Global Junk Food: How the Fast Food Industry is Making Poor Countries Fat | Investigative Documentary from 2016
In Europe, food manufacturers have signed up to ‘responsibility pledges’, promising no added sugar, preservatives, artificial colours or flavours and not to target children. So why are they using tactics banned in the West in the developing world? There, they have created ultra-low-cost products with higher levels of salt, sugar and saturated fats. Filmed in Brazil, India and France, we investigate the new tactics of brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza.

My weight Fluctuates every few years. At my highest weight I was 148 lbs. 148 lbs may not seem like a lot but I’m 5’0” and was well on my way to looking like a little butterball. I also found that I could not get back to what I considered my normal weight of 107 lbs - 110 lbs. I found the sweet spots of 119 lbs - 125 lbs where I look healthy and my body was toned and I radiated a healthy glow. Continued good luck to you. Always remember and never forget. That's how it's like here in Norway, bringing the kids out to eat some hamburgers or pizza very rarely, at special occasions. Homemade food is still the dominant (and better tasting) option, and I don't see the kind of obesity here that I see for example in videos that show average people in USA, where obese people seem to be almost the norm, instead of the extreme. American "junk food" is available here, but more popular is Italian and the focus on quality raw materials and really tasty food instead of just sugar and fat.

I love that my parents made the effort to cook and to teach us how to cook. You save hundreds of dollars each and every meal and the quality is superb. Much better than anything offered in fast food restaurants. It's quite expensive when you consider the nutritional content and how long it actually fills you up, which isn't that much. Add on the costly medical bills due to poor health that come up later in life if all you eat is fast food, and it's actually really expensive

@colechapman6976 Год назад
@@Legend1148 Plus, you save hundreds of dollars via leftovers. When my parents would make salmon lets say, we usually have leftovers. Going out, to feed all of us, that salmon dish would be 25 per person, and there is five of us. @@Legend1148 Even fast food staples like burgers are cheaper if you make it yourself when you factor in all the costs. At Mcdonalds, you only have to pay like 3-5 dollars for a burger. But how much meat do you really get? It's paper thin and the size of a small CD. Not much value. Making burgers at home means it's actually made of meat, it's bigger quantities, and you don't waste gas going to the fast food place. I'll forever thank my mother for choosing me to learn her cooking. She knew she was dying and she told me that I would have to learn to cook for the family. She taught me how to cook so many things from green chili to hand rolled noodles. I remember it all, I don't remember the exact amount of spices and whatnot but the actual labor of cooking for a big family, that I do remember and cook for myself, my roommate, and my girlfriend whenever they are all over at my house. I think it's funny when I cheat and cook Ramen noodles and add some vegetables, proteins(like eggs or steak sometimes SPAM), and spices and they think I've made a 5 star dish but really it's actually an extremely bastardized and lazy dish I'll make when I'm worn out after work. That statement about, "From no food to bad food" is so true. And it's a shame coz you can't necessarily price fast food up. So ultimately it'll always be a cheap go to option for people who are poor or simultaneously across the demographics when you want a quick meal. Coz even for me before I started eating a lot healthier I found myself eating fast food a lot because of lifestyle, where I'd just be too busy to care about cooking coz I'd come home late from work and so it was easy to just grab fast food be it a cheap meal or a more expensive meal. But eventually I started eating a lot healthier and doing even meal preps to stop myself from getting into that habit of coming home late from work and just going for fast food rather than warming up a meal from prep. It's gonna be one of those things that I don't think we'll ever get under control necessarily coz even with the whole healthy choice movements some people aren't fortunate enough and have other things to worry about that may then lend to unhealthy eating habits. Hopefully though it eventually goes back into what it originally was of being like a special occasion sort of thing and not a "imma eat this every other day" kinda thing 🙏🏿❤️

Education should be Brazil and other countries in a similar situation first and only priority at this stage. It's the only way to combat an issue like this. Even as a kid here in the states I knew junk food wasn't healthy, despite it being advertised as simply meat, cheese and bread. That was due to education though and my parents knowing such. I wish Brazil the best with this problem. It's going to be an uphill battle, especially with how addicting fast food and junk foods are.

Great video. Heartbreaking. Thankfully there are people that are working on solving the problem. When I was a child in Perth, Australia Coca came to Perth with Coca Cola's yo-yo. That became my favorite toy and I carried it with me everywhere. I drank only Coke during my entire childhood. Fortunately I got plenty of exercise since we had no TV at the time. For lunch we all ate fish and chips or a meat pie. At thirteen I came to Chicago. It took me years to get used to American food. I ate mostly Czech food which is also unhealthy. but at least it was not junk food. Eva

This was a good and worrying documentary. For me though I really think parenting is key. For example in the 90s/early 00s I remember Nabisco having a games website and it was very fun. But the amount of junk food in my house didn't suddenly multiply after I started playing those games. Also regulating the amount of time kids spend on games is another think parents should do. Junk food and games are fine in moderation. The moderation comes from the parents as they instill healthy mental and physical habits for their kids. This shouldn't be that hard.

As an Indian I know how these western fast food made a big hit there. They never entered india as a cheap brand. They entered as something which only the “elite” can afford, hence making it a temptation and attracting the middle and low income groups to see that as a treat to take once in a while. I still remember the Dominos pizza costed exactly the same we pay in Italy ( am settled in italy and married to an italian) Done this, they reduced the price after making their brand name famous. It’s like Armani selling his designer wear worth 400€ for 20€..!! People in India felt they were eating luxury food, clean and healthy, meant only for the rich and elite. Not forgetting that Indians still have the British Raj syndrome where anything western is seen as totally trustworthy. India has the best traditional foods and traditional food in india is cheapest compared to the rest of the world. A whole thali, which is a dish with rice, bread and numerous veggies you can eat for as less as 50 Rupees ( almost 50 cents) in certain restaurants. Not mentioning the even cheaper street food, most not so hygienic but still a lot healthier than the chemical filled burgers and pizzas. We need to bring awareness to Indians through social media and I hope government starts taking this as something serious and starts implementing new food quality regulations, like we have here in Europe. However, I don’t think this trend will last long, since we Indians love our traditional food and am sure they trend will take a U turn soon. Keeping fingers crossed..

I'm Swedish, which is often classified as Western, even though there are several things that don't match how people from the West are and how Nordic countries are. One thing I am very grateful for is that in Sweden, what we call, American food is still a indulgence. It's not something you eat often, maybe once a month and even that's a bit much. We cook most of all the food we eat which, I think, is one of the main reasons why Sweden ranks 96th out of 190 countries when it comes to obesity. That said, I see more and more of it coming here and I hope that the trends can turn.

I agree. But sometimes it is the other way round. My daughter who is just 12, wants things or want to do things that I beleive she is too young for or that it is not safe for her. So far I am managing to convince her but when she looks at her friends, she finds their lifestyle more appealing. Lets just take the example of a smart phone. I dont beleive that a 12yr should have one. It is not only safe but she doesnt even need it at this age. Our children are becoming like adults at 12. When I discuss with her friends parents - those that are sensible - tell me that they are losing control over their kids. One of the reason is the new laws - schools are asking children if their parents are mean with them, spank them (of course I am against abusif parents but ffs a slap is not abusive) and so on.. when children see that society is with them, they rule their parents. Some adults are messed up in the head and some, genuine ones, are losing control and they are not at fault. Basically, we are builing a VERY f**ked up society for our children
