Glider Skimming the Salt River Mountain Peaks

Ride along as a high performance glider / sailplane flies just feet above the mountain top rocks while enjoying a fun day out flying. The Salt River Mountains are located on the east side of Afton Wyoming's Star Valley. The glider is a 15 meter (50 foot wingspan) carbon fiber modern glider capable of flying 180 miles per hour and can glide 47 feet forward for every foot dropped. We look for areas of lift where the air is going up faster than the glider is descending so that is how we are able to fly many hundreds of miles and many hours in a day. I hope you enjoy the video! Bruno - B4

Thanks for talking so much... it felt more like we're all right there sitting in the cockpit with you. Really appreciate hearing about your thought/decision process. It is interesting to see how you make your decisions and how your plans evolve with the constant situational changes. All while enjoying that milliion-dollar view!

My brother, who lives in Tooele, told me Utah got a huge amount of snow in 22/23 winter. He was happy: he's a snowboarder. Because I watch your channel, I asked him if he saw gliders above the slopes and he said no, but his chosen ski resort many not be a range suitable to gliders.

Great video Bruno, haven't seen one of your videos in awhile. I used to watch your videos full screen all of the time during covid. It was a nice escape during that time locked in my house alone for long periods of time. Cheers and thanks!

Awesome! Thanks for taking RU-vid along with you! I'm super jealous! Been watching you for years now, my wife and daughter just watched this video with me for their first Bruno video. My 10 yr old said she would be too scared to fly a glider. 😂 I tried to explain the benefits of glide ratio in a glider versus a typical powered aircraft. Then it seemed safer. Safe flying!

I flew for many years out of Falcon Field, Mesa, AZ. There were mountains, the Superstitions to the North, and lakes and a river, the Salt River. Occasionally, there would be snow in the winter. I never remember any surviving into the summer months. It seems to me these mountains are more extensive and in another location. In addition to power, I did a lot of gliding but in the UK. You seemed to be flying much faster than I would have done to use ridge lift best. Nice shots, beautiful scenery.

Bummer the camera battery died. Those were some amazing shots Bruno - I could almost feel the rush when you were pretty close to the mountains. Did you ever have any awkward situations when you landed on someones property (field)? I reckon this can be very stressful not knowing you can make it to your destination - maybe that is also a rush and excitement while flying?

Wonderful video, amazing views, as usual. Is this the same glider as in the past, the instrumentation looks clearer. My only complaint is my usual one, four hours too short ;-) I read the FAA guidance for powered aircraft recently, while checking before commenting to someone who drove a Ford model A up Pike's Peak and they said oxygen above 10,000 during the day, and 5,000 feet at night. So applying the same rules in other areas, everyone driving in places like Denver should be on oxygen at night. Parachuting is boring after the first few seconds, but I've only done a couple of jumps and don't see any need to do more.

I wanted to ask you.. (I have never been in a real glider before), I do love to practice in MSFS and have learned a lot from you! When it comes to the flight stick, I know from watching that you want to have a loose grip (most of the time) to kinda feel out what the plane is doing. I often see just two fingers at times. So, this would lead me to think there is VERY little stick resistance (weight) on the flight stick. I ask because I am trying to build and tune my joystick to get as close as I can, lol. One thing I wanted to ask, is if you let go of the flight stick in real life, I'm guessing it will not "center" (like a typical joystick would), so does this mean the stick is "floppy" all the time and you need to constantly be holding it? Or, if you let go, it will just maintain that position? At home, I can change springs and dry clutches on my stick to try and come close. I can also remove my springs completely and just use some dry clutch resistance (stick kinda just stays where you put it), want to get something that is somewhat realistic.
@BrunoVassel
@BrunoVassel 8 месяцев назад
Great questions. You’re right there is very little stick forces, but the stick will self-center. Good luck!

Don’t you ever want to thermal in some of the 2k boomers you fly thru? Then you have altitude for recovery from stall/spin. I’m sure its more exciting to fly close, but the higher you are the more speed you can fly with right?
