I've always loved JT's work. If he covers something, he always does it justice. But, a million years and a million miles ago, I was listening to every song I could get my hands on. And, a lot of the ones i loved were written by Jimmy Webb, and sung by Glen Campbell. I can't imagine those old console stereos without them. My thanks to all of you.
I have always loved this song & Galveston too. 2 songs that take you on another man's journey, making you feel like it was your's. Jimmy Webb, you master creator of fine tunes, who gave the wonderful Glen a platform to reveal his talent & James certainly does so too. When music is this great, it just draws you in. Thanks you weavers of magic. 😊❤🎉
This song touches my heart and so many others. It always places me traveling and dreaming of love a long, long time ago, before many cars didn't even have FM radio, only AM. And AM radio played that song over and over because everybody loved it. We listened and dreamed on our AM car radios. It's a rare, timeless song. It's good that JT did his version, as everyone should, it does not detract from Glenn Campbell's version that long time ago.
Don’t worry, I don’t think JT is trying to take the song from Glen. Some of the comments here are so serious. JT did a nice job on it. I liked it more than I thought I would. Don’t worry, Glen and J Webb still own it
Listen to the studio version with Yo Yo Ma on the cello, on the Covers album. JT’s voice was still with him then and the instrumentals are much better than Glens version.
Some songs can be easily covered by other artists. Some cannot because they “belong” to a certain artist and cannot be divorced from that performer’s style. Norwegian Wood is one because only John could do it justice. Witchata Lineman belongs to Glenn Campbell… for all time.
@@guyamlegend he didn’t write phoenix, gentile on my mind, or Galveston because Glen was a singer-performer-entertainer not a songwriter but those songs, like lineman bear the trademark of his unique inimitable style period.
James Taylor has written and performed some of the greatest American music in the last 100 years. But he just doesn't have the voice for this song. He has a great ensemble of musicians, but the collaboration is just not capturing the magic of Wichita Lineman. I think the mandolin is what kills it.
Beautiful! Even though I don't like Taylor's politics I do like his voice. Glen has sung this song for Republican events even though he was a registered Dem.
