Glues and Adhesives Tested on Carbon Fiber for Strength

In this video, I test the strength of four different glues and adhesives. These tests aren't exactly scientific but I wanted more of a "real world" test because I'm making UAV/quadcopter frames and you never know how you're going to crash.
ABOUT THE TESTS
I made 4 wood frames from 1/16" thick birch plywood. This is the same wood that I'm using to sandwich in between layers of carbon fiber in my frames. Glued to the bottom of each frame is 0.008" thick woven carbon fiber sheet. This is very thin, lightweight stuff and all 4 pieces came from the same sheet.
The carbon fiber sheet was sanded and all surfaces were cleaned thoroughly. All adhesives were mixed and applied according to their instructions.
TEST 1 - BSI 30 Minute Slow Cure Epoxy
BSI stands for Bob Smith Industries. This epoxy is sold in many hobby stores and I seen videos where people rave about how good it is. For this application it was the worst. While it is slightly flexible after it cures, its still brittle. All I had to do was crack a corner and I easily peeled off the carbon fiber with hardly any effort. This stuff is not going to work well with a frame that's constantly flexing and its not going to hold up at all in a crash.
TEST 2 - Loctite CA Professional
I've heard good things about using CA (Cyanoacrylate or "Super Glue") on carbon fiber but you can't trust everything you read on the internet. I used CA quite a bit on my micro quads but I was gluing wood and plastic. Here, it was a tiny bit better than the BSI epoxy, but not much. It took a little more effort to separate the carbon fiber but once it started peeling away, it was the end. Just like hard epoxy, CA is too brittle and can't handle flexing.
TEST 3 - JB WELD Clear Weld
This 2 part epoxy is a COMPLETELY different product from the original JB Weld. This is a 5 minute epoxy that comes in a handy syringe style applicator. I've always heard quick drying epoxies are brittle but this stuff remains very flexible! When I tried to peel a corner, it resisted quite well, to the point where the wood started to split first. I really was struggling to peel the carbon fiber away. The carbon fiber actually ripped before I could peel the entire piece away. Remember, I was using very thin carbon fiber sheet for these tests. When I peeled the last piece off, you can see the wood itself had separated, not the bond between the carbon fiber and wood.
I would certainly recommend this product when you need to fix something in the field or you need to glue something that isn't critical. The problem with gluing more complex things like a frame, is that it hardens too quickly.
TEST 4 - 3M EC2216 Epoxy
This stuff is pretty amazing but it has its drawbacks. First, its expensive. Its around $20 for a 1.45 oz tube. Also, it dries very slowly- 24 hours for handling strength and 7 days for full strength. All that aside, you can see how well it held up in my test. When I tried to peel a corner, it took considerable effort to do any damage and then the carbon fiber sheet ripped. I was able to tear the entire edge away while the remaining carbon fiber was still firmly attached to the wood. I tried it on the other end and the same thing happened. I ended up having to break the frame to get enough leverage to separate the wood from the carbon fiber. You can see me twisting one piece of wood all the way around and the bond still holds. This is an amazing adhesive.
NOT SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO
I had already tested 2 other glues that aren't in this video because I didn't want to waste more carbon fiber. I tested regular JB Weld and its too brittle. It behaved in a similar way to the BSI epoxy. I also tested Gorilla Glue. While its a great glue for foam and wood, it does not stick to carbon fiber at all.
If you've been following my videos, you know I've built a replacement frame for my QAV400 that weighs less than half of the original frame but lacks torsional stiffness. I'm currently testing several designs for a strong, light frame that has good torsional properties as well. To follow along as I build new frames, see my QAV400 mods log:

I think the jb weld clear weld would work fine. Just be sure you glue both sides before sticking them together. There are other epoxies that don’t dry as quickly and working a lot with carbon fiber most epoxies will work well while longer drying will be inherently stronger

I'm going to fill a gap in a crack carbon bike frame... strength is very important... Its asmall gap... do you recommend a material for this? It is on a seat stay with carbon tubes and aluminum drop outs. The dropouts are "plugged into" the carbon tube. The 1 inch crack occured leading away from the drop out. This area needs to support weight so I wanted to first fill it wth some type of structural epoxy and they I will wrap a few layers of carbon over the crack. But I need that crack filled with something strong first... any recommendations for filler?

Great video! Thanks for making this. I've been trying to strengthen a Carbon Fiber Rod by applying it with a Quick 5min epoxy. I've used Loctite Plastic Epoxy and an Ace Hardware homebrand Plastic Epoxy. The Loctite Proved to be better. But I'm really interested in trying the 3M 2216 for strengthening the carbon fiber rod, I just wonder if it'll be a better hold or if it'll flex too much .
@rob215x
@rob215x 6 лет назад
You're welcome. Some amount of flexibility is important. If the glue is too hard, it becomes brittle and will crack. I still haven't found anything that works as well as the 3M 2216. Its kind of a pain to mix (if you don't buy the expensive applicator) and it takes longer to cure, but the results are worth the effort for me.
@JSTUART419
@JSTUART419 6 лет назад
I just dropped $70 on the 3M 2216 off of amazon, high hopes for it and thanks for the recommendation. Normally I just pour the resin and hardener in a cup and mix them, then throw the cup away. Hope that method will suffice for this particular epoxy. Kind of a bad method though, so I'm open for any suggestions you may have. Also, I plan to take 1Howdy1's advice and add some powder in during the application. I was thinking grounded Iron powder.
@rob215x
@rob215x 6 лет назад
First, I think you paid too much. Get the duo-pak cartridge from dragonplate.com or rshughes.com for $18. Then you can either buy the applicator gun (very expensive) or you can just push the proper amounts out of each tube. I use a kitchen gram scale and a paper plate. After zeroing the scale with the paper plate on it, I weigh each amount to get the proper ratio. I either do 5g and 7g, or 10g and 14g. You can tell which is which because one of the tubes is bigger than the other. Next, I would seriously try the 2216 without any filler first. 3M designed this stuff for commercial aircraft. Its a completely different level of material than anything you can find at the store.

@rob215x
@rob215x 7 месяцев назад
Based on how small it is and the amount of stress on it, I doubt any epoxy would be strong enough for your needs. You need a certain amount of surface area for a good bond. I also wouldn't want to risk losing my smart watch if the epoxy didn't hold. Can you order a new housing? Could someone 3-D print a new part for you? Late to the party, I know -- just wanted to say, you can actually get pretty good results with CA but you *have* to use a primer, just like with PP/PE plastics it is not optional! I think Loctite 7649 is the right one for CF if I recall, but you may want to call up Henckel and make sure. Should work with any CA you choose to use. $15-$20 a bottle, but it will last you a lifetime unless you're building a whole bike out of the stuff. (And you can use it for those difficult to bond plastics like PP and PE as well.)

@David-hm9ic 2 года назад
In most instances the glue did not remove much wood. The glue itself seemed to be letting go in the first three samples, indicating adhesion problems. The glue should have removed wood or had CF fibers bonded in it. I've been using epoxies for over 40 years and have NEVER seen any 5 minute product become brittle. Typically it will remain rubbery throughout its life and I've even seen it lose its bond in older models.

Either 3M EC-2216 (seen in this video) or 3M DP-420 (not seen in this video). These are aerospace grade epoxy adhesives. Surfaces need to be prepared and cleaned properly. If you are gluing one tube inside another tube or a fitting, this will be the best possible bond and its fairly lightweight. You don't need a lot but it needs to be mixed exactly as the data sheet shows. Definitely read the data sheets on these adhesives. These are not consumer grade adhesives you find at the hardware store. If you buy it on Amazon, it might be priced too high. Look for it on Jensentools.com

I'm as far as the third one (JB clear Weld?) and eff me it's frustrating to watch! I'm watching you struggle to pull it off and I'm wanting to shout at the screen: "COME ON, PULL IT OFF ALREADY!" haha. Kinda like watching someone doing something that you want to do instead of them like untying a knot in string. Grrrr. :-P Anyway, genuine question; it looks like the glue has held but the top has come off the carbon sheet. Like glueing a book to the table. If you glue the cover, the rest of the book is going to tear away and leave the cover. Doesn't mean the glue is bad. Make sense? Anyway thanks for the vid, altough I was looking for glueing carbon fibre to carbon fibre. I want to use two 'half pipes' of tube and glue it around a wire so it's as though I passed the wire through a tube...
@rob215x
@rob215x 7 лет назад
I was using very thin carbon sheets for these tests so I was able to tear them fairly easily. The JB Clear Weld works very well. Only the 3M 2216 works better but the 3M stuff is more expensive and takes a lot longer to cure. In practice I use both. If I want something as strong as it can be, I use the 3M, if I need something fairly strong and I don't want to wait a couple of days for full cure, I use the JB Clear Weld. Also, in later tests, I found the regular JB Weld does not work as well with carbon fiber.

What epoxy/glue are you using? If you're using 3M EC2216 epoxy, it is specially designed to be heat sensitive. This means you can use a heat gun and take things apart. Obviously you have to be careful when applying heat to materials like wood, but I have successfully disassembled wood parts that I bonded with EC2216. Also, it should be obvious NOT to use EC2216 in applications where the object is exposed to high heat. The data sheets supplied with the epoxy contain all of this information.
