I was really amazed that an American bothered to listen to this. I mean, it's far too traditional and deeply Greek and "difficult staff", especially for foreigners. It talks about death. Thank you for the reaction.

To help you understand the style of music, all I have to tell you is that it is a Byzantine style, it passed to traditional and modern Greek music and is a continuation of ancient Greek music
@user-tk5ee2hk9u

Based on Byzantine that is based on Middle Eastern and Mediterranean ancient music(includes Ancient Greek music)

@@user-tk5ee2hk9u Byzantine style is older than Middle eastern music..so the middle eastern got their influence from the Byzantine style. Educate yourself.

@@katerinapatiniotis5598 I educate myself every day. Middle Eastern music means of the are of the Middle East. Middle Eastern music means also the music of the ancient people living there like the Sumerians, Hurrians, Babylonians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Anatolian people(like the Hittite), the Ancient Egyptians, and many other people, Middle East could include the Greeks too as the modern term is quite irrelevant as contact between the Greeks and the Near East was very expansive, seen also in the colonisation of Cyprus. I hope you read more about it before commenting in such an absolute way, καλή συνέχεια εύχομαι

Here is a rough translation of the lyrics, it's a bit of a grim song, however, it's a transitional song (unknown composer and lyricist) about the outlaw Greek guerillas who went to the mountains to live freely and fight the Ottomans. I'm pleased you liked it. They tricked me at dawn in spring, and told me the grim Reaper won't take me.Oh poor me I went to the mountains, high in the ridges. I see the grim Reaper coming, on horseback. There is nothing I can do, I know I will die.

Eleni Vitali. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m9DQqIbJSlA.html The lyrics of the song you reacted to: One early spring morning, The nightingales fooled me, As they said that Charon will not take me. (Refrain) Do not take me, Charon, spare me, for if you take me, you won't bring me back. Therefore, poor me, alas, I took to the mountains, up high on the mountain tops, And there I saw Charon coming, riding on his stallion. What shall I do now, woe me, when I think that I will die? The vocals depict the words of a Greek warrior during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottomans, expressing his determination to fight to the death and vowing not to yield, for if he falls in battle, he shall not return. I'm Greek but listened to this for the first time, this is marvelous. Here's the translation: "The dawn of spring, the nightingales mocked me They mocked me and told me, that death won't take me Don't take me, Death, don't take me, for you won't bring me back Here I am, black as night, in the mountains, high in the peaks I see Death approaching, riding on his horse What should I do, what should I do, when I think that I'll die"

Hey Nick, I want to introduce you to another great Greek singer through a short story. I saw an interview with Helen Vitali (the one with the gum in her mouth) and she was telling a story about going to a house by the sea owned by Stelios Kazantzides (the best ever singer that lived in Greece) with her father when she was a little girl. There she met Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. and not only once but many different times through the years. They used to visit Stelios ingognito just to hear him singing. Now I cant verify that but i don't think she had any reason to lie. Anyway here is a link for Stelios and i hope to see your reaction for him . Keep up the good work ! P.S. Not pitchy. The scale of the song is oriental because let's not forget that Greek culture thrived in the East, nowadays Turkey. However many modern Greek singers westernized those scales so they can play them on guitar piano etc. Typically, clarinets and violin players play them with micro tones and some particular great singers too. The scale is named Arast with a part in Nihabenti (Nikriz in oriental music)

A major difference between Western music and Middle Eastern music is that Western music tends to be based on a scale (sometimes called a key), while Oriental music is based on a maqam. In the words of the late San Francisco musician Mimi Spencer, a maqam is "something more than a scale, something less than a tune." It’s not out of tune. Check eastern music scales
