Glossy Vs. Matte Screen Comparison on Laptops

A question that often comes up in purchasing a laptop is what's the difference between a glossy and matte screen? Which is better? Depending on your preferences and usage, one might be better than the other. For business users the matte screen option is generally better as it reduces glare and reflections, both of which can be a big issue when staring at the screen for hours at work. If you want to use your laptop to watch movies though, the glossy screen helps to enhance colors and could be preferable. This video shows the difference between a matte screen on a Lenovo ThinkPad and glossy screen on the Apple MacBook Pro.

I do 3d design/animation. I usually head to scenic spots to park and do work. Glossy is a nightmare but it's rich in beauty. Matte is a blessing but lacks the pop in color. So it depends how you use it. I prefer glossy but sometimes when I work with a matte screen... I get this weird sense of relaxation and focus better. I think it's due to knowing I don't have to bob my head around to remove the reflection on certain parts of the screen. Compared to matte, any angle is 100 fine. So I'm always torn on both. I'm about to buy a new workstation laptop that only comes with a matte, used it for 1 week already and I can tell you for my line of work and office is litteraly outside nature, matte us the best choice. I will miss the pop of glossy but won't miss the constant adjusting to remove the reflections.

Ok i have a Lenovo laptop with a glossy screen but here's my take: What i like: better color reproduction, darker black, make things seem a bit HD-ish because of the sharpness or reflection of the surface. What i don't like: obviously too reflective especially in daylight, and no anti-glare feature.

how can you compare two different screens, one of them is IPS (the macbook one) and the other not, or am I wrong? I think the comparison of reflections is fair, I think the comparison of colors etc... is not, since it are different screens.

thank you sir! now I understand the reflective nature of glossy screens better. I'll get a matte screen, because I want healthy eyes while using the screen for long periods of time. Reflections interfere with the ability to clearly recognize what you're looking at. Thus eye strain is more prevalent.

I've always been in the glossy camp. The main reason (which I don't think was mentioned), text is sharper as there is no light scrattering. 2nd reason, the blacks are black...not difused to gray.
@junkiexl86
@junkiexl86 10 лет назад
That used to be a problem in the past years. I am running 3 27inch Asus monitors, all of which are Matte. my blacks are pure true blacks. Im sure some of the cheaper matte monitors or generic brand monitors have the issue you are talking about, but from the newer ones all the blacks I see are true black. Text is also sharp as can be.

Actually, it would help if the screens weren't pointing almost directly at the ceiling lights. In most cases the gloss screens are loads better as far as color vividness, just adjust the screen angle.
@LaptopReviewsDotCom
@LaptopReviewsDotCom 9 лет назад
Patrick Musson Good point, although my issue with glossy screens is it all depends on your environment as to how easy they are to view, if you're in an office / classroom and have a strong light behind you (such as a window or fluorescent lighting) then you're out of luck. If you're at home and can easily adjust lighting and position you are in the room, less of a big deal.

I just got a matte screen laptop after years of having glossy and I was in shock how poor the quality of the display is. Even on this video you can spot the texturized/pixelated image, reminiscent of a very low resolution gif. Matte screen makes even the highest HD video look like a crappy gif. I usually only use my laptop in my room with low lighting and glare has never been an issue, nor have I ever had headaches or anything like that. I guess Matte would be good for using the laptop outdoors or in the sun, but definitely not a good choice

I think I've been here before... But, well, I have a Sony Vaio VPC F-236 FM, and its a 16,4" inches FHD screen that doesn't "glare" too much, but its not like a Samsung I saw one of these days. It looked like someone took a piece of sandpaper and rubbed it on the screen. Surely, one could work on the outside, but I wonder who would want to, it looked so ugly I can't even imagine having that thing. So, for that Samsung, sandpaper screen, and for some other notebook, mirror screen... In which category would that Sony Vaio fit?

I like Matte for coding, writing, and most work stuff and Glossy for media and web design stuff. Have two external displays matte and glossy best of both worlds. If you spend most time gamer or media glossy is better. If you spend most time writing or working matte is better.
@peppeddu
@peppeddu 8 лет назад
I could be wrong but I think that most people don't do all the time video/photo editing that require the color accuracy of a glossy screen, besides, if you that kind of work you may want to plug in an external bigger monitor anyway. For everything else, matte will outweight glossy big time. Personally I would love an iPhone with a matte screen, but I know that ain't gonna happen.
@TabalugaDragon
@TabalugaDragon 7 лет назад
it's not just better for photo and video eiding, glossy screens have better colors in general.... I've been using both for many years and colors on glossy ones are far more vivid and better-looking, while mat screens look dull and lifeless. I wish Dell XPS 15 2016 and 2017 models had a glossy version for 1080p screens, but I guess that's never gonna happen? cause they only have glossy version for impractical 4k screen.
@peppeddu

TabalugaDragon Actually I do think that glossy is a far better quality, but I am really bothered when I see something reflected on the screen and since I use my laptop pretty much everywhere I prefer matte. I can't appreciate the quality of the picture or even concentrate when I clearly see people walking behind me on the screen (while in a coffee shop), but that's just me, some people may feel different.

I'd say for entertainment glossy but for office work matte. Decades ago it's discovered that the reflections in the screen would ruin your eye sight as you cannot "decide" which picture to focus: your work on the monitor or the things going on beyond it - behind you...

Both glossy and matte will essentially look the same under controlled conditions. The problem here is that the monitors use different panels. One uses a TN panel while the other appears to use an IPS panel. IPS reproduces colors a lot more accurately than TN panels do. TN panels can support a higher refresh rate and can have a really low input lag. TN panels are better for gaming while IPS panels are better for editing photos, videos, etc... I prefer TN panels since I game a lot even though it has a narrow viewing angle. You just can't compare two different technologies like that. You also need to turn up the brightness on the left monitor, or down on the right monitor...

@M390VI 8 лет назад
+bruno couto depends on the environment you work in, but matte is generally the go to option there. Do reflections bother you? Go with matte. Want the best looking panel? Go with glossy.
@brunocouto5550
@brunocouto5550 8 лет назад
+M390VI Actually, some days ago I ordered an Asus laptop, quite slim, a X555 model. But the screen annoyed me, it could reflect the light to the point that I had to try to adjust the screen in many angles until I had it right. Another thing about it, it is HD with a 15.6" screen. All characters seem blurred. And the colors looked washed out, I hated looking at it. I am considering an ips full hd dell notebook, it has a glossy screen, but the colors look vibrant an I guess it won't leave my sight tired
@M390VI
@M390VI 8 лет назад
+bruno couto IPS is the way to go, there is really very few reasons to go for a TN panel nowadays. Asus has some nice matte 1080p ips laptops. ux305 comes to mind, it is a nice one for portability and comparatively cheap, but it is a fanless 13.3" model. Have no personal experience with modern Dell laptops, but I hear their XPS line are top notch.
@brunocouto5550
@brunocouto5550 8 лет назад
+M390VI I live in Brazil, and here the options are quite limited. And the options available are not cheap. One TN laptop with 4 gb ram and no video board with an i3 processor may reach the price of R$ 2,000.00. divide that value for 3.55 to know how much you would pay in dollar. The dell I was talking about is more than R$, 4,000.00 (I think I put the commas and dots in the right order, lol). I have one Sony Vaio VPC F236FM /B American model. Full hd, a not so reflexive screen that has crisp characters. Seriously, before I knew that a matte display gives a blur to the screen in exchange for antireflexive properties, I thought my Vaio had it. Not sure if it's matte or glossy, it is so nice to work on it. But then, some keys stopped working. Impractical to work on it. Can't replace the keyboard for Brazilian keyboards don't match the model. And the membrane keyboard I've been working with is horrible. Well, I guess I should go with dell this time, let's hope it's gonna last for a long time. Sorry for the really long text, I guess I was ranting

bruno couto That's fairly expensive for an entry level i3 based laptop, and that's coming from a place where prices are generally at least 25% higher than what they are in the US. I think you can get an original replacement keyboard module for about US$20, don't know if it's an replacement on that model but keyboard replacements are usually not too difficult once you have the correct part. No worries about the length of the comment, it sucks that you have to pay so much compared to most other places.

So basically for in car screen, I think glossy screen is better bcoz there is not much stuff to reflect on the screen even under direct sunlight.
@LaptopReviewsDotCom

Yes, so long as the source of light is spread out and not a light directly behind or above you then the glossy screen should not be too reflective.

I've got a 2012 Macbook Pro and a recent upgrade in the from of a MSI GS65 Stealth Thin. I was, I am still pretty upset that the 2k MSI's display is dim! We're talking 7 years of technological advancements, the one thing I didn't think needed researching was the frigging display! It's a 2k laptop, 1080p and just compared to my mac that's a Duo Core i5, Integrated graphics, 4GB RAM (loooooool), 500GB HD (loooooooooo). Whereas my MSI GS65 is an i7-8750h 6 core, GTX 1070, 32GB Ram, 500Gb SSD, just an all around beast of an upgrade and going back to my (long lost love) windows roots. Yet I still have to watch movies on my 2012 mac because despite colour accuracy being better on GS65 the brightness is terrible. Dark scenes in a movie you pretty much can't tell what's going on. GoT which features many a darker scenes is a no brainer, have to watch on the mac. Actually considering buying a 3rd frigging laptop because can't find 1 that has it all? Uggggggh! (1st world problems much? 😋😋😋).

Even with a computer with a matte screen which has the best graphics cards and all that jazz, I still think Glossy will always look's more hd with hd displays. I remember going from my MacBook Pro (newest one without the touch bar) which has a super HD display this is easy to look at display compared to matte screen and I can say that it was so grainy even with some of the best graphics installed they look not as hd to me as the Glossy screen on my MacBook Pro. Even though my computer is only 13" It is very easy to look at because of how HD it is and for anyone with sensitive or crappy eyesight HD is better to look at for your eyes than blurry non hd displays. Also Blue light filters where you can change the colour are very good for your eyes, just test some out to see like the colour. Blue light filters are not good for digital or video editing for sure so you can turn them off if you are doing that, but they have really helped my sensitive eyes get less dry and my brain working properly for sleep during night time. Flux which I have on my computer makes the blue light filter more intense during night and there is less of a filter I set for daytime and it changes based on my location and hardly uses any battery on my computer to run which is nice. Anyways, I would rather have a small screen (not super small) with HD display than a big one with a display that is not very HD.

Great insights Harrison, and I especially like your comments about the blue light levels of a display as that is something rarely ever talked about but a major factor for me as well. Asus actually makes some monitors called "Eye care monitors" that have low flicker and very low blue light emission, which are very cool. But if you don't have hardware to help with bluelight then you can either use Flux or Windows 10 Night Light settings or Night Shift on a Mac to adjust blue light via software. I also wear blue light filtering glasses with 1.0x magnification which really help reduce my eye strain.

I love Matte screens. I have a matte screen protector on my iPhone and matte screen protector on my Mac. Don't know why I like em so much. I like the way it feels, looks everything. I guess i'm weird like that. lol

Glossy- higher brightness, better colours, darker blacks, sharper details, lesser scratches Matte- anto glare, less fingerprint, looks cool

If you work professionally and possibly working while you are travelling the only chose can be matte screen if you want to prevent headache. Glossy screen deflect and mirror anything. It's quite surprising that Apple, at least for their Pro series, do not offer matte screen anymore. It seems that everyone just wants to play with their MacBooks......
@LaptopReviewsDotCom
@LaptopReviewsDotCom 6 лет назад
Agreed, for laptop brands that don't even offer a matte screen you could get a 3M privacy filter that will help reduce glare amzn.to/2B1pHHY you just won't get wide viewing angles from the sides. You could also install your own screen after market, but who really wants to pay more on top of what you already pay when it comes to a MacBook!
