I don't understand why he isn't regarded as one of the top 100 guitarists ever. He got his start as a sessions player. So he was in demand and a really great guitarist
I always watch this one. The singing and the quite frankly incredible guitar playing is unsurpassed - would just love to be able to drop my instrument and walk up to him on this stage and give him a massive hug. We've lost an incredible musical talent.
@@brianlewis8457 We certainly did lose an incredible artist. I was still listening to him today. I truly never get tired of his talent. He has been an inspiration to me and my music.
I'm an old hippie freak I'm 70 years old, I loved my rock and roll and still do. But there aint a person alive that likes music that can deny the fact that Glenn Campbell was a star. His guitar playing was mesmerizing and his voice was great. I hope you rest in peace✌️✌️✌️
Glen was member of the session wrecking crew and Beach Boys long before he went solo, family and church before that lifetime writing and singing started. Loved hisfans.
How fitting that one of Glen's latter performances (enduring his 'condition') of this iconic song, features a sublime vocal and imo, his best solo guitar fill EVER for this tune...this takes into account the dozens & dozens of Glen's renditions over the years. Just incredible!
A friend of mine, a sound engineer in Glasgow accompanied him on his last tour, he said he was okay as long as he had the song list in front of him on a laptop.
I wholeheartedly endorse your sentiments. This as well as the 2001 Sioux Falls concert are singularly spectacular. Subtle but magical differences in both arrangements. The first version of this great composition I heard was by OC Smith in 1969 of his album titled "For once in my life". I was transfixed as a 15 year old by both the melody and lyrics. Excellence is timeless and transcends age!
Glen was not a Country musician, he was an Incredible, COMPLETE Musician. As a member of the Wrecking Crew, he could, and did play everything. I had the pleasure of meeting him briefly many years ago, and what a kind and humble man. So glad there are countless recordings of his performances for generations to enjoy. Glen, Rest In Peace.
You make a great point. And since you mention the Wrecking Crew, I sing in Life Choir gospel in LA, which was founded by the gentleman that drummer Hal Blaine credits, in the documentary, with starting the Wrecking Crew, composer/arranger HB Barnum, at Capital Records. Because of the advanced age of most of the choir members, we never fully regained our momentum after the pandemic. But the guy who "started it all" is still alive and living in the valley. I love Glen Campbell RIP
"And I need you more than want you... And I want you for all time..." I have loved those lines since 1973 and it's 2024... So much has happened... Glen passed in 2017 but I just imagine he's still singing and playing the guitar... May he rest in peace
Glen Campbell's mastery of the guitar was simply stunning. He was so under-rated. His voice stayed strong until he had to stop performing due to illness. I grew up during the height of Glen Campbell's career, in the 1960's and 1970's, and I loved hearing his songs on the radio.
Honestly think I may like this better than the original; the tone of the song better matches an older, weathered man, and Glen embodies it like the master he is. He relaxes and slips into the rhythm of the character like an old denim jacket. And even if he's played it 10,000 times, it still sounds new.
Find that impromptu version of Gentle on my Mind from Nashville Tonight, I think. On stage with no less than Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Willie Nelson, et. al. Just phenomenal.
Still love listening to this , Jeremy Vine ( Radio 2 ) slips it in occasionally ( ooooh matron ) usually stop what I am doing to listen to it .....stunning
@arturbello4213 I was a kid in jr high/high school when Galviston, Whitica lineman were all over the radio. Rhinestone Cowboy, all sound to me like Country Songs that could have been written today. I grew up listening to Rock. so anything that didn't sound like rrock to me was country,
It’s no wonder Eddie Van Halen asked Alice Cooper if he could arrange for Glen to give him some guitar lessons. What an incredible guitarist and singer he was. Sublime performance, R.I.P Glen!
Here I am, an old chick listenin to one of my heart throbs from the 60's and 70's and remembering... How beautiful it was to be livin in Wichita and hearing this song driftin through the house with the breezes blowin through the windows and being so young and carefree... Rest Easy Glen your memory has gone Platinum..🎼🖤
Yeah, he’s up there. Just check out some of the videos of his guitar work to see why he’s so respected. Even more, listen to how many virtuosos who played with him speak so highly of him.
Possibly the greatest song written in the pop/country genre. Glen Campbell was an incredible guitar player and his voice was perfect on this song. I remember when this song first hit the airwaves and it blew my mind. Still has the power to move me all these many years later.
Yes, on all the other version it feels very restrained, as if it's never allowed to fully let rip and peak. It never feels complete, except on this one.
The performance of a lifetime, like he’s spent 40 years rehearsing for this moment, sublime solo, matched with impeccable voice hitting all the notes, geez 3:31
GOD!!! this man was a brilliant singer/guitarist. I was in my early teens when I first heard this great song. I'm 66 years young now and it's still one of the best songs ever written.
Why does this song ALWAYS make me.cry? You just know Glen is a good man. And Jimmy Webb is out of this world. Just perfection. The mastery of both iput together s a rare thing. Listening feom Ireland. 🕊🙏💚☘️🇮🇪
What a beautiful man. So much talent, heart, and soul poured into a song he must have played 1000 times before. Jimmy Webb’s songwriting could not have had a better interpreter. The guitar work in his solo starts off pretty standard and Glen’s mastery takes it through the universe, and I can see guitarists across the world chucking their instruments in the trash. Always brilliant, always under appreciated, Glen was an American icon and a true gift to music. And by the way, this is from a guy whose favorite band is Cannibal Corpse!
There's a great full show here..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9FPI6dKOBnY.html I'm a metal fan and went to see him in 08 on that tour....the guitarist on the left is Todd Youth Schofield RIP a real hardcore punk guitarist, Chris Chaney is on bass on the gig I linked....he was the musicians musician.
Hiya Bob. Nice reflection on this clip. Never seen it before, but certainly a fine tribute to a artist who I'm not familiar with. Never realised he was a lead guitar player. And the shapes he used on the fretboard are testimony to that. Keep safe. 🎸🤠
Me too!! I was washing up and this was on in the background. It stopped me in my tracks and just gripped me. Incredible performance. The guitar solo and the amazing vocals at the end were just superb. Considering this legend of a man was knocking 80 it just proves what a talent he had.
@@storageofmylife1644 yes, I loved that guitar solo aswell, he added a little bit of his own freestyling.. clearly he was loving it... fantastic round of applause at the end.
@@bonnie43uk Tom, Glen was a messianic Jew. Bet you didn't know that. As a believer, I'm gonna get to spend eternity with Jesus and Glen. Can you imagine that. I'm going to get Glen to teach me all those cool rifs. The opportunity is open to you too Tom...you know what you need to do.
@@isanna6075 Hey, Isanna, how cool to meet you on here. Long time no hear. Hope you're doing ok, .. no, i wasn't aware of Glen's beliefs, he's free to believe anything he wishes, just as you are Isanna, if you want to believe that Glen is going to teach you all those cool guitar riffs, that's absolutely fine with me. Do you still watch Ask Cliffe videos?, I wondered where you went to?
@@bonnie43uk yeah, I still watch Cliffe from time to time but those interactions we had, for me at least, were only for a season. At the end of the day, we pick the team we want to play for and accept the consequences. How you've argued on there for 10 plus years back and forth is beyond me. But hey, everyone to their own I guess. You know Tom, since being away from Cliffe, I've looked into evolution a little more in depth (I'm talking humans evolving from monkeys just for clarification). It turns out all those ape/humans transitional skeletons such as Lucy, Piltdownman, Javaman just to name a few were a complete hoax. I really didn't know that. And, the men funding the digs weren't the best of characters either,. just God hating men desperate to prove He doesn't exist. Fascinating. If only the atheist, people like yourself, would follow the evidence, you would have to conclude at the very least, that this monkey to human theory is a lie. A total con job to be more precise. There is zero evidence of it. None. It's just a story. Made up to decive any poor soul willing to buy it.
I can’t say I have ever been a country music fan, but this guy was exceptional! Count yourself lucky to have lived in these times and in the presence of artists like Glen Campbell!
Steve Wright, who passed away this week, used the outro to Wichita Lineman as a closing theme to his legendary afternoon radio program on BBC Radio. #RIPSteveWright
Jeeesh blew the cobwebs away! I remember finding this song in my dad’s record collection when I was a little kid! It gets better and better every time I listen to it. Thank you Glen and Jimmy! 👌🫡👏🙏
Just discovered this particular version of WL. He was unquestionably one of the best guitarists that ever lived. This version is stunning, just extraordinarily brilliant, given Glens health at this time. Beyond perfection….Cheers Glen.
This song, without any discussion or debate, was one ‘perfect storm’ of a pop song! From the lush orchestration, ethereal string arrangements and off-world lyrics it had it all!! Glen’s guitar interpretation here was the best he’s ever done. Sweet legacy, Glen!! RIP, mate! 🙏
Simply awesome. Both, voice and guitar. They don't make 'em like that anymore. The first I heard of Glen Campbell was of him as a singer; later on I found out that he was a GREAT guitarist...
He was just a name on a compilation of Bob Dylan songs album - instrumentals (1965/6) when I first heard him in Singapore. He was ''Don't Think Twice It's Alright - 12 string guitar Glen Campbell.'' In retrospect it was probably something The Wrecking Crew had done.
He's such a beautiful player. Makes it all look so easy. Trust me, the level of tone/groove he's generating in that solo - it's not. Talented players often spend a lifetime trying to sound like that, and never get there
Great guitarist and such a lovely deep song! I think people forget how good Glen was at playing the lead this performance goes to prove how talented he was! RIP my kilted warrior!
What a stellar live version of this masterpiece and the recording quality is amazing - On my 65 inch and these B&Ws cranked I am right there, hearing it as I never heard it before, all these 55 years later.! Glen's Strat sounds SOOOOOOOOOOOO good -the rhythm portions as well as the lead and the morse code tapped out is so sweet and nostalgic! Tears . . .what a song for the ages. Herad it on the radio all the time in 68 riding in Mom's Biscayne when it hit #1. Thank you Glen!
I'll say what i want about Glen....An absolute genius, God Bless Him. I cannot thank him enough for his contribution to humanity......From the bottom of my heart.
I’ve heard Glen perform this song hundreds if not a thousand times. I always liked the original guitar break solo he performed on record with his Fender VI bass. But when I heard his solo here I was dumbfounded at how wonderful it was, simply brilliant. What a talent!
This is one of my favorite Glen Campbell songs and the delivery is nothing short of masterful. Thank you Mr. Campbell for setting the bar so high and making it all look so joyful and effortless.
Best concert I ever went to was Glen Campbell on his farewell tour...... he had family on stage wirh him, and his voice & guitar playing were still superb. But knoing we would never see him again just made it all so emotional.
Saw Glen on the Meet Glen Campbell Tour in Belfast 2008...I went last minute and ended up sitting front row center stage due to a cancellation. It was a privilege to watch a legend at work.
What this song does is let you remember happier times in life, friends long gone and the new being born maybe wipe away a tear or 2 this song is a masterpiece stands alone
Put this on my set list for tonight. Will be my favorite song of the evening for me. Thank you Glen for giving this to the world to enjoy listening to or playing
Glen was without a doubt one of the best naturally talented musicans of our time , a standing ovation for this performance his guitar lead while singing was over the top .
He performed this pretty much the same way for so long (same melody, lyrics, and phrasing), which is such a tribute to Jimmy Webb. He has said that every time he sings it he’s inspired, and it shows. In the age of iterations and disruptions, I find this relentless consistency so satisfying. Thank you, Mr. Campbell.
Jimmy was a genius and glen just made it other worldly and melancholia that made me love it from the start.. but brilliant artists... interview with Jimmy that Rick Beto does is really great...
God bless you Leo Fender, your limited hearing and blindness never stopped you from creating the sound of American music that we all know and love. Few deserve the word genius but you Sir where just that and its my pleasure to continue your work.
Much love from Sydney, Australia. As a youngster, I grew up listening to my mum playing Glen’s vinyl records. I really like the duet of Glen with Keith Urban!
This takes me back to the summer, over 50 years ago when I was at my friend's house with the radio on when her mom stopped long enough to hum along and lose herself in a dream for a few minutes. Glen is such a great guitarist and I love this song!
This is definitely my favorite Glen Campbell song. It is so beautifully written, the lyrics, unique. It just brings back some beautiful memories for me.
I grew up listening to this as a child, my parents played it regularly. The whole album is incredible. It evokes such wonderful childhood memories, Glen Campbell's voice is magical, he conveyed so much emotion when he sung. It brings me to joyful tears everytime i hear this song. God bless you Glen. 🥰❤️
This song will always paint the perfect picture in my mind of exactly what song is about. A masterpiece of song writing by jimmy Webb and performed flawlessly by the legend that is/was Glen Campbell
This is a testament to the power of music, it literally can rewire your brain, make it work in a way that can cheat an incurable degenerative disease. I am so glad this beautiful man was able to perform at such a high level for as long as he did while battling dimensia.
