Edward Said was the person who guided me as I tried to understand what was happening in the Middle East. This is a beautiful conversation.. Given what is happening in the region at the moment, we could use a man like this to help us understand.. Hamas exists because no one has been listening to the Palestinian experience. No doubt the experience of Jews following World War II has been captivating and on some level inspiring. A "land without people for a people without land" was a compelling fiction and many of us embraced it. The violence eventually prompted us to ponder deeper questions, including what about the people who actually lived their for hundreds of years before the Zionists mobilized their forces? Edward Said helped me when those questions arose for me. I miss him sorely.

I am not a middle eastern nor a westerner. I started reading about middle east in 2021. The more I read the more I understand and I become sad. I can now connect the dots between what happened in the middle east post ww2 and what lead to 9/11 and how the western leaders have been funding the 75 year long brutal occupation. Most of its history US have been in war in order to keep the interests of its oligarchs. US supported so many genocides. The Bangladeshi genocide, the Vietnam wars and Iraq war and so on. So much death and destruction. I am glad that the people outside the western sphere are coming to the understanding who are the real terrorists. Hoping for the US empire to go like the British and hoping for a free Palestine from river to the sea.

I’m grateful for being able to listen to an interview like this. The occupation of the Palestinian people didn’t simply dispossess them of their land and property. It has also sought to erase the existence of the Palestinians as a people. Former Israeli PM Golda Meir herself once stated, “There were no such thing as Palestinians...They did not exist.” Had this happened hundreds or thousands of years ago, it would not be extraordinary since similar injustices have happened to many other peoples in the past including the Native Americans. But the fact that it happened practically yesterday, and that we as Americans were complicit in these injustices being carried out should provoke outrage in everyone that believes in freedom and the right of a people to self-determination.

I would point out that the Israel Palestine story spans two world wars, hence two post war 'reorganisation' & reconstruction periods, the Bolshevik revolution & rise of the USSR, the defeat & dismantling of the 400 year old Ottoman empire, the decline & demise of the British empire, & the rise of the new global power, the USA, & the extended Cold War. Not to mention the historical movements of ppl & power shifts of a location between Egypt, Europe, Persia, Babylon, Greece & Arabia, the rise of Islam, & the endless conflict bw the two most powerful religions of the last 1500 years, the Crusades etc. If it any wonder that simplistic modern notions such as self determination haven't prevailed? You do know that nation states are quite new things, that most of those established post wars failed, that millions of ppl were displaced, forcibly relocated etc by the winners ... Do you know how many Germans & Poles had to move after WW2, how many died when Pakistan was created, how many Stalin relocated etc? Compared to those upheavals the tragedy of Palestine, even the deliberate violence of it, was minor. In addition, 73,000 dwelling rooms in *abandoned?_*_ Arab houses and 7,800 shops, workshops and storerooms became ownerless in towns and villages._ *Bank accounts estimated to total up to 5 million Palestinian pounds and left in Arab and non-Arab banks were frozen by the Israel government. Abandoned Arab dwellings in towns have also not remained empty. By the end of July 1948, 170,000 people, notably new immigrants and ex-soldiers, in addition to about 40,000 former tenants...have been housed in premises under the custodian’s control; and 7,000 shops, workshops, and stores were sublet to new arrivals. The existence of these Arab houses - vacant and ready for occupation - has to a large extent, solved the greatest immediate problem which faced the Israeli authorities in the absorption of immigrants.
