Glen was and always be the real Bass player of the Pistols. Sid was eye candy and without Sid, the Pistols never would have been as Glam. All these years later now we all know Glen was the real deal.
As a musician myself, I don't even think of Sid Vicious as being a part of the Sex Pistols. Sid was just a cartoon character for their image. When I think of the Sex Pistols, I think of Glenn as being the bassist and a major part of the songwriting of most of their great songs. I"m glad Glen got a chance to really enjoy it all with the other guys during their reunion stints.
The whole movement needed Sid without him a band that only made on album would not have gone down in history, your misunderstanding the whole meaning of what they were trying to achieve, when the pistols are brought up the first name is Sid , Sid is also on most of the merch, they didn't want a clean bassist like glen and end up like the ramones ,
@@terryhall7697 I don’t think you understand what they were about. Only after they broke up did people create these punk rock myths, at the time they were just the latest gen of rock bands. malcolm and the press had other ideas. Sid didnt play on their album nor did he write a song. he was great on my way and if he didnt die would of been a better front man than johnny
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 no I do understand I was just around at the time of all this as a teenager working in London so I don't make my comments from books
So true. Their one album would probably be crap and they'd just be a small burp in music history if the album wasn't so strong with Glen's help in the songwriting.
I'm not sure if another Pistols album would have been a good idea - they weren't the sort of band to "progress", they had one sound and it was great. Lydon said the band broke up at the right time for the wrong reasons. It's strange that Matlock didn't write or co-write much after the Pistols, though . . . there was the Rich Kids and then, as far as I know, nothing.
@@tonybates7870 Matlock co-wrote some songs for iggy pop. Im sure he did a lot more stuff that you just never heard if cause he couldn’t get a record deal or whatever. I also disagree, they could of made another great album and progress, just because it doesn’t exist doesn’t mean it wouldn’t happen. People rewrite history and invented punk when steve and paul who founded the group saw themselves like the faces or new york dolls
Sex Pistols should have kept Glen on bass and then just have Sid going along on tour just doing pogo and fighting with people and stuff like that (not that I think he SHOULD do that, just being realistic). A kind of punk version of Bess "from" the Happy Mondays. Sid Vicious should've just been a mythical part of the movement and the underground, not a part of the sex pistols.
he probably would have endedup playing drums in some band. would have been better for him too probably. I agree with you there was no se pistols without glenn, the fact they didnt write much after him makes it clear
But then Matlock was part of the the band Sid Vicious fronted after the Pistols before he died. According to Matlock and the others, Vicious was a potentially great singer. And, of course his brilliant Eddie Cochran covers ('Something Else' & 'C'mon Everybody') plus his knowing piss-take of Lydon's style on 'My Way' more than support that. I never understood why, after Lydon left, they didn't bribe Matlock back and make Sid the singer.
Makes me laugh when people say the Sex Pistols were manufactured. Listening to Matlock hear says it all. McLaren was part of it but it just sort of happened. Ironically they made a fantastic album which i don't think McLaren was aware of at the time.
He opens with...The mid 1970s there was no much going on????...In fact the mid 1970s Britain had one of the most significant bands in the world..Stones,Who, Floyd,Kinks, Supertramp,Faces, Genesis, Zeppelin...the list goes on and on.
Yeah, fuck feeding your kids, it's all about 6th form politics, ideals and, here's my favourite bullshit expression, being 'real' whatever the fuck that's meant to mean
If Glen hadn't have wrote those songs, they'd have had nothing to sing in 1996. He is credited as a songwriter on 10 of the 12 songs on the Sex Pistols' only album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, :)
yeah the professionals did some good stuff, no magic there though is there. Jonesy is a fabulously underrated guitarist and songwriter, but as a singer and lyricist? 123 and just anothr dream are great songs though.
that was a very insightful take on the Pistols.I have lately been listening to the Professionals and I think the same as you regarding Lydon and the Sex Pistols sound. I actually like the Professionals because of their nice driving rhythm sound. But they don't have as much bite as the Lydon era Pistols
Malcolm McClaren sadly tried to not pay everyone he came in contact with, whose services he sought and people who he collect money for; e.g, Producers Chris Thomas and Bill Price and the Sex Pistols themselves. Who wants to be remembered as a miser as well. He let himself down there.
Er....I posted a FACTUAL reply on this topic. Why was it removed? !? It was Alkasura and my eldest brother Perry worked there for a while. It was a boutique situated at 304 King’s Road from 1969 to 1974 when the owner John Lloyd committed suicide. Marc Bolan had an account there. Rod Stewart, Mick Ronson, one of the blokes from Chicory Tip and other rock stars frequented it. I would go in now and again and get barked at by John (I was only about 10) to get lost. I particularly remember a wet Saturday afternoon in Autumn when the shop was closing, Perry was cashing up, it was getting dark and the door swung open as Ian Hunter fell into the shop demanding to try on a spangly purple jacket with cherries on it. He was as high as a kite, reached into his jeans and pulled out a wad of big blue fivers. Julie Christie also shopped there, she was very generous, the staff liked her. Ray Davies was a regular, Maurice Gibb and Lulu came in as an item. Alkasura was very expensive, a lot of imported stuff, some custom made items - Mickey Finn always wanted stuff taken in as he was so slim, my brother said he didnt carry any fat. Perry moved on to Naf Naf after Alkasura -another Kings Road classic - but I never went in there
Pretty big "only" though isn't it? take Lydon and his lyrics out of the equation and what have you got? The Professionals? the Rich kids? even with Mclaren the best you'd have mustered would be a Sham 69/Tenpole tudor pub rock act.
I don't think Malcolm was all THAT bad. He had guts, had style, and was creative to a degree. And for Glen and John and others to bitch about him being a sadist and manipulator - look at the gear he was selling at the time! S&M bondage wear! A little beyond Mr. Wimple squeezing the Charmin Bread I'd say!
matelot95 so what. Daft comment from Steve who was still jealous 40 years on, in his book, that John Cale's wife fancied Glen and not him. I couldn't believe reading that.
@@jemima216 What's he jealous of him? don't get me wrong, a honest question. I mean, why would he? He also had a good social circle, had good life after Pistols. And had his own family with good amount of cash, and wealth. So why would he? Also he was also the founding members of the band, m i right? For the look things, Glen doesn't look that handsome you know. He just an ordinary dude who can play bass (at least better than Sid of cuz). I don't understand what you've said above.
And also, is not only Steven who had something on Glen. Lydon also got a thing with Glenn you know. So do you mean Lydon also if jealous of Glen? If so which part of him he would be jealous of?
@@thureintun1687 I think my comment explains itself. Steve is going on in a very, unmistakably jealous manner about this event where John Cales' ex wife is sexually interested in Glen, quote, " She only had eyes for Glen" and not him. This is something new for him and he, being highly insecure, affected him enough, to be very sore about it 42 years later in a book.
@@thureintun1687 Also it's a side issue but Steve Jones hasn't got any family. He explains in his book, that he is unable to have relationships because of being sexually abused as a child. Have you read his book called Lonely Boy?
Mclaren instigated the punk revolution but needed the Pistols to play the fools as they couldn't play much...led to more inventive bands post punk eg joy division
without the Sex Pistols Mclaren was nothing, before or since. Lydon gave us Anarchy in the uk and God save the queen, Mclaren gave us bondage trousers. choose your cultural icon.
@@punkybitch5872 i find John fucking ANNOYING!!!!! And i’ve always believed he married Nora for money. I mean c’mom. John was waayyy too young to get married, a “rock star” at the Start of his carrer and with his status he could have married a much prettier girl but no... Ñora was ugly actually and older than him... he married for money
