You do know splitting green wood with green shoes on my cause time to not only stop but go in reverse. Nice show Chad. Another great tip for the books.
The check in the log naturally occurred from drying and shrinking. This was a place for the glut. Yes the log has internal twisting. From here the log would be flattened with an adz, hewing axe, and then to a scrub plane.
First time I've seen one of these, but I gravitate more towards power tools. (The lathe is actually the most-used power tool in my shop. :) ) Entertaining video. Questions: How do you get the initial groove in the log? After it's split initially, do you then plane/saw your boards out of it? Isn't the one shown awfully twisted?
