Glider Pilot Shooting Through Gaps in Salt River Mountains

I am so excited to share gliding Wyoming's Salt River Mountain range with all of you! There are lots of scenes shooting through ridge gaps at speeds well over 100+ mph with the wing tips just feet away from trees. I share my decision making process to try and not kill myself up here in the mountains. It was pretty exciting in the cockpit and this video does a pretty good job sharing that excitement back on the ground.
The glider is a high performance ASW27B 15-meter (50 feet) wingspan racing sailplane. It is capable of flying 180 miles per hour and can glide 48 feet forward for every foot dropped. I took off from Logan, Utah during a fun mountain flying camp where we had 40 gliders come from all over the country to fly the mountains. This flight was the highlight of my week. Expect another video from this same flight going southbound while following my friends in their Arcus super ship glider. Thanks so much for watching and I always love to see your comments and questions! Bruno - B4

Bruno, this video inspired me to add a glider rating to my license. I took lessons throughout the northeast winter and completed the checkride last week. The first time I climbed above 5000 AGL I yelled in excitement in the tiny cockpit of a 1-26. Soaring is tremendous fun--thank you for the inspiration.

Noah - you just made my day. Thanks so much for saying hi. Congrats on your new rating!!! Soaring is simply amazing isn't it??? Come on out to Utah and let's fly the mountains together. I'll pay for the tow. ;)

I don't know how you felt after your off-field landing, but hopefully just unbelieveably lucky. At one point of my flying "career" when I was competing . I only saw my "failures", which made frustrated even after the most beautiful flights and I will never forget the pilot who landed next to me after a failed task. He heard me cursing and came to me with a huge smile in his face and said: "Don't look on your failures! Admit that you just have flown. Something humans have dreamed about for thousands of years, and we're the lucky ones, the first generation of humans being able to do so. If DaVinci were here and heard you complaining right now, he would probably beat you up" Great flying, keep going!

Another astoundingly cool flight in Utah!!! Bruno, you're a Godsend to the soaring community. As an experienced power pilot, but rookie glider rider I'm just in awe of what you do with your ASW-27 racer with its nearly 50:1 L/D. Wrapped up in your little cocoon of fiberglass and carbon fiber one minute you're coring a thermal at 45 mph and the next you've set negative flaps and you're racing to the next lift at 130 mph with less than 200 fpm sink. It's a miracle that we get to ride along with you!! I also loved that you mentioned your wife and kids as part of your risk management. I never considered that you had anything like a death wish, but it's good to see you've got your priorities in order. We definitely don't need to see the backside of the ridge if there's not a guaranteed "exit". We can save that view for the self launchers, eh? The more I watch your videos the more I realize just how much soaring is about energy management. It's really fascinating to watch you constantly managing that energy through the manipulation of your flaps, spoilers and pitch attitude. You are truly one with your glider. :) Thanks... :)

Thanks Bruno for the great new video. I used to enjoy sky sailing 50 years ago. LOL We had Schweitzer 222 ships. I foolishly switched to powered flight after logging about 25 hours in sail planes. Then I got married 47 years ago. Still married, broker than ever. Retired and living hand to mouth on SSI due to loss of nest egg 2007 stock market loss. I sure envy you and the expensive hobby of sky sailing. Love your new ships and all electronic displays. I learn much on thermaling and sky sailing. It will never do me any good but is soul satisfying as I fly along vicariously with you. By the way, you giggle when you come to tight spots. My wife thinks you sound exactly like Charls Shultz "Snoopy" dog character when he day dreams being the Red Baron while flying his dog house in the surly and bloody skies of World War I. LOL This is meant as a compliment. John Mahler

Rob nasty Sorry Rob, I know very little about this myself. My father used to do motored flight (pilots club member, where everyone shares/rents the planes) and I recall it being very expensive (just the license itself even). I imagine gliders aren't cheap either, pretty high-tec these days. I reckon the most affordable way to fly yourself is with "ultra-light" planes, which looks fun too.

I think there is a solution to the short battery life of the gopro. There are externel usb power packs, which could be used to power and/or reload the gopro inflight. It should also be possible to charge and record at the same time. You could store the powerbank in the storage compartment and connect it with a 1m usb cable with the gopro. I have not tested this arrengment, it's just an idea. Happy landings.

Bruno Vassel .. Just build a bigger battery. It would change the form factor of the back of the camera, but you aren't space-constrained. I would just strip the stock cell out of the stock battery, and solder a new, large, cell to the stock battery's connector.

How much money per month You need to afford this sport and enjoyment?
@BrunoVassel
@BrunoVassel 8 лет назад
It all depends on if you own your own glider or if you are part of a club. If you are part of a club, you can budget $1000-$1500 per year and get all the flying in you want. If you own your own glider, you can spend many times that per year. Let's just say gliding can fit your budget however much you want to spend.

+Bruno Vassel I took a couple of sailplane rides at our local club a few years back, excited to learn. What I learned was that I have severe motion sickness. So I had to let it go. I got into RC gliding which has been fine. Your amazing video allowed me to experience ridge running from the pilot's seat - really great! Thanks! (Plus, I love that part of Wyoming)

Thanks for the comments and I'm so sorry that you get motion sick flying. I've only seen a few RC gliders in action and it was really cool. Thanks for watching.

Great flying Bruno and wonderful scenery...Your videos (and Balleka's) over the last couple of years have inspired me to take up gliding, I am now in training at Beverly Soaring Society in Western Australia. Loving every minute of it...Thanks heaps for the inspirational videos guys. Bob

I ran across one of your videos today and have been enjoying the flights over your shoulder for the past couple hours in 1080hd and having a blast then it got even better when I put my Google goggles on and watched them again in full 3d. Amazing! Also great comintary, explaining what your doing and why you make certain decisions for those of us who aren't lucky enough to fly one. I'll be a life long subscriber to you. Keep it up, and fly safe Bruno. Thanks Ben.

Beautiful, wow. Same approach and locations as hang glider soaring...at 10X the speed. And of course tons more performance.
