A friend asked me to put together around 6 minutes of some of my favorite scenes I have taken when gliding / soaring around in my sailplane. Thought it might be fun to share. Hope you recognize these scenes from some of my other soaring videos. Pilot Bruno Vassel IV - B4 flying in a ASW-20B and ASW-27B 15-meter (50 feet wing span) sailplanes over Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.

Thanks for watching! I have landed in 10 farmers' fields in 18 years of flying gliders. If you don't push it and land out every once in a while you are not having as much fun as you could :) The glider dropped causing negative g's and the phone to go flying. Near the mountains you can get some strong pockets of air going in any direction. It is essential to keep your speed up to have enough energy to get out of anything mother nature has to throw at you. Thanks for watching and take care. Bruno

There can always be a surprise but these types of fields are cleared of all rocks and then rolled flat before they are planted so they can harvest the grain cutting down low to the ground. Thank goodness! :) Thanks for watching. Bruno

Great question. The glider most often does less than a dollar's worth of damage (virtually none) so the farmers I have met have just gotten a kick out of it and wanted to get pictures to show the relatives on Facebook. :) Bruno

During the summer time here we get some incredibly strong thermals rising directly over the ridges like you see here. They are huge lift generators when you stop and thermal up in them and are even bigger monsters of turbulence when you try to just fly through them. That is what happened in this video. Thanks for watching and best of luck on your training. Bruno

be glad you survived your off field landings. my father was flying in a contest in NM in 97 in his schemp hirth ventus 2b and died in an off field landing as have a few of the guys who flew with him.

Amen! I've never flown in the ASW-20B aircraft, but I've logged a dozen flights in the Blanik L23, and the feeling of flying in gliders, on a beautiful day is, just a phenominal feeling. Thanks for the upload!

I'm to nervous to become a good pilot, but i'm glad i tried it when i had the change, because like you say, it is a lot of fun. The moment in your video when you hit the updraft, would have probable scared me to dead, but it shows how intense this kind of flying can be. Thank for sharing your experience.

Congrats Christopher!!! I spent my first 100 hours in a 2-33 and still love flying them. Yes, the high performance ships are great too but I still get excited to fly in the 2-33 I trained in almost 20 years ago once or twice a season. Keep flying and enjoy all the first experiences you will be having for the next 20 years of soaring. They really never stop if you don't. Bruno

Hi from the UK. I last went gliding about 10 years go before a bigger mortgage and first child put and end to free time and money :). Watching your vids has rekindled my interest. I really would like to get back into this again, though I've only just managed to go solo before I stopped. It's a beautiful part of the world you're flying over to. Looks like the place I could move to if needed.

Hi Bruno! I'm a young glider pilot from the flat country of Denmark. I must admit, that I have in fact watched all of your videos, from start to end. Denmark is almost completely flat, so we only fly cloud/dry thermals, which is great - it's challenging and I love it. But you have convinced me that there is another side of gliding that I absolutely HAVE to experience; ridge/mountain soaring. I'm absolutely amazed by the scenery you fly in - you're pretty lucky, you know? ;) Cheers, Simon

So glad you have enjoyed them. The high grass landing was on the southwest side of Elkhorn peak north of Malad Idaho. Was very easy to get out. I had someone bring the glider trailer, we took the wings off in 20 minutes and we were out of there. Gliders are designed to land out in fields and as long as we don't hit something on landing like a fence or power lines there is usually not a single scratch on the glider. Bruno

Ahh... you bring back many fond memories. I've never seen a nasal cannula used for oxy before. I did my altitude diamond 25 years ago or so, in the Sierra wave just south of Inyokern, in a 1-26C... no mask, just sucking oxy from a tube like drinking from a straw ... I wish I'd had a cannula then, could have kept my free hand warm by sitting on it. ;)

when the wind blows onto an obstacle (in this case a mountain) it is forced to rise on the front side. that's where you can find lift. on the back side of the mountain, the air gets really turbulent and you get lots of sinking there (it's called a 'rotor').

The sound you hear is an "electronic variometer". It measures the amount of lift the glider is receiving. The stronger the thermal lift, the higher the pitch which indicates stronger/faster lift. The lower the pitch indicates less lift.

Very strong turbulence. My friend was flying right in front of me and hit it first. A few seconds later I then hit it. In the mountains you get strong pockets of air. This was an example of "hitting" one.

Most people don't understand that gliders and go many hundreds of miles in a single flight, fly in air currents where they gain many thousands of feet at a time and can fly often faster than 150 mph over the ground. Go take a glider ride for yourself and find out what they can do! :) Bruno

That silver device was an old ipaq 3975 connected to a gps and running a moving map soaring program called SeeYou Mobile. It really helped to let you know where you were and how far you could glide to given the current air conditions. Thanks for watching. Bruno
@BrunoVassel
@BrunoVassel 11 лет назад
Hi Matt, It depends on if you start your training in the mountains or not. If yes, your instructor will help you to know your limits and help you be safe. If no, I would recommend at least 100 hours in the glider you are flying before taking it out to the mountains. It depends on the pilot. Some pilots are still not safe after 500 hours. ;) Mountain flying can be quite rewarding but I have also had a close friend die hitting a mountain as well. With proper training, mountain flying can be safe.

Hey Bruno your videos are amazing and I enjoy watching them and thanks for all the time and effort editing and making them. I'm kind of an adrenaline junkie I've skydived I scuba dive. done questionable things on my street bike, with all those things now the wife it gets scared. She hates it when I skydive! So I problem need to give it up. but I really enjoyed your gliding videos and looking forward to gliding in the future are most gliders able to do acrobatics or would I need to look for a special type thanks again for all your hard work to help the glider community.

Thanks for watching and for the kind words. I have missing skin patch on various parts way back when from a CBR F2.. ;) A good number of gliders can do some fun acrobatics like loops and wing overs so yes, don't let that stop you from giving it a try! You will end up finding out that even without the acro, gliding is crazy fun. I have jumped from a place 3 times and actually get a bigger rush gliding than when I jumped. Take a ride!!!

Yes, the motive was that I ran out of lift and this glider does not have an engine. Mother nature was demanding I land whether I wanted to or not. That field was the best option around. Nothing was damaged and gliders are made to land in fields like that and then we take the wings off and trailer them back to the airport.

The sound is the vario, telling the pilot if he's going up or down as he flies through wave. You can see the instrument just on the right of centre. Good gliders can easily come in over $100k, trainers much less. From a field landing your "crew" come with the trailer, the wings detach.
