Bangles - Glitter Years (Live from Santa Clara CA 9/2/89)
Recorded live at the Redwoods Amphitheatre, Santa Clara CA, the final show of their 'Everything, Everywhere' Tour. This show would become notable as being the Bangles last performance together prior to their initial break-up several months later.
I've compiled all of the Bangles "Best In (Live) Show" tracks into five different volumes for download on Mediafire. This one is part of volume 3 which covers the 'Everything, Everywhere' tour of 1989 with selections from the Road Party event near Houston, Texas, as well as the last night of the tour in Santa Clara CA on September 2, 1989. That show would become the last performance by the band until their reunion in 2000.

Very cool hearing how the 'better hang onto yourself' part sounds with Michael singing it in her natural voice rather than her Bowie impression... which amusingly fooled some Bowie fans online into thinking the Bangles had got Bowie to do guest vocals on the song.

ShaneSamsa/ Well, this was 1989 so there weren't that many fans online -- rumors had to spread in fanzines and radio stations.

This song ... ahhh ... it really reminds me what it felt like to be just a little bit outa control as I was back then .... even in the midst of many bad decisions, and a lot of pain, it was my youth, I was strong and a fire burned in my gut, and I felt the passion and ecstasy of rock n roll so deeply. Failed to worship the Goddess was a slave to Dionysius ..... HAH!

Santa Clara CA- 1989..............Could this possibly be the LAST concert the Bangles performed? Just going by the "Behind the Music- The Bangles" episode.

Definitely a wasted hit single. Much better than "Be with you"... it should have been the third single.

They should have issued a double A-side single of "Glitter Years" and "Crash And Burn." That's right, a complete non-Susanna single. Susanna was great but way way too many of her bubblegum-Muzak songs were pushed as singles. (And That wasn't really her fault, but the producers and song doctors brought in to "help" her.)

Here is the thing, The record producers wanted Sue as the lead, Why ? two reasons, 1) her eyes and 2) because Prince supposed wanted her. You listen to Susanna Sing by herself with no back up and she is as my grandmother used to tell me "Weak as Hen's Pee" She doesn't have the chops to carry it by herself/ Now listen to Micheal Sing without back up. (Crash Wisdom or the sandy denny tribute) and Micki would Rip Susanna a new one musically and beauty wise! I am hopelessly totally utterly Devoted to Micki even to the point of pissing off other Bangles fans. All I can hope for is that She will either come back and save the Bangles from themselves or that she would release one of those unreleased albums of hers/

@@jsoward1 Yeah right. I respect your opinion, and I do love Michael Steele and I do believe that the producers and the label pushed to much to make Susanna appear as "lead singer" something that Susanna herself has corrected many an interviewer saying that the Bangles had no "lead singer". But the harmonies created by Michael, Vicki, and Debbi, who have deeper voices the three of them, making for a richer harmony, allowing Susanna's higher pitched, sweeter quality voice to stand out, created a sound that characterized many of the Bangles' hit singles. In other words, Susanna always sounded better when accompanied by the other Bangles. Nevertheless, and this is where the "Susanna bashers" get P.O.ed, it was that sound, with Susanna in the lead on those particular songs that put the Bangles on the map. "Manic Monday", "Walk Like an Egyptian" (where everybody remembers that third verse and Susanna's finale, and with all do respect for Vicki and Micki, both of whom I love and respect, as Simon Cowell would say, were just forgetable), "If She Knew What She Wants", "Walk Down Your Street" , "In Your Room", and of course "Eternal Flame" all followed that formula and the proof was in the pudding. "Hazy Shade of Winter" was the song where they made those four part harmonies shine, no lead singer at all. Susanna did a great part in making the Bangles popular. Without her it just wouldn't have worked. She was frontman, or frontwoman, or frontperson. Could they have made more hit singles had they used other leads. Of course. "September Girls" with Micki as lead comes to mind. "Ask Me No Questions" with Debbi from the album Doll Revolution is another. And there's more, but underestimating Susanna's importance just isn't fare. "I'll Set You Free", especially the version released in the UK and in their Greatest Hits album, and "I Will Take Care of You" from Doll Revolution could both have been great singles with Susanna at lead. As for that "hen's pee" analogy, you can't listen to a Bangle's song performed by Susanna alone. When you listen to "My Side of the Bed" from her album "When You're a Boy" , or "Unconditional Love" (a Cyndi Lauper cover) from the same album, hen's pee she ain't. And if you really want to measure her caliber as an interpreter, I suggest listening to her version of "The Look of Love" by Burt Bacharach for the movie "Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery". In the album appears Dusty Springfield, but in the movie, and the recording that's available here on, RU-vid, it's Susanna. And she nails it, no back up singer at all. As for the suggestion that the producers put her as "lead singer" in 1989, just because Prince had the hots for her back in 1985, that's just ludicrous. They may would have preferred her as lead because thousands of fans had the hots for her. They were the ones buying the cassettes and CDs anyway. I do love Michael and she bought more weight and experience to the group, and she had a special on stage chemistry with Susanna, and it isn't the same without her. They were a team, and a team is greater than the sum of their parts. But missing Michael doesn't mean we underestimate Susanna's importance. With all do respect.
