This video series will cover the complete rebuild of the front suspension, steering, and brakes on a GMT400 2WD truck. These trucks ran from 1988-1998.
This installment covers the installation of the front suspension, sort of. There are some parts issues. Also, I hope you’re able to learn from my mistakes. ;)

i did all polyurethane bushings on my 77 trans am and i had a horrible time getting those lower control arms in their spot like you did. used plenty of silicone grease, a jack, a hammer and thoughts about throwing the arms in the river. they arent in the river and the car handles like its on train tracks. well worth it

I'm glad manufacturers switched to MacPherson strut suspension (with half the number of parts) for most vehicles. Anyone nostalgic about the good old double-wishbones days needs to watch this video. We are all sympathetic to Eric's frustration. BTW - love this series! Keep up the good work!
@catskillwoodgas

MacPherson struts are a compromise. Dubble wishbones handle better. VW Audi uses a really complex set up, to get great handling.
@ericthecarguy

They switched to struts because they are cheaper. A double wishbone is a better suspension.

@@ericthecarguy- I'm not denying that DW is a better suspension choice, but for 99% of the driving we do it's overkill. Unless you're on a race circuit (SCCA, F1, Baja, etc) doubling the complexity of the suspension for 9/10's handling ability on a daily commuter is not worth it - especially in a truck. Otherwise we'd see DW on buses and semi's. That's the point I was trying to make.

Futzing with the one lower control arm... Last Summer when I did my C1500 upper and lower control arm replacement, the passenger side fought me. But, I used a come-along and a tree as an anchor to pull the control arm into alignment for installation. It's a hilarious picture which received many laughs, comments, and been-there sentiments. I guess it was the ultimate shade tree mechanic living-off-the-land solution!

To help get the control arms in you can get a piece of all thread, stick in through the hole, and put 2 washers and nuts on the all thread between the ears. and using the nuts force the ears apart. Then the control arms will slide in with ease.

The reality of this series of videos is appreciated. If this were Trucks TV, now knows as Truck Tech, everything would have just bolted in with out issue. TV shows like that p*ss me off because it gives the viewers a false sense of ability if they want to try things on their own. Eric isn’t above making mistakes, many of which I have pointed out, perhaps to harshly at times, but I do appreciate his efforts to present the material in a real world way. Eric, keep up the good work.

Thanks, Because it's on a lift the control arms are down making it leveled off, the springs aren't compressed enough. lower the truck then it'll work but the sanding was good customization for those extra reasons as well. I'm doing a 97 3500 with a jack and stands and i ordered those same exact springs, oem control arms and it's difficult as well, I already scratched the springs up so I don't want to use the old ones. Love all the videos.

Little trick for when you are having a tough time aligning the lower control arms into their position. Instead of using the mallet to hit the arms into position, use you mallet and lightly tap or hit the insides of the brackets where the arms are secured into place.

Because I’ve had recent struggles with my ‘71 Caprice lower control arm / coil spring install - My favorite part of your video is when the James Bond suspense music met wood block Jenga. Sadly, Hubby and my neighbor - in their valiant attempt to shield me from the dangers of the giant coil spring - succeeded in installing the coil spring with the compressor upside down. You can imagine how fun that was to deinstall when I saw what they did the next day. So my buddy and I removed the wonky set up and in the process the lower ball joint busted. Good times. Oh and PS - I noticed they also forgot to install the giant rubber ring that sits on top of the coil spring 😅.#MaritalProblems

Eric, sometimes what can help with getting those control arms in is to get a prybar in the eyelets (brackets) on the frame and spread them slightly or tap each side out with a hammer to ease installation.. once you crank the bolts down they will bend back into place.

LOL (for your frustration.. we've all been there!), next time take the inner fenders out, it'll give you gobs of space. For everyone watching... Don't buy those poly bushings. Just stick with the stock rubber ones. They are better. There is plenty of vids showing the horrors of that overly hard junk poly. Quality parts like Moog or Raybestos are better then stock, but not as horrid as any kind of poly. Tip: I used masking tape on all the rods, and labeled them with "Face out" and "up" for orientation. 4X4 is allot easier then the 2X4 version. But you will need a special C-clamp to get the torsion bars out. The tool is cheap, and you wont kill yourself trying to mod/use a regular C-clamp.

good morning eric(he who never also sleeps). now that you have installed the drop spindles and i know this comes at a time that it won't do much good.... ackerman angle/geometry. the gmt400 was truly a different design than most of gm's products in that the angles of the steering setup were CORRECT! the engineers got the dimensions right because they were not hindered by space and placement considerations and had cad at their disposal that had the bugs worked out of it. the centreline of the spindles have changed and as a result the ackerman geometry will have changed. it's not a big deal to most folks because they won't notice the change in the behaviour of the vehicle....they won't push it in turns or under braking or when using trail braking maneuvers. you probably will though because of the work you have done on the fairmont. things you may notice.... twitchiness in turns...especially when using trail braking. the rear end will feel a bit lighter and will give the impression of wanting to kick out a little easier. it may want to plow a bit more in transitional maneuvers(slightly slower to respond/tyres will not be at an even angle to each other). the bonus of lowering it though will be an overall feeling of being more stable if slightly stiffer dampers are used in conjunction with the mods. IF you drive on twisty roads a lot you will notice accelerated tyre wear on the tread edges. if mostly on straight roads though edge wear won't be an issue. it looks like rodding has found another victim and it's a good thing.looks like you are having a bit of fun doing this :-) hope all is well on your side of the planet and enjoy the day! =dok=

The front end looks almost identical to my 96 Lincoln Town Car. And I had the exact same difficulty with the lower control arms. I went with poly as well to stiffen up the front end.

Also very similar to my 01 crown vic suspension. This video brought back painful traumatic memories of when I replaced it. Those coil springs are not fun to work with.
