The real shame is that a LOT of young people (even those who like country music) don’t know how great most of these people sitting around on this show actually were. Mega talented writers and musicians.
You are SO right! So many there were icons themselves! Sad they are forgotten. But Willie may last forever! Love that kind Glen Campbell! And Crystal Gayle enjoying is Loretta Lynn's little sister.
I know exactly where I was…. Recently returned from Afghanistan… I was with my wife of 30 years at a restaurant … I had just taken a bite… and my wife mentioned that Glenn had passed away… and the gentle tears flowed.
20 years ago I would've dismissed this without even listening because of the genre. Now it causes goosebumps and brings a tear to my eye. Glen was such a talent. So nice to see all these musical geniuses sitting around enjoying each other's ability.
Jimi Hendrix was recording with the famous Wrecking Crew studio band in which Campbell was a member. He was asked what it was like being the best guitar player in the world. He pointed to Glen Campbell and responded“You should ask him that question”.
I'm a guitar player for over 50 years. I play blues and jazz. When I see this video I stop everything, listen and SMILE. This is an absolutely terrific exhibition of EXCELLENT Guitar playing. The love that comes out, and the talent are the best. This is a great picker if I ever heard one.
and I wish Roy had chimed in, to me all the he Haw stuff helped Roy to remain a bit in the shadow relative to his talent. His voice, too, better than many. I wish he and Glenn had toured together, played and sung together.
@@jimquantic Roy and Glenn were 'compadres' and played together as "dueling guitarists" many times. (from what I've seen over the years) Different yet equally great, IMO. Never saw the whole show, but seems to me Roy was letting his colleague have his moment. I've always thought Roy Clark was a monster talent on guitar (along with Chet Atkins)
I once thought that I hated country music. But Glen Campbell and many of the people he's surrounded by here, including Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson, Crystal Gayle, Roy Clark, et al., were part of the tradition of country and bluegrass music that was a real American artform. What country music evolved into is a commercial mess of bland, homogenous crap. Hearing this song really surprised me by taking me back to my childhood in the 1960s. He was a bigger part of it than I ever noticed.
I've watched another copy of this clip maybe a thousand times and every time it chokes me up. Glen was a once-in-a-lifetime talent, and God blessed us by letting it be in our lifetimes. Happy birthday, Glen!
Crystal Gale smiling next to you while you strum a guitar, I’d fall to pieces. Roy Clark is watching so intently and Glen knows he’s watching - and Roy knows Glen knows! Two juggernauts of country and guitar playing in general. Simply one of the best songs ever.
John Holton. I live in Scotland a would have paid any money to go to America and be there to listen to this. I only recently fully appreciated Glen from seeing him on these RU-vid clips. Adorable and out of this world the joy he brings singing this song.xx
Glen Campbell had so many gifts that it almost seemed unfair. He played brilliantly, sang wonderfully, wrote so many terrific songs and could even act very well. He is sorely missed.
I doubt if they'll ever be another Glen Campbell, such a talented man in many respects, one of America's and one the world's greatest ever entertainers.
This is a wonderful performance. I especially love the expression on Roy Clark's face as he listens and watches Glen. Roy has the wonder and admiration of a boy watching one of his heroes. It makes me admire them both even more.
You can't put Roy Clark in Glen Cambell's category of talent. Roy could make you think he was great by his comedy antics and pretending it was so difficult, but he made a lot of mistakes and covered them up by acting silly, which the people loved and interpreted that as being great. But if you played guitar you would see the difference in Cambells talent and Roy Clark or any other country guitarist's capabilities.
When one looks close and sees the genuine admiration from his peers, especially those who the camera focuses on on, including Roy Clark and Chet Atkins, it give one hope that there are very good human beings on this planet.
After all these years I still have tears in my eyes when I hear this beautiful song. I'll be 62 in a couple of weeks and I still feel the same as when i first heard it over 50 years ago.
All the historical talent on that stage, we’re losing them one by one, it’s a sad day every time one of them passes. Willie, Roy Clark and Chet Adkins admiring Glens skill on that guitar as well as the rest of them, there isn’t any body in the new generation that can touch Glens talent.
there is an old video on youtube that has them doing instrumental together called "ghost riders in the sky". poor quality video because of age, but great audio. look it up. you wont be disappointed.
02:31 That says it all right there. Look at the smiles on all of those faces. Glen has the admiration and respect of everyone of his fellow artists on that stage. My oh my, Glen was a supreme talent. Growing up, our family always watched “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour”.
I used to listen to a country music station, late night. And the DJ knew what folks who were up at that late hour wanted to hear. He'd play blocks of music, from certain stars. He played Glen Campbell music one night. RIP Glen. Your were the master.
I was 6 or 7 years old when Glens variety show debuted on national television. My oldest brother who then bared a stark resemblance to Glen, was deployed to Vietnam. My brother had a band before joining the Marines. So on the night the show aired, the phone began to ring from many of our neighbors who thought the guy they were watching on television was my oldest brother under a stage name. This went on for a couple more weeks to the point my parents started to question Ricks whereabouts. Glen Campbell has given all of us so many wonderful songs that helped us to navigate life just a little easier and funnier at times. Rest easy Glen and thanks for the many memories.
My father would always be playing Glen was I was growing up so I knew a lot of his music. Until recently I had no idea how good of a musician he was and that he is recognised as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Exceptional talent.
No one has ever been able to match Glen Campbell's virtuosity and professionalism. His talent is the standard by which all country players ought to be compared.
Wondering what Ched Atkins was thinking while looking at Glen’s guitar picking….” I can do that”. The musical talent in that room was incredible to see. 👍👍👍
I have always loved this clip. Sadly, it reminds me of the great talent that we have lost. I remember seeing Glen and Guitar Man Jerry Reed back in 1970 at the Arkansas State Fair. They were to guitar what Ray is to the keyboard.
Glen's butter smooth vocals made him a superstar who rose to the stratosphere in his profession. But that was just one of his talents, master gituar player and I believe he wrote too. Reminds me of simpler times
Seeing Crystal Gayle there reminds me of a story of how her tour bus was stolen by an escaped convict. She thought it was hilarious and I remember how down to earth and charming she was.
my god was Glen talented. Waylon is my favorite but man Glen has so much talent. Must be the greatest guitar player in country music history. Am I right? Jerry Reed, Vince Gill and Keith Urban are all great. But wow is Glen incredible
Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed should have their own version of Mt. Rushmore as the top guitar players ever..certainly in Country Music, and a good case could be made for any music genr. Maybe Vince Gill as an alternate lol...Keith Urban, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, and Ricky Skaggs could make good arguments for their own inclusion too...but Glen, Roy, Chet, and Jerry are THE top dogs and my mind can't be changed on them.
Agreed - I'd love to see the credits for the backup band. Is there a chance it was John Hughey? He was Conway Twitty's steel player and has always been my favorite.
I saw Glen live in 2005, right before he got really sick. The first half of the show was his classics and the second half was him singing Christmas songs. What and unbelievable experience
Good morning. I too was 15 in 1968. In my opinion Glen Campbell was THE most underrated guitar player. Period. And one helluva singer/songwriter also. I have admired this man my whole life. Such a talent. Pretty sure he is missed by many. Myself included. RIP kind sir. You made the world a better place.
I know that we honor people and their greatness in special tributes like Kennedy Center Honores, and Life Time Achievement awards, and the like. But it seems like we never truly understand how terrific they were untill their gone.
Roy had a (jealous) smile frozen to his face the whole time because, though he himself was a great picker, Glen left him in the dust and Roy knew it! He put on a brave face, to his credit, but Glen's clean lines just dusted everything.
I saw one of the best comments on here about Glen and it was something like "You know your a great guitar player when Roy Clark is sitting there just watching".
Not to take away from Waylon...Willie...Ray Stevens...and of course...all the other stars...AND Glen Campbell --- BUT...Crystal Gale...is Still an Angel on my mind!! WOWWEEEE...that woman is GORGEOUS!!!
Main thing with me I had a lot of idols when I was a kid. They rise and fall in your head. Batman Lionel Bart so on. Shani Wallis. Bit the thing about Glen Campbell he had such a great personality. Fame never went to his head. He was always down to earth. And I'm still a fan now and probably always will b3.
I've loved this song since it came out (yeah, I'm old), but this is the best rendition ever. I especially like watching the drummer -- he's definitely into it; maybe he knew how special this session was
Even a teenage rocker like me, in the sixties, would turn up Glen when one of his songs came on the radio. Much later I realized that the Nashville cats were the most talented music makers on the planet.
My dad played Glen all through my childhood and we watched his tv show. What a singer and a genius on the fretboard RIP Glen you were one of the very best
Just watched Glen's last performance singing "Gentle on my Mind." Very sad for all of us. My Heart goes out to Glen's wife and family. My Sincere condolences. Thankyou for the Courage all of you to show it. I humbly pay my deepest respects to Glen and his GOD given talents. One of the finest (in my opinion) guitar players and vocalists...ever! Glen's performance of "Gentle on my Mind" hosted by Ralph Emery is truly wonderful to listen to and watch. Thankyou for the Great memories Glen..you've gone to a far better Resting Place...
