@@iamjaydennn woah that's great... my highschool ended 2020 but till now our countries versions GAOKAO Isn't starting for pandemic... 2 years of our life are getting wasted :3
This was how life used to be during my high school years in Philippines. But the system is so corrupt that government agencies do not hire graduates based on their mental capability but based on whom they know from the inside. Which makes all these learnings seem pointless because at the end of the day, you can't get a great future for being smart in your home country. If things were like this everywhere and government values the best students, every country will have a clean and excellent government with employees working for their honor and not for greed. And people wonder why China developed so fast? Government is composed of people too. If you put people in position who aren't even qualified on the first place for reasons like their family is influential, they're famous celebrity, they buy their way in, they're friends, etc; then what you get is substandard practice. Just look at the roads in Philippines. No, not the build3x projects but the roads before that. You think it's normal to have cracked roads for decades? Wake up people of the Republic of Philippines. 🇵🇭
Well, take a look at malaysia... The so called bumiputra got full access into public uni and government jobs where us minorities has to fight like hunger games to get in. Mind you,its 10% admission for minorities only. Meaning 100% admission for bumiputra (aka natives although its debatable because they are originated from Indonesia.) but only 10% admission for minorities aka chinese and indians.. Technically 110% overall. Bruh, do you know how super genius you need to be in the 10%? Housing and funding for bumiputra..government jobs for bumiputra...bruh, how blatantly unfair and racist can they be. Is so in your face. Is 2021 *Yet*, they still practice such blatant racism and favorism to a certain race. Native people of the land? They all are Indonesians. They are immigrants too ya know. Just saying... If this was a different country ex. The states. It will be a whole different story.
For those Chinese students who fail the gaokao exam, they can go to universities in the US or Australia. It's very easy to get admitted to a decent accredited American university if they can afford the tuition.
And for those that can't afford tuition? I assume they just work in the trades/or some other job in the workforce until they can save up enough money to consider education elsewhere?
@@kennawhitty5884 yes, if students failed Gaokao this year, they can try next year in China, but at the same time, they will study under heavier pressure.
Apparently 1 in 60,000 Gaokao students gets into a local university. That explains why Chinese 15 years old have beaten world records in the past few years for maths and science.
No, almost 50 to 60% of students will go to universities, In cities, the rates are even higher but if they want to go to top 50, the rate will drop to 5%
The system produce tremendous pressure on student, they pretty well have to memorized every subject connection with GAOKAO, narrows their scope of thinking, limited the students’ mind and activity, that’s why most of the Chinese student are very good in math and science but lack of common social skill. China should build more higher learning institutions instate of pressure to students.
I agree. Gaokao will give you PTSD. Trust me, i am Asian and we also have a similar national exam, just not as strict and competitiveness as gaokao, still it makes many students to commit suicide or be more rebellious because of social and family pressure.
i am sure that if their education system were not as strict as other first world asian countries like japan, korea and singapore then most likely they would end up like other third world countries in asia.
I think the main reason is that China lacks financial resources. Developed countries provide blue-collar workers with stable and decent jobs. But what about China? With a large population and significant economic disparities, many people aspire to become white-collar workers in companies. Only when we develop further will more people have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
This is the fairest test of meritocracy. You can be low-born and still be elected president based on your merits. It’s not about looks or money. It’s all about ability.
When you go to school and then spend the rest of your day working to help your family, when schools have such a large difference in quality of teaching, it is not fair at all. Where I live we have ENEM which is similar to gaokao, it is used to get access to public colleges, and if there weren't reservations of 50% of the spots to poor, bipoc, public school students and disabled, about 95% of the spots would be filled with white rich students who can pay for private colleges, but want the prestige of public ones. Then these people would be stuck in an endless cycle of: Parents can't study = can't send their kids to college = children don't study = their children can't go to college Because here public colleges are 100% free to attend, and they even help with transportation, housing and meals so students can keep up with the classes without having to work their asses of to pay for basic stuff, which would cause bad grades and expelling.
To me, rich will always find a way to get through hardships easier but I think we need to consider the alternative. What if not Gaokao? With the test being so widely recognized, even those without money have motivation to fight for their future. Having money vs. not having money is not fair in itself so is there really a point in criticism?
Fair enough to have this system, but China should also provide alternative ways to have a place in other higher educational institutions which will make the overall system still fairer since it gives those who have not succeeded a second chance in life.
Gaokao is a good way to select students but on the other hand it puts lot of pressure on students. The students in high school spend around 14-15 hours in school, and this is causing of psychological problems for those who couldn't pass it..I have got an experience of teaching in one of the high school where i noticed that the pressure is too much on them..they dont have enough time to sleep because of long school hours, specially the combine reading or reciting system..i think Gaokao should be conducted in after every 3 months or should be like GRE or other related tests.. so the students with poor grades can apply again...
If a student can not bear such a pressure, why do you think he or she is qualified for the university studying? Isn't it a good measure (whether can bear the pressure or not) to determine the overall evaluation of a student?
@@yhj2580 dear! There should be measures to evaluate the students ability..but do you think the 15-16 hours remaining in school is good for them? sitting in one place for the whole day is not good for them..they should have enough rest, which is recently also said in the central govt notification that high school students should sleep 8-9 hours..i think all over the world the maximum school hours are 6-7 hours and I think these are more than enough..if they have more free time in the afternoon then can self study which can be very good for them..
to be in USA is not a success i think because if you study English you can go there..there should be less burden on students, teachers and parents...@@angelchung5670
Im vietnamese . im going to make an important exam to go to university . I have to learn from early morning to midnight like this girl. I feel so depressed ...

*The Nigerian version is called LAMB. Only once a year to take it. I remember taking mine while seated next a dude saying it was 4th try....meaning he had been going for 4yrs*
Is Gaokao the only university entrance exam in China? Like in India, there are several entrance exams like JEE main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, and many others like CET, VITEEE, WBJEE, etc.
GaoKao is the only government assured exam. Bitsat vitee and all these are for private colleges. Jee advanced is optional but the exam of jee advanced has already been taught in previous classes in China so gaokao is a mix of mains and advanced where 1% of them get into tier 1 colleges, from what I know, there are 4 rounds of mains and 2 for advanced but you can only attend GaoKao once a year. Being a dropper in india is not that big of a deal but in China students are considered stupid to try again.
@@shehzadahmed693 You are comparing the wrong exams. Gaokao in China is like 12th Boards in India. But no entrance exams, the way we too used to have in the early 90s, 80s in India where you got into college solely based on 10th, + 12th marks.
As a Chinese student, let me tell you the truth. Almost every day in school, if you don't do well in exams, you will be excluded from physical education and other side courses, which will be used as the main class. At school, you will be scolded by teachers, at home by parents, and you will be beaten. Moreover, the food in the cafeteria is not eaten by people. I really don't know why Chinese education is like this
The amount of stress they are having is just unimaginable . We indians also fight tough exams but atleast we have options or atleast an exam doesn't decide our future here . They doesn't have any I can only wish them best and best for this exam and future
I heard that"THE PRESSURE MAKES THE DIAMOND" i have a question that it is true? Due to the pressure that every students in china have been endsuring, they are very excellent so they can pass the entrance exam is not luckey but disciplined. The current state of education in china still works like that. But senior of mine alway want to study abroad china, try to get into Beijing university, stinghua university but they can attend those colleage they all are excellent and smart
I wish they can allow student to take the GaoKao Exam every 4 months so students get more chances in a short amount of time to make it to university. I also wish student can take the GaoKao at 17 because applying for university at a younger age gives you more chances to take the GaoKao. Most important I wonder is there any break time in the GaoKao exam?
Chinese students already taking the hard GaoKao exam meanwhile me a third grade Chinese going to fourth grade in Europe haven’t even took my first real exam 🤣😅
This system is inhumane, you can’t force someone who isn’t adult yet to study for more than 12 - 16 hours a day, especially if they’re children which they ARE.
Thank you for the positive comments and may God The Father bless these kids through Our Lord Jesus Christ His Son and in Our Lord Jesus Christ Holy Name Amen.
China strong! Gaokao good! No one ended their life because of this test! Everyone has equal chance! Even if you live in village mountain and don’t have resources!
Okay lets see. So after these students graduate university, they end up in a hyper competitive job market that only pays 7000 RMB a month which is 1,081 USD. Now you look at a McDonalds employee in the U.S making 15/hr after taxes is 1950 USD/month which is equal t o 12,600 RMB/month. Funny.
High school students need college entrance examinations, junior high school students also need high school entrance examinations, junior high school students, and now they are taking exams every day, and they are really crazy (translation)I am a student in grade 8
China is kinda interesting because here in the U.S having good family income/status gives you education but in china education gives you good family income/status. Like how money here gives you power but over there power gives you money.
You have to pay to get into high school. You don’t have to in America. America looks at multiple variables including extracurricular as, personal essay, and educational merit as well. China, it’s just the exam that makes or breaks your future
@@jaslavie This seems hypocritical like isn't higher education free for them if they work hard. Hell most schools here in the u.s don't even provide free lunch and we based everything on test as well. Then the whole variable point doesn't make sense since schools in general have multiple classes
@@RandomUser-tj3mg But that's a private tutor not the actual school system that you are paying; like the same can be said about any country if you add a private tutor to the cost of education
Two third of the current cohort wants to go to state subsidise university. So factories will have less hands to rely on. Employing so many is a major effort now in China. 😌
Without passing this exam you can't get into *any* college in China. Also 1 in 60k gets selected for local university... Sooo there is an excess of people who can work in fields actually.
@@anozatix1022 Most of them were brainwashed to go to university since young. Even avg stude TS work harder than most students in the world. They are often suffer from depression not being able to acheive their goal and are less likely to be productive workers.
it is the fairest way for universities to select candidates, because it removes bribery. kids from poor backgrounds can get to go to top universities based on their intelligence, rather than rich kids taking up all the spots. Once again, another great strategy by CHina to ensure its people all get the same chance to live a better life!
So she basically want to get out of this beautiful mountain village covered with trees and Nature to get a job in a overpopulated Smokey polluted city with high crime rate
In my country, the standard for "GaoKao" is very low. Even other primate species such as chimpanzees, orangutans or gibbons can pass the exam. That's why university or college students in my country spend more of their time on rallies, demonstrations and brawls than studying.
Indonesia? It was very difficult one in the past. But the government degrade the test each year cause of the complaint from the parents. When the most of the student can't pass the exam, Indonesian Government is not trying to upgrade the students, the Government rather adjust the exams difficulties to meet the students standard. Welcome to Indonesia.
Bullshit, the Gaokao is so difficult some parents chose to send their children abroad so they don't have to make the Gaokao. I mean they literally spend years to prepare this exam
