It's traditional in Ireland to have a party with the open coffin in the corner of the room. It's called a wake. Check out Finnegans Wake by The Dubliners.
The idea of not bringing my family home for the ROSARY 📿 doesn’t bare thinking 🤔 about bc I’m half Irish ☘️ my mum was Irish & my dad Scottish. It’s just what we do & please BELIVE I have seen all sorts 😂.
Great job from the singers they both ripped into it, but the bit that gets me is at 1:19 when you've got most of the remaining Pogues on the stage, quietly joined by the last of the original Dubliners, and they suddenly kick in together, crying my eyes out from that second on every time.
Lisa’s voice suit that masterpiece perfectly. Fantastic rendition, no better a tribute to the genius that was and may forever be. Sleep easy, namesake x
Original words to the song in a Catholic church....RIP Shane proud Irishman...the best of England and Ireland. We do death well here. Sad and happy, hard to explain...
To be blunt, it's not as if the Catholic church hasn't been full of homosexuals since its creation. It's always been the go to place for child abusing nonces.
Absolutely delightful to see John Sheahan performing! The last one from original Dubliners band still got it, what a legend. Is there better way to say farewell to someone as great as Shane with that concert?..
@@as1r6536disagree with you there, been to a few Irish funerals. Even though a funeral is a sad affair, we go to them to celebrate the lives of our loved ones family or friends
Sitting in Nenagh Church at Shane's funeral was am amazing feeling. It was SUBLIME. The music brought me to another level of being sung and played by the people who knew and understood him, and they even brought their music to another level in honouring this extraordinary man. Yes he had many faults but he was sincere with no airs and Grace's and HUMBLE. Wow what an extraordinary send off to a man.who loved and lived his Irish heritage. We should all take a page from his book - proud to be Irish especially now in these uncertain times. RIP Shane yoor legacy will live on.
Nobody wrote songs like Shane McGowan. Nobody performed like him either. This was a unique and beautiful send off for a truly brilliant artist. A final and fitting tribute. It was perfect.
I clicked on this link with a little trepidation as I wondered how they could do justice to such a wonderful song. So glad to say my doubts were unnecessary....this was a beautiful version of the son.... sung and played with so much feeling and passion. Must admit it brought a tear to my eye. Well done and RIP Shane.
@@eily_b I get that but I have always thought that Fairytale was so unique with Shane and Kirsty that another version might disappoint. Glad to be proved wrong.
How is it beautiful? In Gods house, no respect at all. I guess it doesn't matter when it's Catholicism but any other religions beliefs are embraced and respected.
@thet1375 It is beautiful because even in a time of great grief his family were able to find a bit of joy on what is undoubtedly one of the hardest days they'll ever have to live through in Gods house and in music. Clearly none of the priests had any issues with it or else the music would not have been played. In my experience coming from a family of funeral directors, a character like Shane MacGowan was not meant for a drab funeral, but one full of madness and dancers just like he would have endorsed were he still with us. You can have your opinions of course, but to many that is considered the ideal way to be remembered. Love and light, that is what Catholicism is all about. All the best :)
@@holly-rosemckinneycondren So anything goes when it comes to Catholicism? All respect for God and Catholic beliefs goes out the window, the attitude towards Catholicism in this country is 'it'll be grand anything goes' but other religions are embraced and respected.
I agree with you, it is a truly Irish tradition to celebrate someone’s life this way. It is a tradition that was opposed by Rome in the years following the famine, who then instructed the church leaders in Ireland to suppress it along with much of Irish tradition and culture, replacing it under the “devotional revolution”. It included suppressing Irish dancing, making it stiff and upright instead of its natural expression of joy. But thankfully we still have sean nós dancing, growing all the time, and Shane’s funeral showed our true Irish cultural traditions are still there to enjoy and show the world. The most important thing was a beautiful tribute to Shane, it honoured his great gift to the world. So why should anyone want to impugn that by imposing strictures purporting to be religious observance? @@holly-rosemckinneycondren
Lost my own father to cancer in June at the age of 64, this version really hit me hard. The tears flowed. Will be a hard Xmas without him. This song is just as Shane would have wanted. His most epic song performed perfectly. Amazing!! Enjoy what you have in life and each other. 🥃
I also lost my dad in June, he was an Irish descent brought up in London. He would have loved this. This is by far the best rendition other than Shane’s and Kirsty’s. RIP to them both
@@truthhurts8924thank you for those words. They really mean a lot. I will listen to this song every night over the festive period just to be reminded of the times i had with my father in life. No loss hurts more than that of a parent.
@@JoanneCassemis Really sorry to hear that. I guess we both know what each other are going through and have went through. Not a day goes by when i don’t think about him. Strangest thing was he was in a dream i had last night. He was wearing his railway uniform in it and was around 20 years younger than when he passed. First thing i done this morning was phoned my mother and told her the about the dream. She was with him for over 45 years. So hard losing a parent. All the best to you.
Where can we buy this version for Shane’s favourite charity? Love, love, love the Lisa O’Neill authentic Irish vocal and the instrumental bit at the end. The combined age of the musicians must be about 300. God bless ‘em. Hope enough young people are learning from them to keep the traditional music alive. RIP Shane. ❤️
@@leannecampbell4551 His parents were both Irish & he lived in Tipperary till 6. Good luck with telling the children of Irish Emigrants they aren't entitled to a claim to their cultural ancestry. And your timing stinks.
@@sparking2016 You clearly know nothing about the history of said Family and their ‘Elite’ lineage, exclusively NOT working/lower class and impoverished…like Shane portrayed all his life. Joe Strummer, Lydon, Sid and the rest of pretenders tried that Marxist narrative too, all rich ‘boys’ fooling the apathetically deluded herd! The ‘fact’ remains, he was an Englishman…not Irish! Claim that one if it makes you feel better, but no genuine Irishman worth his salt, would claim an Englishman! 👍
When Glen let Shanes son sing, without interruption, and then bolstered him back into the chorus, was pure love and joy. An epic moment, worthy of safe keeping for future generations.
I saw less bigotry in this Irish country church than on a facebook page or any social fecking network. At a time when religions threaten the world we should pay tribute to this tolerance, respect and love. That’s why I love this country and its people so much. Glory to Shane MacGowan, glory to the Pogues, glory to Ireland. 💚🤍🧡 if god exists there is no doubt that he is Irish A french lad say so.
This funeral is a milestone in the history of human beeing as well as in the history of music(ians) of "modern" (???) times. Well deserved - it's unbeatable masterclass to connect pain of loss to fun for millions. Thanks for you being always yourself in our artificial world! Have a nice flight, sir❤😢❤
It's funny how that song brings back so many memories of Christmases spent with loved ones who have passed on to their eternal rest. God rest you Shane Macgowan.
It was hard to listen to this and not shed a tear, It really pulled on the heart strings, Christmas just wont be the same now both Shane and Kirsty are gone, but on Christmas morning you can bet everyone In the country will be belting this song out and Shane and Kirsty will be looking down on us. God bless you Shane and Kirsty thank you for giving the world the best ever Christmas song 🙏🙏🙏🎤🪕🥁🎹
Like Shane, I was born in England to Irish parents in a time that was very divisive. This song of his has become an English and Irish Christmas staple (although based in Newyork 😂) and of all the changes I have seen in my lifetime in our little Islands I am glad to see that Shane’s music has united us all in a very positive way ❤
The unification of Ireland will soon be complete and Shane's music will have played it's part in it. I bought the Pogues first album many years ago. Now the importance of that album has dawned on me.
Well done, Glen and Lisa and all the players assembled. Especially happy to see John Sheahan playing his whistle. Nice ceremony to say goodbye. God rest Shane's soul.
Still remember thinking 'wow' when I first heard Fairytale on Bruno Brookes Radio 1 countdown in 87. I owe a lot to this song. Thank you Shane and Kirsty ❤️🙏
Wow, it's so sad to think that these beautiful people will be a minority in their own country in a few decades and eventually disappear in numbers through mass migration 😢. RIP Shane, RIP Ireland.
This must be the best funeral ever held for anyone. I love this about the Catholic Church in Ireland, they allow things, very unCatholic things, when it is required. Bravo to the priest, a man who can read the room.
I’m Irish and this song every year since it came out has made me cry with goosebumps and this was no different. Thank you for keeping it true to the real song. Rip shane. 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Very emotional. Song means a lot to me as my brother and his wife’s first dance. Christmas doesn’t start until I hear this song. I’d say they did Shane proud!
What a wonderful send off for Shane joyous not morbid i think he will be smiling down at all the effort and positive vibes from such lovely friends and family 🍻
Feel like the country needed this after the crap we’ve been through the last month or so. Ireland at its absolute best, a wonderful send off. RIP Shane
This is the most bittersweet poignant moments I have ever seen . Shane was probably laying there laughing thinking Gawd I wish they’d shut the f up… I’m finally gettin some winks here . 💃🕺🏻 😢 🙏🏼
I am one year older than Shane. I've been a fan for as long as I can remember. This song is super nostalgic for me. I lived a similar life as him, and finally got too old to keep up. RIP, Shane. 😥
