Glenn Robinson: The ELITE scorer DRAFTED BEFORE Jason Kidd and Grant Hill | FPP

He became the most dominant player in the Nation during his time with the Purdue Boilermakers. His final season of his college career saw him lead the NCAA in scoring with over 30 points a game and take home every major individual award. It was also at Purdue where he would receive the “Big Dog” nickname from a school maintenance man. He would go on to be drafted first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1994 NBA draft. Glenn Robinson would seek the first $100 million dollar rookie contract in history, and even though he didn’t get that contract, his 10 year $68 million dollar deal would be the largest rookie contract of all time. This contract would also largely influence the rookie wage scale that was implemented the following summer. He would pair with forward Vin Baker to create a good looking duo and although Robinson led all rookies in scoring, he would finish as runner up for rookie of the year behind Jason Kidd and Grant Hill. The first 8 years of Robinson’s career would be spent as a key piece in the early 2000s Milwaukee bucks resurgence alongside Ray Allen and Sam Cassell, culminating in a heartbreaking and controversial Eastern Conference Finals loss. The team would fall apart after this with Robinson being shipped away to Atlanta due to conflict with head coach George Karl and a 2002 arrest. He would have a solid season in Atlanta alongside Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jason Terry, before again being traded to Philadelphia to play alongside Allen Iverson. Injuries would only allow him to play 42 games for the 76ers in about 2 years and he would be released and then signed by the San Antonio Spurs prior to their 2005 Title run.
Robinson would retire due to injuries after his championship with the Spurs. He left the game after 11 seasons with a career average of over 20 points per game as he was one of the best and most consistent scorers in the league during his career, even being named a back to back all star in the early 2000s. He spent his career in a small market and on top of that wasn’t the most marketable from a personality and playstyle perspective, then was quickly overshadowed by Ray Allen. But his old school game always got the job done and allowed him to maximize his contributions even as injuries quickly deteriorated his body. As a player, he is underappreciated, so today we’re going to take an in depth look at the career of the Big Dog, let’s jog your memory.

Not sure what the nameless jersey's about. i really liked that buck head logo(& purple/green color scheme) they went with in the mid90s. But it was kinda weird having a big buck head taking up the front of the jersey. They dropped that pretty quick. One of my fav NBA jerseys of all time were the early 90s Bucks unis. i wish i could score a Jack Sikma or Ricky Pierce Bucks replica jersey. i'd sport that on the court frequently.

“You should be happy to be in my presence I should charge you a fee, I’m Big Dog, Glen Rob, listen god you a flea” ~ Jay Z Blueprint 2 Glenn Robinson was a bucket getter. Mid range assassin. He could score on all levels. I almost forgot he got that title with my mob.. the Spurs in 05’ He was almost the last of the Bernard King type small forwards, Carmelo had that type of game, although he was a better shooter overall. The rugged offensive small forwards who could bully in the post, mid range assassin, good range in the 3, sneaky handles, great footwork, and a Dawg mentality. Back when the offensive roles where more defined.

Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson AKA Demar Derozan Alpha Version. Demar Derozan is known as the King of the Midrange but Glenn Robinson who was almost exact same size as Demar shot 10% more Midrange shots than Demar. Their games are so similar is wild. Big Dog was part of the Bucks Big 3 that SHOULD have made the finals in 2001 if the refs didn't rig the series for Allen Iverson the same way they did the following year for Lakers over Kings in 2002.

@@OnlyBuilt4FinancialContracts What do you mean Demar isn't a quarter of Big Dog? If you want to get technical Demar is a slightly higher rated player. I'm a lifelong Bucks fan from the 80's and I was so hyped when Bucks won the Lottery #1 overall pick. I didn't want Jason Kidd I wanted either Big Dog or Grant Hill. Big Dog delivered most of what he promised but Demar is technically a slightly better player. I thought Jason Kidd was bust because I saw him get beat in NCAA Tourny by tiny Wisconsin School UW-Green Bay. Demar is technically a little higher rated player. He's made 6 All-Star teams vs Big Dog's 2. Demar averages 2 ast a game more than Big Dawg. Demar has had a 28ppg season and a 27ppg season. Big Dogs best was 23.4ppg. Big Dog was a much better rebounder. Now both players shoot around 65% of all shots from midrange and make around 46% of them over their careers.

@@Wallyworld30 : respect. I’m almost 50 as well. My favorite player of ALL TIME is Magic Johnson. I’m a Lifelong Kings Fan. Respect to Derozan, but his 28ppg don’t make him a Marquee player or better than whomever. The NBA in the 80’s-90’s was different. You could hand check, etc. now you can’t even touch a player. Derozan would’ve been less than Average in a different ERA. Just my opinion. He aiight. Im definitely NOT impressed. Master P is my guy. Derozan was with No Limit first. Again, he aiight. I would pass on him as usual and keep it moving. 28ppg and 6 all stars for what? a boring Mid-Range game? He like Bradley Beal FR. Fluffed Stats in a Fluff Era. Grant Hill was clear cut Rookie of the year. Kidd got hot later, so Hill had to share the award. Milwaukee record wasn't good(only 34 wins). Kidd gave Dallas 38 wins(20 wins a year prior). It's Kidd & Hill🏆🏆

@@jaykaynum5569 You have your perspective and I have mine. The pistons record wasn't good ( only 28 wins) and Dallas only had ( 13 Wins a year prior not 20) (the bucks had 34 wins correct) so all three teams sucked That year and Again Big Dog should have won the award buddy. Big dog averaged 21.9 ppg 6,4 rebounds 2.5 assists 1,4 steals.in 80 games Grant Hill averaged 19.9ppg 6.4 rebounds 5.0 assist 1.8 steals in 70 games so how was he the clear cut Rookie of the year

@@Dantana773 He was liked. Plus he was the next Jordan. MJ left to play Baseball. It was all about GHill. He even made the All-star game(votes). Glenn wasn't getting any votes for ROTY. That's why Hill was definitely winning the award. I think Melo/James should've shared that award over Francis and Elton Brand. I'm just glad my favorite player win that award (Jason Kidd). Magic won a ring his first season. He still wanted that Rookie of the Year over Larry Bird. Glenn wanted the money. He didn't have a shot of winning that award over likable players like Kidd or Hill

@@jaykaynum5569 I orinally stated Glenn Robinson was not liked because he held out for that big rookie contract and the NBA did not promote him and the media always wote a negative narrative about him. But on that court as a rookie he was giving the league crazy work. It should be about what is done on the court not who is most liked. Again I feel Big Dog should have won the award.

Wisconsin resident and former bucks/nba fan. That eastern conference finals in 2001 was the last time I watched the NBA. It was so obvious it was rigged I just couldn't give it any time anymore.

Good for u! I'm not being a smart as.. I finally quit 4 or 5 years ago because I always knew it was WWE! I follow a little but won't watch. As a Bucks fan, the series against Iverson was SOOOOO FN SICKENING AND IBVIOUSLY RIGGED!!!! Part that sucks is that I quit watching games a little b4 Giannis and the Bucks won it all. As long as one knows it's WWE, then I don't think they are idiots for watching!

@@stormteam3004 Even the series prior against TMac and the Magic was just as poorly reffed but we won so it is slightly overlooked. But then it all started up again the next series with 76rs. I couldn't bring myself to watch anymore after that. Then it was all confirmed to me a few years later when that ref came out with a book blowing the whistle I'm all the rigged games. At that point I knew I'd made the right choice.

I was a big fan of players like Penny, Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, AI, Gary Payton, Vince, Kobe, T-Mac, Ray Allen. But I honestly couldn't grasp--- back in the day--- the "greatness" of Glenn Robinson. Yes, I was aware of him during that era. But I just wasn't enthused to watch him or follow his career. I guess it's because his game was simple and quiet, not flashy and loud. But he let his game & his stats speak. I didn't realize how great of an offensive player he was. He was kinda like a smaller version of Tim Duncan in the sense that he would "quietly" score 20, 25, 30 or more on you and you wouldn't even notice it. And I guess that's the legacy he left.

I remember him from Roosevelt high school, him and Winston Garland. Before then two, It was like Roosevelt didn't have a good player. But I think my man, Bernard millard and larry jones. In my days at Gary Roosevelt did a good job in the game.

Big dog torched the Big 10, and the Big 10 was STACKED during this time. Outside of Chris Jackson (LSU), he was the most incredible scorer I have seen in college basketball. IMO.

Before glen Robinson was Alex English, Bernard king and that guy who was a bad boy piston that got traded to the jazz who was a post monster and mid range assassin one dimensional great scorer. Nowadays it’s derozan, Rudy gay and Carmelo before them.
