Glenn Gould - Pt. 3: Piano Sonata B Flat Major, k. 333 (On How Mozart Became A Bad Composer)

Glenn Gould

Part 3 of a light-hearted and humorous tribute from one musical genius to another. Glenn Gould had a somewhat mixed opinion of Mozart's music: while he was renowned for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, his views on Mozart were not as consistently enthusiastic. Gould expressed reservations about the emotional expressiveness and the perceived emotional restraint in Mozart's music.
This unique-documentary is significant in several respects. It is the most sustained and pointed of his various public statements about his ambivalent feelings toward Mozart’s music. It marks the first time he let loose the comic side of his public persona on television and concludes with passionate performance of the K. 333 sonata, that up until now has never been released and differs significantly from his three other preserved performances of the work.
Video and audio have been completely restored from the broadcast master.

I love how he crushes and exposes Mozart's cheesiness while still giving it his full dedication when playing it incredibly well that had me clap loud when he finished. What a great pianist he was. hahahaha, it's like he leaves nothing left for Mozart to defend his commercial style.

Right?! Even if he’s trying to deconstruct and remove all of the corny phrasing, it’s still going to be Gould playing, so it’ll still sound evenly voiced and clearly articulated with world-class technique, dynamic, rhythm and a metronomically consistent tempo. What’s left is beautifully played Mozart 😭 GG 1 Mozart 0

@@fazec0ld802 I definitively share your perspective and appreciation of GG's mixed media work : artist, pianist, music composition analyst, theater actor, humorist (often overlooked, when he is at his most serious you can feel humor relief is not far), genius in seeing through Mozart. Before watching this i've always had a similar but less elaborated less than grand view of Mozart's music, GG articulated everything not so great about Mozart's music that confirmed me which is not to say Mozart had some genius. I know only a small fraction of the audience understands that his analysis is dead serious even if delivered in an entertaining funny way sometimes. Mozart in my view is a bit overrated and so is Beethoven. I cringe at mozart V-I trills cadences. So predictable and annoying like a bureaucratic mannerism.. When we performing his piano sonatas we have to get in that aesthetic genre such that it makes sense, but at other times when i am a listener it sounds like an anachronistic dogmatic ritual mannerism that makes no sense, and is not classical but sounds like a long gone era style.

Somehow Im getting used to this lively and non plus ultra virtuoso version! Now I hear Schiff version and feel all the over melodramatic touch given to Mozart piano works. Also at the end these pieces were mainly designed for showmanship, and here Gould goes along with that intention with the ultimate literal and fast playing of it.
@ChamMansour
@ChamMansour 2 месяца назад
You have every right to believe so. Contemporary pianists have put into their minds the creed that classical music, as compared to romantic and impressionist compositions, is designed for the purpose so stated by yourself: of being in its essence a senescent element of music, into which variegation and genuine enjoyment does not belong, and as long as they proceed to play such music in so dry and sluggish a manner, I do not wonder they view music from the classical era as something of a side-dish.

@@westernkentucky5956 It's nothing new. The establishment hates someone that does not suck up to them. Typically genius do not need establishment approval and they hate it. Most genius and truly talented people are hated. Most people are mediocre and can only follow conventions and cannot see the good in original people until its becomes mainstream. The music establishment is dominated by a specific group : Bernstein, horrowitz, bonfman you get the flow. GG is not of that mold and they demand to suck up to them, he gave them the finger (figuratively speaking). You still get many of them to derate him. Have you heard Mozart on a fortepiano from his own lifetime? I find Gould's interpretations more similar to that than any other pianist's. Which to me is a good thing. This is much closer to Mozart's own aesthetic than the Mozart specialists such as Uchida.

The speed masks technical and interpretive inadequacies. It is better to hear from a master musician who appreciates Mozart and understands that in Mozart each note counts. It is good to have this on RU-vid where the speed can be adjusted to a more acceptable 75%, but this only reveals that it is a particularly well phrased performance

I know most of the comments already, 1st and 3rd movements too fast, 2nd movement too slow. Watch his face in the 2nd movement, in the same state of ecstasy as when he is playing Bach. No one who hates Mozart could play it like this. He has completely absorbed the music and he is having the time of his life playing it. I don't listen to a lot of Mozart but he makes it so interesting I could not turn it off. Now I am thinking other performers make Mozart sound boring.
