So great! Glenn Miller life! I will see you soon in Gifhorn/ Germany when you give a concert in the Stadthalle at the 15th February! (Excuse my bad english- I don't speak english...)
This may come out as sounding harsh - but there a lot of soul and joy missing from the piece. Almost like this is a job. Timing is simply not sharp, either. I saw a piano, but I could hardly hear it.
Good tempo, however, cold have used WAY more lead alto! Also, dynamics toward the end were lacking...saxes way too loud, not matching the rest of the band....
+Jokernaut Yeah I thought it was just me, the sax quartet sounded slightly off and kinda ruined it. Your comment is a little dramatic lol the brass section was brilliant, especially throughout the breakdown. could have done without the piano though.
Louis Auto This is a little faster (174 Beats per minute) than Miller's 78 record (166 BPM), but still slower than Miller's movie version in "Sunvalley Serenade". They play it even at 184 BPM tempo there.
Having played this in a band of similar size at a tempo slightly above this even, I say it can sound good played fast. The mix is terrible, granted, and one of the saxes is like a whole semitone flat, but dynamics wise it's unfortunately very likely that the sound guy had a compressor on the mix. It sounds a little like they are playing quietly in the quiet sections (I don't play sax so it's hard for my ear to tell but the trombones sounded low volume as far as tone goes). At any rate since a compressor basically says "it has to be at least this loud always but can't be any louder than that" subtle changes in dynamics are all but lost and big changes are hardly noticeable.
