does it matter if no one cares? Coming out was supposed to be Santana’s moment, not Finn’s. And that video was just humiliating for Santana.
yeah well thats what happens when you endlessly abuse somebody whos done nothing but be nice and supporting towards you, but her abuse is fine bc shes a girl i guess.
@@minaspetpenguin910 neither of them deserved what happened, but in comparison Finn did litterally nothing at all and Santanna did more than little. She deserved it more than him
@@heddalee What the hell is that supposed to mean? Who in their right mind measures someone's talent by the way their upper lip moves? This is the dumbest comment I've ever come across i stg
@@Asdf__. It's more about the fact (and my comment wasn't direct about this, so I'll spell it out for you, even though it's clearly there) that no one anywhere, ever, on any planet, has had an upper lip that looked so non-human, so non-human in fact that it cannot move even when someone is emoting. I guess that's what happens when you LITERALLY choose to LITERALLY trade away part of your talent, in order to plastic smurgery your face into someone that is as unreal in looks as it is in fact. And yes, whether it upsets you deeply or not, being able to EMOTE is part of an actress' talent, and what I see here is an actress who decided to limit how much she can emote. Zing! Easy-peasy.
@@heddalee I couldn't tell u whether or not she actually got lip fillers/stuff done to her face(she hasn't confirmed it) however regardless of that she's still an incredible actor that is able to convey many complex emotions as seen on glee(e.g. heartbreak, anger, confusion etc) Thus showing how her 'lack of upper lip movement' doesn't prevent her ability to emote. Also sometimes less is more so I don't think u necessarily have to utilise your whole face during scenes(I'm not an actor but just a thought).
Kurt looked hurt like why would he out somebody knowing how hard it was for me and Finn saying nobody cares doesn’t make it better he forced her to come out on his terms not hers
I don't think he shows any particular emotion. He's simply watching. His eyes move from one to the other, hammering the point home that Kurt has some stake in this, but his face is fully neutral (which is more in keeping with his wait-and-see personality).
This is the best performance on Glee. Naya's and Amber's talent are responsible for that. I'm so glad she was on Glee ready to breakdown stereotypes and make weirdos like me dance and sing happy now and always. I hope you vibe higher Naya, RIP.
I consider this the best performance of the series, by anyone, bar none. The arrangement is sheer genius (No matter how many times I watch it, the transition into the chorus of "Someone Like You" 3:29 gives me goosebumps every time!). The performance is flawless across the board. And Naya sang it like she'd never sing again... the world is so much poorer without her in it. Safe travels, magnificent human
The fact that one of the people up to win governor tried to use anti-lgbt as a way to win is messed up by itself. But to out a teenager? He shouldn’t have even been up to win anywaus
@@babe6835 what he did was beyond wrong but I dont think he did it with the intention of outing her to everyone, it seemed like he just wanted to say something that could actually strike her emotions because he was tired of being bullied. either way he really screwed up and shouldve been punished more
@@heddalee i mean even if he didn't mean to out her the first time. he was forcing her out of the closet after it happened, which is a really shitty thing to do. someone's coming out should be something they control.
a shame that no one's mentioned how mercedes covers for santana when she's trying to find to strength to sing while she's processing the fact that she's gonna be outted state-wide
i love the way naya captured santana’s pain in this performance. you can clearly see her energy is different and she’s hurt. also, you can see how mad she got when she saw finn whisper to rachel, he had that cocky look he definitely deserved that slap
Instead of grieving about her death, let’s celebrate her life. Naya was perfect for Santana! We all know she’s the reason half of us are gay. We all related to her and fell in love with her portrayal of this amazing queen. Naya, you were amazing! We love you sosososo much!
The reason you’re gay? Um no, that’s not how it works. Maybe the reason you’re more comfortable with being gay, or more accepting of yourself. Or maybe even the reason you realized you were gay. But not the reason you are gay.
C Smith why are you starting an argument? I was making a nice comment about her. I was referring to the fact that many people are totally gay for her and it’s a joke the fandom makes a lot. I was in no way wrong or disrespectful. ❤️
Naya was the best actress and singer in Glee IMHO. Another one gone way too soon! Thinking of her little boy, mother, father, and the rest of her family. So sad!
As someone who was forced out of the closet earlier than I wanted to be, it's a truly terrifying mix of emotions and Naya portrayed it so well. You can feel the hesitation in her body movements, the way she looks at Brittany with repressed love and fear is just breathtaking. Finn deserved that slap, period.
Luckily, I've never been outed before, but her performance showed how terrifying it is as a gay person when you know most people won't accept you for who you are. It was so painful to watch and Naya's performance was incredible. I'm so sorry you were outed. It must've been difficult to go through
I can’t actually believe how much I appreciated Naya until now. Thank you for your heart and kindness. I know that we will all remember you forever and thank your for teaching us acceptance. RIP
I can watch this stage performance every hour and never get sick of it. Naya carries so much emotion in her face. I love everything about this- the song, dance moves, singing, and wardrobe. The talent on this stage is off the charts! I'm amazed that Glee pulled off a show every single week! So many moving parts and it all came together perfectly. Bravo, Glee!
Finn 1000% deserved that slap. He outed her to everyone and then had the audacity to say that no one cares. Just bc he was accepting, that’s no guarantee everyone else will. Especially given he saw how hard it was for Kurt to come out, he still did it to Santana not knowing what her home life was like. Idc that Santana was a bully, you never out someone. Period.
Gracias por todo Naya. En el cielo hay una reunión Gleek. Ustedes serán grandes estrellas en el firmamento que nos acompañará a muchas personas junto a Cory.
The best scene in all of Glee. Literally this performance was a part of a ripple effect that changed the high school coming out experience for the better. I was a part of that generation who saw 3 years higher than me bully queer kids and call them the f slur on the daily and sometimes even beat them up but my high school experience was amazing even post coming out and it was just cool to be a part of that generation who changed that and hopefully the next generation won’t revert it. Rest In Perfection my love! Let’s be real she deserved an Emmy for this scene alone
I just want to point out that Finn beat Puck on the floor of the choir room and was able to walk away without any consequences despite the fact that Mr. Schue saw it and took him off Puck yet Santana ended up in Figgins' office and threatened to be suspended.
In my opinion, this performance are one of the best, I can see myself on Santana' place, felling hurt e destroyed, I don't come out for my familie yet, and it's so much hard take that all pressure, sometimes I just want to disapeare for a moment, forget anything and look up to the sky. what happens with Naya hurts me so much, she's so special to me and all the evolution of Santana motivated me to be who I am... I hope that one day nobody feels the thinks that the LGBTQ communitie are passing until came out.
i love the shots where santana keeps looking at britt, like she’s so scared of what could happen next, and by looking at her kept her strong in some point
the thing that made me cry the most when i first saw this performance was santana's panic when she saw finn whispering sth to rachel i feel like the mashup is a set up, and those whispers are the final blow. it's terrible to be outed not at your terms, especially in a hostile environment, and then feeling like youre losing control over it. as a bi girl i really felt that. rewatched it recently and cried again. santana was one of the characters who helped me come to terms with my sexuality. im sure she helped a ton of wlw find some solace and comfort. im really hurting for naya. her legacy extends far beyond what i've written, and its hard to comprehend that she is not with us anymore (sorry if i made some mistakes, english is not my native language)
do not worry about your english, you expressed yourself perfectly and managed to put into words how many of us feel and how much of an impact naya and her portrayal of santana had on our lives. her legacy will never be forgotten!
